The Do’s and Don’ts After a Sports Injury  2
SHARE

Being involved in a sports-related injury is nothing that should be neglected. As common as they are, each sports injury is unique to each individual and should therefore be treated with unique care. In 2016 alone, approximately 17,000 Canadians suffered serious sports-related industries that required hospitalisation. Therefore, sports injuries should be treated with as much care as any other injury. This is because if they are not treated correctly, they can lead to a lifetime of chronic pain. Continue reading for a list of the main do’s and don’ts after a sports-related injury.

Don’t Keep Moving

As many Canadians are taught from a young age, if we hurt ourselves or go over on our ankle for example we should simply get back up and soldier on. With sports injuries, however, experts recommend that you give yourself enough resting time to allow the injury to heal on its own or with the correct medication. Take the time to maintain good contact with your doctor and other professionals providing treatment and follow their plan and guidance on moving again.

Do Visit a Healthcare Professional

One thing you should make every attempt at is visiting a range of healthcare professionals for the necessary treatment and advice. Some of the most popular health services that are commonly recommended to people who have suffered a sports injury are both chiropractic care and physiotherapy. Chiropractors are registered healthcare professionals who are fully trained to help manage and treat the effects of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. Experts recommend that taking the time to visit a range of professionals is a sure way to get you on the road to recovery.

Don’t Rush Your Recovery

After your injury, you mustn’t try and rush your recovery as this can make the injury take longer to heal. Getting back into your chosen sport again too quickly can prolong the lasting effects of the injury and leave you in pain for a longer period. In extreme cases, unhealed bones and ligaments can lead to a lifetime of chronic pain. So, be sure not to simply rely on painkillers and get back out running when you think you are ready to.

Do Take Time for Yourself

One of the best ways you can take care of yourself throughout injury recovery is by taking extra time for yourself. This can be in the morning, in the evening, or whenever you truly need it. You should not feel guilty about making allowances for yourself when you’ve been injured and should keep this in mind while you are healing. When taking time for yourself, it is important that you consider the effects of the injury and recovery process on your mental health. Do all you can to make things easier for you and stay mindful about your actions. Don’t feel guilty about sitting down for too long and know that you are worthy of some downtime.

Follow this list of the main do’s and don’ts after a sports injury to speed up your recovery process.
