Today we will look into different fillers that you can use for different projects. All of them come is tube or cartridges which can be loaded in caulking guns. What type of filler you need will be decided by the purpose and the material you are using it on.
Kitchen and Bathroom Fillers
Many times we need to fill the lining of tiles or areas around the tub or sink in the kitchen. The fillers are made from materials that can withstand moisture and mildew. They dry easily and can be used shortly after applying. They come in matching colors with tiles and fixtures and can be used for counter top installations, faucet installation, shower and tub repair etc.
Wooden Doors and Windows Fillers
Caulks for use around doors and windows are made not to shrink or crack. Fillers made from latex and other solvents can be used to fill in small gaps on windows or wooden doors. They come in matching colors to blend in with the installation. This kind of filler is not very strong and you cannot use it outdoors. You can use epoxy fillers which offer more strength and structural integrity for wide gaps or cracks on wood. Nails or screws can be driven through the filling without any tension of cracking.
Fillers for Exterior Use
These fillers are perfect for outdoor projects like installing a new window or doing trim work. Most of the fillers are silicon based or a mix of acrylic with added silicon. Exterior patching job also demands filler which is moisture resistant and can withstand UV rays.
They can expand and contract with the changing weather and does not crack or split. They are made from weather resistant and elastomeric materials. You can apply paint over acrylic based solutions, but the silicone fillers cannot be painted upon. You have to choose a matching color.
Concrete Fillers
Concrete fillers can be used on any architectural structure made of concrete like driveways and sidewalks. The fillers can be used to fill gaps and openings in building joints, pavements, etc. They are highly moisture resistant and can be exposed to water shortly after applying.
Being designed for exterior use, they are also able to withstand harsh weathers. Expanding foam fillers made from Polyurethane can be useful for filling large gaps like while installing a pipe. The foam expands after applying and fills the gap bonding with concrete linings to fill the gaps.
Furniture Repair Fillers
Many times we need to fill in holes and joints and cover gaps on chairs, tables, cupboards and other furniture. You can use latex and solvent based fillers for small job where you just want to cover up something. For repairing, you need to apply epoxy fillers which have more structural strength. It is available in color or transparent base and can be matched with the tone of your furniture.
Gutter and Pipe Fillers
The durable and flexible fillers are used around metal surfaces and joints to close leaks or seal gaps. They are ideal for use on roof vents, drainspouts, flasing, gutters, etc and are weather resistant.
Other Types of Fillers
Roof Fillers – Used to take care of small rook leaks. The caulk is moisture and mildew resistant and expandable.
Asphalt Fillers – For blacktop asphalt roads, this kind of filler is perfect for repairing parking lots, personal roads and other asphalt surfaces. The filler is extremely strong and waterproof. It also withstands pollution and weather elements effectively.
Fire Retardant Fillers – For use around wires, vents, fireplaces, HVAC ducts, etc, the fillers are made from fire resistant materials. It can take high temperatures and are non-combustible.
