One of the most searched questions you will find in my search history is “how to clean a clear phone case.” I had no clue why my case turns yellow in just a week or two. When I discussed this very topic, I got to know that this is a question many ask.

My phone cases are my favorite accessories to have, and when they get discolored or turn yellow, it is not at all pleasant to look at. It doesn’t seem sensible to buy the same thing over and over again. So, after many YouTube videos and DIY research on how to clean a clear phone case, I have filtered out a few solutions and found answers to questions many of us have.

Why Does a Clear Case Turn Yellow?

Most of the clear cases are made with Silicone or Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). It is made with them so that the case can have elasticity, transparency, and shock absorbency. These materials have all these key ingredients and are also inexpensive, which hits all the right boxes for buyers and sellers.

But with these materials, the polymers in them turn yellow or get discolored as they age, and this process gets even faster with exposure to heat, UV lights, and chemicals. This is the same thing that happens with our phone cases. They radiate heat and are exposed to plenty of sunlight, making them turn yellow or have yellow spots a lot faster than usual.

Methods on How to Clean a Clear Phone Case

1.      Soap and Water

Materials needed: Warm water, soap or dish soap, soft-bristled toothbrush, and a clean towel.

Step 1: In a small bowl, mix warm water and soap/dish soap

Pour some warm water into a bowl and add a few drops of the soap. Any type or brand of soap will work for this as long as it is mild. Mix them well till the water has some bubbles or becomes soapy.

Step 2: Scrub the clear case with a toothbrush dipped in soap water

Make sure you don’t do this process while the clear case is still on your phone. Separate the two and then progress.

Dip the clean toothbrush in soap water, brush the entire case with it; brush the case in circular motions. Make sure to clean the side parts of the phone as well.

Step 3: Rinse the clear case.

After brushing the case, wash the case under running water in a sink. You will see an instant difference in the case, and if there are still some spots left, you can try brushing them again as needed.

Step 4: Dry the clear case with a towel

After getting rid of the excess water, wipe the clear case with a towel thoroughly. Try to remove all the moisture from the case.

Keep the case separate in a room temperature dry place for an hour to air dry to avoid moisture ending up in your phone.

2.     Isopropyl Alcohol/Rubbing Alcohol

Material needed: Isoprophy/Rubbing alcohol and a clean towel

Step 1: Damp the towel with Isopropyl/Rubbing alcohol

Remove your clear case from your phone, and then pour some Isoprophy/Rubbing alcohol on the towel.

Step 2: Scrub the clear case.

Scrub the damp towel on the clear case, especially on the parts where there are stains or is yellow. Make sure you don’t forget the hard-to-reach parts, like corners or the charging port area.

Step 3: Dry the clear case with a towel

Use a second towel to clean the clear case from the Isopropyl/Rubbing alcohol. Later, keep the clear case in a room temperature dry place to air dry for an hour to protect the phone from moisture damage.

3.      Baking Soda

Material needed: Baking soda, water, towel, and a soft-bristled toothbrush

Step 1: Sprinkle baking soda

Take your clear case off your phone and keep them separate. Sprinkle baking soda on the stains or the yellow parts of the clear case.

Step 2: Scrub the clear case with a toothbrush.

Take the toothbrush and dip it into water. Scrub the baking soda with the wet toothbrush in circular motions. If the toothbrush gets dry, dampen it again with more water.

Step 3: Rinse the clear case.

To clean the case, move it under running water in a sink. Wash the entire case with either your hands or a toothbrush and keep washing until you are sure that you got rid of all the baking soda.

Step 4: Dry the clear case with a towel

After shaking off the excess moisture, dry the clear case with a clean towel. To avoid the possibility of getting moisture in your phone, air dry your clear case in a dry place for an hour.

Step 5: Use method 1 if the case still looks dirty

If the baking soda helps eliminate all the tough stains, there might be some little ones left behind. For that, use the first method of soap and water described above to clear the small stains on your clear case.
