Who doesn’t love dragons? They might be mythical beings, but they sure are amazing! Dragons are those big majestic creatures with beauty and power. Now, as all this is not possible in real life, we people have to quench our wishes by watching them on screen. Thus, what best way to do that than watching some of the best movies or series starring dragons in them? So let’s talk about How to train your dragon characters!
Having dragons, such fierce creatures as pets is a concept that is fun and interesting. How to train your dragons is a movie that revolves around the concept of making peace with dragons. Even though dragons may look pretty intimidating, just imagine having them on our side. This film was premiered on 16th April 2010 with a huge blast.
The setting of the movie is a small Viking town called Berk. Where our main character Hiccup Horrendous Haddock iii is a teen who wishes to be a dragon slayer just like all the other Vikings in this town. But by the turn of events he instead befriends a dragon. This movie by Dreamworks animation shows the journey of Hiccup and his dragon and how they save the whole village from the upcoming challenges.
The How to train your dragon series consists of 3 feature films. They all are a continuation of each other so you should watch them in order. But don’t worry the movies individually don’t end at cliffhangers, so you won’t have to hold your breath. The franchise of this dragon movie also has five short films that you can watch.

1. Hiccup – The Main Protagonist
Hiccup is an undersized teen Viking who to date hasn’t killed a dragon. He is one of the main characters in this film. From the start itself, he is shown to be afraid of fighting the dragons. This worries Hiccup’s father as he thinks that Hiccup lacks the ability to be a true Viking. Due to some events that took place in the past, the town believes Dragons to be violent, wild, and dangerous to humanity.
By the turn of events, Hiccup ends up meeting a powerful dragon known as Night Fury and befriends it. This event acts as the turning point of the movie as it changes the outlook that Hiccup, and thus the whole town has about the species whole of Dragons in general. He realizes that Dragons are not all wild they in fact are quite intelligent. He believes that they can be trained and can help them fight enemies and protect their families. Thus the movie shows the journey they both embark on together of forming an unbreakable bond.
2. Toothless
Toothless is Hiccup’s dragon in this movie. He is also one of the main characters in the film. Toothless is a Night Fury, which is one of the rare and strongest species in Dragons. Due to its speed acquired because of its sleek figure and the power to camouflage at night because of its black color, the species of Night Fury is never seen by the Vikings.
As Night Fury has the power to retract its teeth, in the start he seems to be toothless, and thus why Hiccup graces him with the said name. The reason why Hiccup encounters toothless is because of its injury. Due to a series of incidences, from the start of the movie itself, we see that Night Fury has lost its left tail wing.
Hiccup and Toothless embark on a journey where they go against all the odds and form an unbreakable bond. This ends up changing the whole town’s stand on dragons and they all start trusting their dragon counterparts. They begin to consider the species of the dragon as their friend and pet.
3. Astrid- The youngest How To Train Your Dragon Character
The Youngest character in How to train your dragon is Astrid Hofferson-Haddock. She is one of the warriors in the Hofferson clan of the Hooligan tribe. Astrid is one of Hiccup’s friends who later on becomes his girlfriend. She is 15 years old in the first film.
Astrid has a tough and hard-to-please personality, but once befriended she is sweet and loyal to heart. Even though in the start she, like others, hated and mistrusted the dragons, later she starts supporting Hiccup. Toothless plays an important role in convincing her. She is strong and is a fulfilling character. She, later on, ends up becoming Hiccup’s lifelong confidante. In the movie, she rides a dragon Deadly Nadder and names it Stormfly.
4. Stoick
Stoick the vast, is the Chieftain of the village Berk. He is the leader among the people and villagers trust him to protect them. He is also the father of Hiccup. Stoick considers his son to be lacking in Viking qualities. He thus has a bit of a strained relationship with his son.
Stoick believes that humans should fight against dragons as they could destroy their worlds. He likes to shoot sticks and stones at dragons rather than befriend them. When Hiccup reveals that he has befriended a dragon, Stoick becomes furious. He believes that all the dragon training is useless and that they can never be part of their family. But after consecutive events proving him wrong he becomes convinced into believing in them.
5. Twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut
The twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut are two funny characters who are always bickering with each other. They both are the in same group of friends with Hiccup. Ruffnut is female while Tuffnut is a male character. Both brother and sister same the same dragon a Hideous Zippleback named Barf and Belch.
Ruffnut is shown to be a bit tomboyish with a smug and sarcastic attitude. But she also is strong with compassionate nature. Tuffnut too similar to his sister is loyal and strong. Both of them argue continuously but also can’t stay away from each other for too long.
6. Barf and Belch
Barf and Belch are Hideous Zippleback dragons ridden by the Thorston twins. They both are green in color with yellow eyes. Barf and Belch share the same body with two different heads. Their head might resemble each other but there are some differences. Like, compared to the horn on Blech’s nose, the horn on Barf’s nose is a bit curved. Both Barf and belch love hoarding eggs.
They too similar to their allies constantly bicker with each other. But when the time comes for fighting both together are a force to be considered. The relationship between the four of them is humorous and constantly entertaining to the audience.

7. Red Death
Red Death is Stoker Dragon. He can be considered as the main antagonist in the first film of How to train your Dragon Franchise. As Red Death can control its surrounding other dragons with its Homing signal and can command them to do its bidding. The Red Death used this power to order other dragons to bring food from the nearby villages by raiding them.
Red Death also has the ability to breathe fire. Its methane-based flame jets are gigantic and destructible. It also has great strength and though due to its size, it lacks stealth, it still is powerful. It lives deep inside the corona of a Volcano. Toothless led the Vikings to its lair. Thus began the fight between the Red Death and the Vikings.
8. Bewilderbeast- The strongest dragon in How To Train Your Dragon?
Bewilderbeast is the most powerful one of the Dragons in the How to train your dragon characters. It is also the biggest of all, even bigger than Red Death. Bewilderbeast is a Tidal class dragon that comes in the Second movie of the How to Train your Dragon series. Just like the Red Death, Bewilderbeast too has the power to control the dragons around it. But, this dragon is undoubtedly much better and stronger than Red Death.
This breed of Dragon has the ability to command other dragons. although it doesn’t have the power to spit fire, it can freeze water. Thus it uses this ability to attack other dragons using the frozen ice as a weapon to harm. Its Ice blast is thus very destructive.
Conclusion
The first film of the How to train your dragon series was released in 2010 in the theaters. The character development in the whole movie is amazing. This film is directed by the directors’ Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, who have done a marvelous job. The movie is produced by Bonnie Arnold. The IMDb rating of How to train your dragon (2010) is 8.1/10. The story that this movie showcased was loved by audiences all around the world.
The second part of How to train your dragon was released on 13 June 2014 and got a rating of 7.8 on IMDb. While the third part which is How to Train Your Dragon – The Hidden World, was released in 2019 and got a 7.4 rating on IMDb. The writers of this film amazed thousands of fans with its storyline. Even the actors who gave their voices to this movie performed amazingly. This movie has won the hearts of many people across the whole world.
