Icy Tales is in conversation with Jaishree Nenwani, where she walks us through her life and journey as an author.
Q. You recently published your book “Tiny Habits Massive Results” tell us more about it and what motivated you to write it.
Jaishree Nenwani: I never had the plan to write a book, but I have always been passionate about journaling; I love penning down my thoughts, emotions, and everyday activities and sometimes progress as well. So one of my friends suggested I write a book and publish it. So I took some time and thoughts, then started writing; initially, I started writing about my own story, and there were certain chapters I wasn’t quite interested in discussing in the book, so then after quite some reconsideration, I decided to write about what I have learned during my journey, through my struggles and everything.
This book is mainly about everyday habits that we can very easily build up, which would help us shape our lives. Coming to motivation, it was a vertical leap of faith after being persuaded by my friend. So I jotted down some habits that have helped me to overcome the various situations I have faced and have aided me to reach where I am right now, so this is how ‘Tiny Habits Massive Results’ came into existence.
Q. Writing a book is undoubtedly an accomplishment; what were the obstacles you faced during the process, and some tips for someone who wants to start writing a book?
Jaishree Nenwani: Writing as a writer and blogger wasn’t difficult for me, but publishing the book was the most stressful part. If one is writing a book and sharing their thoughts, I would suggest taking help from professional editors, who can channel the structure and flow of the book. Before you finalize any publishing company, talk to several people, and pinpoint the ones who are professionals. Don’t just read reviews on the internet and finalize your publishing house; talk to people who have published books with them. So publishing was the overwhelming part of the process.
I believe if someone is a writer penning down their thoughts won’t be daunting, but this might be scary for someone who is not. Still, I would write it down as it is and then use a professional service to build it up, but don’t reach out to ghostwriters for such help.
Q. What brought you into this field?
Jaishree Nenwani: I was into a corporate job but had to quit due to certain health complications. So I started indulging myself in writing, initial years, I worked as a freelancer, and eventually, I refined my writing, and then I started my blog GetSetHappy in 2017. By 2022 I got my first book published. It was difficult, but journaling has always been my passion; then and there, it came to my rescue.
Q. What tips do you have for a beginner at journaling?
Jaishree Nenwani: Journaling is divine; it is not just about writing about your daily activities or random thoughts; it is a complete journey of clearing the mind. So when it comes to journaling, I would say start with dumping your thoughts; initially, it will help you in clearing your mind, which shall be great for stress release and finding solutions, and it can be your best friend who shall be there to listen to you without judging you.
As a beginner at journaling, start by dumping your thoughts, write for a few days, and after that, you will realize that you are clearing your mind and everything will be clear eventually. It is a step-by-step process. Even in my book, I have mentioned detailed information on how journaling can be an inside job for you helping you in many ways. The whole idea of journaling is to clear your mind, so even if you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, do it, and it shall help!
Q. How does our lifestyle influence our happiness quotient?
Jaishree Nenwani: Lifestyle is something that we choose to do! When we make good choices for our body and mind, relationships, and professions, we make ourselves happy. We usually do everything to make ourselves happy. So whatever choices we make, the basic aim is to achieve happiness.
Q. Do you think self-care is a gender-specific indulgence? If so, how can one overcome stereotypes?
Jaishree Nenwani: No! Self-care is independent of skin, body, or mind; it is a holistic routine that rejuvenates a person in and out. Self-care is not gender-specific; everyone needs self-care, me-time, and relaxation for their body and mind. It is just that people get so indulged in everyday errands that they forget to take time out for themselves, but it is quintessential to take time out for oneself and nurture the body and mind.
Q. How important is it for anyone to stop seeking external validation; is there any easy way to do so?
Jaishree Nenwani: People never stop judging; everyone will have their own opinion as everyone thinks. We have a beautiful proverb in Hindi, ‘Sabse Purana rog, kya kahenge log.’ Don’t let their opinions overpower and dominate your thoughts; make your own decisions. Differently, it is okay to take suggestions from elders and the people around us. If needed, write it down, it will help you clear the clutter, and you can analyze the right and wrong to reach the appropriate conclusion. Stop looking for external validations; that is the most stressful thing we do to ourselves.
Q. What is the best way to deal with negative people and vibes?
Jaishree Nenwani: Stay away from them as much as you can. But we can’t avoid them a hundred percent; it is usually not possible because we have such people in different places in our vicinity. I again would say use your journal; if you are overwhelmed by the negativity, sit down for some time and take down all your thoughts on paper, all the negativity you have been holding on to. In addition to this, don’t forget to practice gratitude journaling. When you show gratitude for the positives in your life, your thoughts automatically shift your mindset from the negatives to the positives.
Q. What is your advice for beginners of any endeavor today?
Jaishree Nenwani: Be Yourself! Listen to your heart, and don’t indulge in the mad race of trends; if you are not listening to your heart and following what you want, you will never be able to succeed. You might be able to earn a lot of money, but you will not be happy, and in the longer run, after a couple of years, you will be frustrated with your work and indulgences.
It’s sometimes difficult to have a job that one is passionate about, a dynamic profession. In that case, at least do something catering to your passion for keeping you going and being yourself. Following your heart will take your place and aid in leading a stress-free and happy striving in your life.
Jaishree Nenwani believes that people and circumstances can be overwhelming for each of us; in that case, journaling and letting those emotions out could be the best route to reach a self-conscious state. She urges us to remember that people can be difficult, and situations can be difficult, but a clear mind shall be pivotal in wading through these difficulties enabling us to reach our goals.
