Shalini Priya is a mom blogger and influencer. She is the mother of two cutest children. She also has written a book called ‘Motherhood and beyond.’ Shalini Priya did her early studies in mass communication in Delhi and then moved to Mumbai. She started her journey in the television industry as an assistant director and soon became the creative head.
In her journey of 10 years, Shalini Priya worked in many popular television brands, ‘Na Aana is des Laado’ show, Balaji Telefilms, Directors Kut productions, and a lot more. Though Shalini was successful and independent, she felt alone sometimes and realized the need to have a family, so consequently, Shalini got married.
When Shalini Priya got pregnant with her first child and was confined to her house, she found her creativity dying. So she reconnected with her friends in the writing industry and started Ghostwriting. Not being satisfied with this form, Shalini Priya started writing on websites. After seeing her viral content, she finally started her own Instagram page. Cut short to now 2022, the blogger is an established mother influencer who guides and shares information with new mothers.
Icy Tales is conversing with Shalini Priya on her journey from a creative head to blogging.
Q) Tell us about your journey as a mom blogger.
Shalini Priya- My blogging journey began in the early 2019s when I started writing on Mom oriented websites; seeing my content getting viral, I started my own Instagram page and began writing for that. I gave my page characters to make my content interesting and did much more. Then gradually, reels came into the picture; I was not much into acting, so reels were not my thing. But when I got pregnant for the second time, I started making reels, and my page grew a lot.
The growth and the numbers were magical. When my second child was born, I made reels on all knowledge I acquired through the first pregnancy experience. After verifying it through my pediatrician friends, I share every piece of information. Many new moms, even from abroad, connected with me, and my audience grew. Consequently, I started getting brand collaborations. After that, I started getting good products and partnerships and earning well enough.
Q) What are the challenges that you faced post-pregnancy?
Shalini Priya- The main challenge I faced was that I had nobody to guide me or help me through my motherhood. My mother was always a working woman, that’s why my grandmother raised me, so my mother also was not able to guide me. Even the doctors also, you can’t call them at any time you want. It’s not that you need help at 3 am and you randomly call your doctor.
So, I used to be very confused about what to do. Fast forward to now, I am doing exactly what I needed at that time. I make posts on the things that I need help with. Every day I want to make better content and help people like me.
Q) How do you cope with the stress of being a mom?
Shalini Priya- Coping up isn’t a choice; you must cope. Earlier during my pregnancy, I was very self-centered; I didn’t want anybody’s help and wanted to do everything independently. But the second time, I was very vocal about my mental health, stress levels, and needs. I told my family that I want you people to be here with me and help me through kids. So, I divided my jobs. For instance, If I woke up the entire night with the little one, then in the early morning, my husband would take care of him.
This division of work helped me a lot. Besides, getting yourself checked if you have any postpartum depression is also crucial. I got diagnosed with the same, so I screened myself and began my medications to heal. If I conclude, getting help, division of work, and medical assistance helped me cope with everything.
Q) What is your family’s role in your blogging?
Shalini Priya- Initially, my family’s role was nothing, but now my husband knows this is a full-time job. Now also, only my husband understands; my in-laws and parents don’t exactly know what this job is. Earlier, they were confused about what kind of job this was; I was always on my phone.
They only know that I work and earn money, so they help me with the household and kids. My husband understands everything I do and is always there to support me. He is there in some of my videos too. He feels very proud when someone mentions my work to him.
Q) Has motherhood changed your perspective on the world In any way?
Shalini Priya- If I talk about the world, I am a girl’s mother and a boy’s mother. Being a boy’s mother is more difficult and stressful in both situations. So, every accident that I witness, I absorb it in two forms; what would have been the situation if there were my girl or my boy?
If someone’s son does something wrong to a girl, then only it will happen to a girl. So, I need to control and educate my son on this more than my daughter. It is more concerning that I need to raise a good and disciplined son if I want a good world for my daughter.
Q) What is the hardest part of being a mom?
Shalini Priya- The hardest part is that the term motherhood has been extensively glorified. Mother is not God. Yes, she needs to be respected. But she is not God in the real sense. She is a human; who gets tired and makes mistakes. Especially the mother who has just given birth; she is a human and a weaker human who needs a lot of help to get back to normal life. Motherhood needs help. Yes, you may worship motherhood, but worshipping is useless if you can’t support and stand for a mother.
Our society has created a false narrative that you are a mother and you can do anything and everything, but it is not so. For instance, If a mother cannot breastfeed properly, the elderly society taunts her, that she can’t even breastfeed her child. My fellow mothers have even started committing suicide and getting depressed because of this narrative. A mother is shamed the moment she conceives. This is the hardest part of motherhood, and I would like to request everyone please help and support every mother you see.
Q) There are many mom bloggers in the town. How would you differentiate yourself from them?
Shalini Priya- Everybody is doing good; everyone has unique styles and preferences. I would say I was always a writer, so I will mostly communicate information to my audience. My genre is to provide information; I only do comedy to survive the current trend and algorithm. Something that differentiates me from other bloggers is my informative and meaningful content. I am not trying to disgrace any genre or content. Instead, I am just telling you about mine.
Q) Any tips that you would like to share from your experiences?
Shalini Priya- I always tell my audience that you will raise happy kids when you are so glad. It would help if you did not compromise on your happiness. Your kids will learn everything you do, so do not sacrifice your happiness; live for yourself. And most importantly, do not judge yourself as a mother based on society’s made-up norms.
