Food stamps are not stamps at all, but rather assistance provided to individuals, couples, and families with very low incomes. It is in place to assist an individual and his/her family in eating nutritious meals on a budget.
Food Stamps are now known as SNAP. We will see about that in the further part of the blog.
What Can You Buy With Food Stamps? If you are wondering the same, this blog is right away to help you.
1. Surge In Food Stamps
When the epidemic hit in 2020, participation in the U.S. Department of Agricultureโs SNAP โ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, popularly known as food stamps, skyrocketed! The program now reached almost 42 million individuals.
In October 2021, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients saw a significant increase in monthly spending when the USDA increased payments by 25% from pre-pandemic levels.
The permanent change increased the average monthly payout to around $157 per person. Some new features have just been added for SNAP customers. The USDA approved a waiver, which resulted in the programโs creation.
Amazon also offers a section dedicated to consumers who get government aid. Amazon Access includes a SNAP EBT hub and Prime Access, which offers SNAP consumers a 50% discount on Prime membership.
If youโre new to food assistance programs and arenโt sure how they operate, hereโs a list of items you can buy with SNAP benefits.
2. What Can You Buy With Food Stamps
2.1. Seeds and Plants
Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day; teach him how to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime. The USDA permits SNAP recipients to purchase seeds and plants to cultivate food in order to promote self-sufficiency.
So, while you may start a garden, you cannot start a farm: EBT cards cannot be used to purchase live animals such as hens to lay eggs or livestock for slaughter. Buying live seafood is also forbidden. Fish that have been removed from the water and Shellfish are exceptions.
2.2. Fare From The Farmerโs Market
EBT cardholders in all 50 US states can use SNAP to purchase at farmerโs markets. To participate in the initiative, markets must have a special license, so hunt for qualifying markets in your region.
Though individual vendors may be able to accept SNAP transactions, there is usually a single point-of-sale terminal where consumers swipe EBT cards and are given tokens or paper receipts to submit in return for food goods at stalls or storefronts.
SNAP customers can get double credit for their EBT dollars in select areas, albeit there is a restriction on how much they can earn. Butcher shops and meat markets accept SNAP benefits as well.
2.3. Groceries
Food stamps are no longer issued in the form of tangible vouchers. SNAP funds are now put into electronic benefits transfer cards that function similarly to debit cards. EBT cards are accepted at grocery shops and other authorized businesses.
47 states and the District of Columbia agreed to participate in the experiment in response to growing safety concerns about in-person purchasing during the epidemic.
Many supermarkets partner with famous grocery delivery service Instacart to fulfill orders and now, through December 31, 2022, buyers buying with EBT SNAP at certain merchants will enjoy free delivery or pickup on the first three purchases of $35 or more.
Except for Alaska, Amazon also provides grocery delivery with EBT to customers in every state. Amazon Prime memberships are cheaper for SNAP recipients.
2.4. Energy Drinks
The Food and Nutrition Service will not ground you if Red Bull gives you wings. Energy drinks with nutrition data labeling qualify as food products and can be purchased with EBT.
However, if your preferred energy drink has a supplement facts label, it falls into the same category as vitamins and medications and will not pass muster.
2.5. Junk Food
There have been several proposals to limit the sorts of food that may be purchased with food stamps, particularly in view of rising concerns about obesity and diabetes in the United States.
Itโs recommended to stop eating junk foods, they are still permissible for purchase with SNAP benefits.
Arguments that food aid users should not be permitted for indulgences like steaks, lobster, and more expensive organic goods have also been rejected.
2.6. Foods In Restaurant
Despite broad limits on EBT purchases of hot food and food for immediate consumption, the Restaurant Meals Program offers exceptions for eligible beneficiaries in some states.
SNAP beneficiaries who are old, persons with disabilities who may be unable to make their own meals, and those who are homeless and do not have a place to store food can utilize SNAP at certain restaurants in Maryland, Virginia, Rhode Island, Michigan, Illinois, Arizona, and sections of California. New York will also have a program soon.
You can use the official USDA SNAP Retailer Locator to see which restaurants are participating in your region.
2.7. Gift Baskets and Cakes
Whatever your financial circumstances, special occasions like birthdays should be commemorated. Even if youโre using SNAP, youโll be able to have a dessert for your big occasion.
You need to keep in mind that the value of non-edible embellishments cannot exceed half of the cakeโs buying price.
You may use EBT not only to buy a cake but also to recognize an event or a holiday with a gift basket. However, the value of nonfood goods in these baskets cannot exceed half the cost. Because politicians have thought of everything, there is even a provision that allows you to buy pumpkins but not ornamental gourds when commemorating fall festivities.
3. SNAP โ Eligibility
Most persons who meet specified income and asset requirements are eligible for SNAP, with occasional exceptions for college students and striking employees.
The size of the household also influences income constraints. You can contact your local SNAP office for additional information. Also, you donโt need to be working to apply.
And most importantly, even noncitizens can apply. Benefits are available. However, there may be a long waiting time.
4. Never Use Your Food Stamps To Buy The Following Things
4.1. Personal-Hygiene Products and Diapers
Cosmetics, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, and soaps are not eligible for purchase with SNAP. Diapers and baby wipes are neither SNAP-eligible nor covered by the WIC โ Women, Infants, and Children program.
Despite long-standing efforts by activists to develop government programs to address diaper requirements, only families living below the federal poverty line presently get funds that can be used to purchase infant diapers.
The National Diaper Bank Network collaborates with diaper manufacturers and community organizations to deliver free diapers to needy parents.
4.2. Items from the Pharmacy
Vitamins, vitamins, and medications for non-prescription and prescription are also not eligible for SNAP assistance. Some of these expenses may be covered by Medicare or Medicaid.
4.3. Liquor, Beer, and Wine
Prepare to become a teetotaler or pay out of cash for any alcoholic beverages. Wine and beer from the grocery store, as well as hard liquor, are prohibited.
Furthermore, SNAP cannot purchase meals in liquor stores, wineries, or other establishments that sell alcoholic beverages.
4.4. Tobacco and Cigarette Products
Another habit that is not encouraged is smoking. EBT cannot be used to purchase cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, or other tobacco products.
Even though e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, they are listed alongside tobacco goods on the list of prohibited items, as are e-cig refills.
Penalties for using EBT to purchase tobacco goods or alcoholic drinks can be severe, and in some areas, recipients disobey the regulations are automatically barred from receiving benefits.
4.5. Hot Cooked Food
Convenience frequently comes at a cost, and the Food and Nutrition Service does not want to bear that burden. Hot meals and prepared foods that must be consumed immediately or on the premises are not eligible for purchase with an EBT card.
So rotisserie chicken is out, as are steamed or fried shrimp, shellfish, stews, soups, and chili. On the other hand, cold deli goods, such as sliced lunchmeat, packed sandwiches, salads, and sushi rolls, should be alright. Despite this, some beneficiaries report that sushiโs SNAP eligibility is a source of contention at some retailers.
Purchases at petrol stations and convenience stores are authorized, but food from your favorite coffee shop is not. There is considerable leeway in using SNAP to buy Starbucks goods, notably canned beverages or packaged snacks at target kiosks or grocery stores.
5. Food Stamps โ A Boon To The Society!
SNAP payments are provided to program members; however, the true benefits are the contributions SNAP provides to society.
SNAP has been dubbed as the foundation of the countryโs nutrition safety net and is one of the most essential programs in the United States to combat hunger and food poverty.
The initiative has also been proven to benefit the economy by increasing customer spending in supermarkets and grocery stores around the whole country!
