India is known for its great culture when it comes to the ways of dressing. Every country has different dresses that represent the various cultures and its people. The clothes vary according to religions, communities and regions.  Some ethnic outfits are simple for festivities while others are just common wear.

It is clear that the fashion culture and the way people dress in Assam are colourful and vibrant. The difference tribes living in Assam all have different ethnic clothing. The most common traditional outfits among the tribes of Assam are the women’s Mekhela and men’s dhoti. The Mekhela chador is an indigenous Assamese dress worn by women of all ages, except for very young children.

Draping the Mekhela is easy when you are used to it.  The bottom piece of this ensemble is draped from the waist going downwards.  You can fold it in one or two pleats to fit your waist perfectly. The pleats of the Mekhela are folded in the right direction as opposed to the left like that of the Nivi style and the saree. It is unique and similar to that of the south East Asian attire. The chador is long and has one of its ends tucked into the upper part of the Mekhela and the other end is draped over one arm and around the body. The people of Assam wear their traditional attire in silk, muga and paat.

Traditional Outfits


The saree is the most common traditional attire among the women of Bengal. Saree some in different materials, the most common being silk, cotton and chiffon. There are many ways to drape a saree, and different states have their ways of style this traditional but fashionable outfit. Kolkata has the influenced the Indian fashion world in styling their saree. This state is known for the production of the best cotton and silk saree.  The women like draping them with a red bindi.

There are many types of Bengali saree, all draped in the famous Bengali style. The main point you should know when draping this saree is that it is similar to Nivi style.  Tuck in your saree in your waist, while making broad plats and end it at the right leg. Traditional Outfits


Churidar salwar kameez are popular among the women of Punjabi. The designs are available in different materials and styles.  The Punjabi salwar is perfect for women of all body types. The silhouette of the Churidar is defined by your body type. It is clingy and creates a perfect shape for your legs.  For the perfect look, Punjabi women wear a tunic with a slim waist and a-line bottom. They love this look for traditional and cultural events. Patiala pants are also famous in Punjabi. The structure of the pants complements women of all ages. Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir are homes to a variety of religions and communities, making their fashion very variable. The most common traditional attire in these regions is the Pherans. The Muslim and Hindu women of these areas have different versions of the pherans.

For both male and females, the most common outfit won by the people of Kerala is the Mundu. Although it is mostly worn by the men, it is not uncommon among the women. There are many Mundu designs that you can wear in formal, casual and cultural events.

For weddings and cultural events, people in Kerala embellish the Mundu to make it look more celebratory and change the mood of the occasion.

There are many variations of ethnic clothes in Delhi, the most common being the salwar kameez.  Some few common salwars in Delhi include the dhoti, Churidar and Patiala pants.
