In the wizarding world, Gryffindor is often dismissed as the “basic” Hogwarts house—the one everyone gravitates toward because it represents bravery, the signature trait of iconic heroes like Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. But is Gryffindor truly as simple as it seems? Or are we overlooking its depth?

Indeed the name Gryffindor resonates with popularity but it is not vain. It stands for courage determination and daring which creates people who take risks and stand for what is right in order to retire the change. In This world which is quite burdening these are not basic in any sense.

The main characters are often considered to be from Gryffindor and as a result, it attracts the most annoyance of the audience. This over familiarity makes it easier for many of the audiences to have a predictable feel about the house compared to Ravenclaws’ intelligence, Hufflepuffs’ dedication and Sytherin’s ambition. However, Gryffindor’s focus on bravery isn’t one-dimensional. It’s not just about slaying dragons or fighting Dark Lords; it’s about moral courage—the kind of bravery it takes to admit you’re wrong, stand alone, or defend those who can’t defend themselves.

Think about Neville Longbottom, whose quiet resilience and personal growth define a different kind of courage. Or Hermione, who fights with a sword of her mind, who fights not for glory but for knowledge, not for herself, but for justice. There’s even Ron, grappling with self-doubt, reminding us of the courage it takes to show up and do battle when one feels insignificant – “this too shall pass”. Considering things in this manner, perhaps there is room enough for each and every one of us to consider ourselves as a potential grad of that Hall.

Whenever someone think of Gryffindors, someone must first feel pity toward them for being what we call “Basic”. What has been called basic in lieu of knowing the nuance of being a Gryffindor stands as a testament to what real courage is. Its not only the gunfire and flashy showmanship that we find attractive, but strength within oneself that earns everyone’s respect. They say that take courage to be different and even more to be contrasting or cross-cultural but knowing of how fear is aplenty, Oh how Gryffindor has character whilst being contradictory to contemporary stances. Basic? Nowhere near. Bold? For sure.
