For all the social censure attached to it, lying is an important skill – one that we all use with some frequency. In a way, the entire society is built upon a delicate fabric of lies and half-truths that we tell almost regularly without even thinking about it. Sometimes for self-preservation, and at other times out of sheer politeness. So since you must use it at some point in your life anyway, you might as well learn how to do it well and effectively.
1.Eye-Contact:
Maintaining eye contact while fibbing your way out of a sticky situation is a very useful skill, but one that can be rather hard to learn. Be that as it may, one must work hard at it if one wants to be an effective liar. Maintaining eye-to-eye contact with your audience makes almost anything seem like absolute truth.
2.Laid-back Attitude: To be an effective liar, one must hide all indications of stress or discomfiture from one’s body language while bluffing. Lying can be a rather strenuous task, but you must appear to be at ease and completely untroubled at all times. This makes the audience feel confident in your assertions. No one will believe you if you don’t seem to believe in yourself.
3.Nervous Ticks:
Remove all nervous ticks from your body language. Don’t lick your lips or bite your nails while you spin a yarn to your teacher about the naughty dog that ate your homework. Nervous habits are a dead giveaway while bluffing. There’s a reason professional card players need to have a ‘poker-face’ as do successful conmen.
4.Good Memory: One of the most important assets of a great liar is a good memory. To not give yourself away, you must remember exactly what you told that other person that other day about the color of your dog’s tail so that you can’t be caught for any slip-ups. Remembering the nuances of past conversations and lies is the key to making up believable bluffs.
5.Half-Truths:
While making up a convincing story, it is always advisable to have some truth elements. A half-truth always seems more credible than a completely cock-and-bull story. This way, you can even provide some proof for the real half of your story if called upon to do so, thus validating the rest of your claims!
6.Charm:
People are more willing to suspend disbelief and trust a charming and loveable trickster than a gruff and annoying irritant. Most people will let a lot slide unnoticed if only you are nice to them. So when trying to get away with a fib, do it with a big smile on your face and a hearty greeting on your lips. You’ll stand a much higher chance of passing undetected. People are the most suspicious of those whom they like the least.
7.Alibi:
Even if you think that you’ll never need it, always have believable alibis in place whenever you tell a lie. So if you’re gonna tell your teacher that your dog ate your homework, make sure that you at least have a dog at home for the said teacher to pet, just in case she drops by. If all else fails, make sure to feed the neighborhood stray dogs lots of biscuits so they’d hang about your house, ready to take the blame for any unsubmitted homework at a moment’s notice!
I do not promote the act of lying, but if there is ever a situation where you cannot get away without lying, then use these tips to sound more genuine and real.
