I list here some of the most critically acclaimed movies of Anurag Kashyap, the man of controversies. I have kept in mind the people who haven’t watched them as yet. Yes, no spoilers.  Gangs Of Wasseypur Series (2012)

Undoubtedly among the best Anurag Kashyap movies, Gangs of Wasseypur also has the most double meaning and catchy song of the decade “hunter”. Leaving it aside, this movie was based on the gangsters of Dhanbad who have had a gang war and they end up killing everyone or getting arrested. If you’ve not watched the movie yet then I’m sorry you’re not my type. Yes, I am judging you. So first go and watch the movie because if you’ll not you won’t get any references to the fun facts and also you’ll miss some unbelievable ones.

  • The 2 movies have been made in the real scenario but not the real locations. I say this because the vehicles used in the movie had the number plate of UP65 that is Varanasi and the place shown was Wasseypur. 
  • There was no positive character in the movie and the name of one of the leaders of the gang, SARDAR KHAN was coined by the actor Manoj Bajpayee who was playing the role himself.      
  • The director of a successful dacoit and crime thriller Paan Singh Tomar, Tigmanshu Dhulia had a debut in this movie as Ramadhir Singh.{BETA TUMSE NAA HOPAAYEGA}
  • Some parts of the movie have been shot on the hidden cameras on an actual location on the streets of Varanasi.
  • While taking a shot for the movie in Varanasi, Sohil Shah, assistant director, died in an accident. He fell with a jeep off the bridge and hit his ear against a metal rod and suffered an instant hemorrhage.  
  • Sardar Khan’s sons Perpendicular and Tangent are seen watching Munnabhai MBBS (2003). PERPENDICULAR’S elder brother Nawazuddin played a ‘blink and you miss him’ role in the same film.
  • Sultan Qureshi was a character of fearsome butcher 12 years of age, who could slaughter and skin 1 buffalo in a single day which was developed seeing a boy do it in real life. This was played by Pankaj Tripathi. 
  • Mohsina’s character that was played by Huma Qureshi was never a part of the film earlier; it came out of Anurag Kashyap‘s improvisation.
  • The real inspiration of the movie came from ‘SUBRAHMANIAPURAM’, a Tamil movie released in 2008.

Dev D (2009)

We all have admired the character of Devdas in every movie we have seen. Most of us don’t have an idea of 16 movies based on the novel “DEVDAS”. Anurag Kashyap known for making some different kinds of movies made a DEVDAS movie set in contemporary times. The movie revolves around Devinder Dhillon ‘DEV’, Leni ‘CHANDA’, and Parminder ‘Paro’. This movie shows how familial tradition becomes a prison when it starts making marriage a matter of honor and power.

  • This movie brought to us the most splendid actresses. Mahie Gill and Kalki Koechlin debuted with this movie.
  • The movie was shot in Rohtang pass, Himachal Pradesh. 
  • Despite having a low budget, the movie was a hit and critically acclaimed, making it among the Today, it stands among the best Anurag Kashyap movies. 
  • Opium head by Solace was inspired by DEV D’s soundtrack.
  • Music composer and singer “Amit Trivedi” also debuted with this movie but as the release of the movie got delayed, ‘AAMIR’ was released first and his first composition was out later.
  • Anurag Kashyap married Kalki after he met her at the shooting of DEV D.

Black Friday (2004)

The Black Friday is a movie based on HUSSAIN ZAIDI’s book “Black Friday: The true story of Bombay bomb blasts”. It is said to have facts of the Mumbai bomb blasts in 1993. It talks about the people involved in the blasts and police investigations regarding it. It’s thought to be among the best Anurag Kashyap movies and a classic in itself. Here is what you need to know. 

  • Kay Kay Menon played Rakesh Maria who solved the Bombay Blast Case. All the actors in the movie had real names of the character they were playing.
  • Naseeruddin Shah was offered the character of Tiger Memon but he denied as he didn’t feel okay with the role-playing of a Muslim in Gujarat (where the shooting was on).
  • One of the explosions was inside the plaza cinema in Dadar where the film ‘TIRANGA’ was running houseful as shown in the movie. 
  • Imtiaz Ali debuted as an actor in this movie. He played Yaqub Memon.
  • The attack on 12th March 1993 killed 317 people in 13 bomb blasts injuring 1400 people.
  • The movie was banned in India and was released 2 years later than its actual release date. Today, it’s among the Today, it stands among the best Anurag Kashyap movies. 

Gulaal (2009)

It is an Indian political drama based in Rajasthan that consisted of university politics and malpractices of the goons disguised as students. The 2 leads of the movie were Raj Singh Chaudhary and Kay Kay Menon. Other prominent characters were Mahie Gill, Deepak Dobriyal, Abhimanyu Singh, Ayesha Mohan, and Piyush Mishra.  

  • Initially, it was produced by Jhamu Sugandh but after 20 days of shoot, the project got halted due to personal reasons. It was later taken up by ZEE MOTION PICTURES and Gulaal finally got completed after a halt of two years.
  • Censor censored two dialogues from the movie- one referring to Gandhi and Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the other being a discussion about the origin of India and national anthem.
  • The budget was so light that the shoot was planned in such a way that it was scheduled in festivals so that the producers don’t need to put money in lighting and extras.
  • The video of Mahie Gill on television in the salon scene is from her Punjabi movie “Chak De Phatte”.
  • The bar where the protagonist had got his liquor bottles is with the label of some socio-political ideology.
  • Drinks were named as ‘Democracy’ and ‘Republic’ are shown to suit the backdrop of the movie.

Ugly (2013)

Ugly revolves around the struggling actor Rahul whose daughter kali gets kidnapped and the events that follow. The name ‘ugly’ is a symbolism of the true human face that turns ugly with the greed of power and ego. 

  • Anurag Kashyap had requested the parents of the child actor Anshika to not let her watch the movie as it was too dark for her to watch.
  • The concept of Kali meeting her biological father is Anurag Kashyap’s personal experience of being an alienated father.
  • Alia Bhatt had a special screen appearance in the movie playing the role of young Shalini bose(Kali’s mother), she was given thanks in the credits for her appearance
  • This movie was also halted for 2 years and it released in 2014 despite its shooting being completed in 2012.
  • This movie premiered at the Director’s Fortnight Section in Cannes 2013.

Mukkabaaz (2017)

Another of the best Anurag Kashyap movies, it released worldwide with the name of “The Brawler”. Mukkabaaz is a story revolving around a struggling boxer who falls in love with the mute niece of the boxing federation and in the end, becomes a successful boxer. The Indian sports drama that received much appreciation not only for the script but for the actors who acted so well and put in their passionate efforts.

  • The lead VINEET SINGH was asked to take the training of boxing without revealing the fact that he was doing it for a movie.
  • The boxing scenes were shot on real rings where the state tournaments took place.
  • The debutante Zoya Hussain was also told to learn sign language and took several months to learn it. The silence of the girl symbolizes the lack of voice of women in that region.
  • The movie premiered at the Special Presentations Section in the 2017 TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL.

Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016)

Another among the best Anurag Kashyap movies, Raman Raghav 2.0 is based on the serial killer Raman Raghav who operated his killings in Mumbai in the 1960s. This is a psychological crime thriller. 2.0 is added to this movie because it is influenced by 1st film made on psycho Raman which was directed by Sriram Raghwan in 1991.

  • Anurag Kashyap wanted Raman track in the movie Bombay velvet as a serial killer in the 1960s but then decided to make a full-fledged movie on him. 
  • The movie was shot in 20 days and the budget was 3.5 crores.
  • It was shot in a restricted area near the Mumbai airport where photography is forbidden.
  • Vicky Kaushal in this movie plays a corrupt cop, in the movie Kaushal puffs cocaine which actually was a powder made of glucon-D and corn starch.
  • Nawazuddin isolated himself for many days and feared himself of getting depressive.
  • Vicky Kaushal smoked nearly 3-5 packets of cigarettes in a single day to get into the character. 
  • The movie was screened at the Director’s Fortnight Section in Cannes in 2016.

Paanch (2003)

While one of the earlier Anurag Kashyap movies, Paanch was a crime thriller lightly based on Joshi-Abhyankar serial murder case in Pune. The movie was never released. It was just released in several film festivals. It revolves around a few friends who are broke and self-destructive. They kidnap one of their college mates for money and the events follow.

    • The movie was shot in 40 days.
    • It was leaked online in 2010.
    • Anurag Kashyap wanted to make this movie in 1999 with Manoj Bajpayee and Raveena Tandon as the lead but things didn’t work out and he took kay kay Menon and Tejaswini Kolhapure as his lead.

It was initially refused by the censor board. Censor board gave 6 reasons of its refusal-

  • The film glorifies violence, in a way that is unacceptable.
  • Presents the procedure of crime/killing policemen.
  • Use of drugs is shown in the movie.
  • Consists of double meaning dialogues (sexual undertone).
  • No positive characters.
  • Does not carry a social message.
  • Nana Patekar’s “faansi ka fanda” is based on the same real-life story.


No Smoking (2007)

No smoking is a movie with mixed genres. It is also Bollywood’s first movie with several interpretations. It’s a psychological thriller that revolves around K (John Abraham) who is a chain-smoker. It’s one of the best Anurag Kashyap movies and an intriguing one too. 

  • Kay kay Menon was the first choice for the movie but he said that some superstar that has stardom should be approached for the movie. SRK was approached after menon but he refused as he felt that it promoted anti-smoking feelings.
  • John loved the script and instantly agreed to do the movie.
  • For the role-playing of K, john smoked 99 cigarettes in a single day and he passionately did his character.
  • When John got to know that an item number was added to the movie, he told the makers that it was wrong to commercialize such a movie.
  • John was also against for the regular release of the movie, he wanted it to just release it in film festivals.
  • This movie now regarded as a cult classic in india got a great response outside India but not in India at that time.   
  • This movie was shot in 40 days.

Manmarziyan (2018)

The movie is a comedy, drama, love triangle film starring Tapsee Pannu, Abhishek Bachchan, and Vicky Kaushal. It is a love story set in Amritsar, Punjab. It was released internationally as HUSBAND MATERIAL in 2018. It’s one of the most under-rated but best Anurag Kashyap movies for sure. 

  • The first choice leads to the movie were- Ayushman Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar, and Dulquer Salman.
  • The movie was inspired by the love story of writer and poet Amrita Pritam.
  • Twins dancing in some breaks of the movie are reflecting the main characters’ perplexities.
  • Abhishek Bachchan played Sardar for the 1st time.
  • This movie was screened at the 43rd Toronto International Film Festival.
  • Sameer Sharma was replaced by Aanand L. Rai as he wasn’t happy with the shots. Ashwini replaced Sameer and she declined due to other commitments. At last Anurag Kashyap was roped in.
