Here’s your guide on how to grow strawberries…
Strawberry is a red-coloured fruit, which is very popular among people for its sweet-sour taste. Nowadays, more than 600 varieties of strawberries are growing around the world and each variety has its unique or extraordinary flavour. Strawberries were a wild fruit growing out in the forests hundreds of years ago.
Those strawberries were smaller and they had much less sweat than the strawberries we eat today. It was a French gardener 265 years ago who first darkened strawberries in his garden and now in the United Kingdom, Strawberries are one of the people’s favourite summer fruits.

We like to eat them in summer pettings, food salads, and jellies. Strawberries have more vitamin C and a 150-gram portion of strawberries will provide you with all the vitamin C an individual needs for a day. As you know vitamin C helps to keep your skin, blood, and bones healthy, so a strawberry a day can benefit you a lot.
One interesting fact about Strawberry is that it is not a berry. The scientific definition of a berry- berry is a fruit that consists of seeds inside its flesh. If you look for the characteristics of berries in the strawberries, you will just find that the seeds are on the outside.
The scientific name of these seeds is ovaries. The strawberry plants are grown from seeds. A new baby plant starts growing straight from here. They are not grown from runner shoots.
Today, there are many varieties of strawberries that we can buy meaning they are coming in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and they all have one thing in common, their taste.

Well, our main topic of interest here is how to grow strawberries. So, let’s get going with that…
How to Grow Strawberries?
Here is a step-by-step guide:
- First, buy some ripe strawberries from the market.
- Strawberry seeds are situated around the exterior surface of the flesh. You can harvest them to plant your strawberries.
- Peel the skin of the strawberry with a sharp knife. Do not cut more deeply into the fruit.
- Cut the strawberries in a way that we get the seeds and a little flesh easily.
- Take clean and dry tissue paper. Place the strips of seeds on tissue paper or a paper towel.
- Gently press the strips of strawberry seeds down into the tissue paper or paper towel.
- Spread the skins on tissue paper and leave them to dry.
- You will need to put them in full sunlight for 2 to 3 days to dry.
- After 3 days, the skins are completely dry and at this stage, we can easily extract seeds from them. You will then need to rub the strawberry surface with your hands to loosen the seeds.
- Now, you have to take a medium-sized pot in which drainage holes are present at the bottom. Cover the holes with small stones for effective drainage.
- Next, you need to use a mix of 70% cocopeat and 30% compost. It is better to mix 1 tablespoon of fungicide powder in the mix to avoid rot problems. Now, put the soil mix you prepared in the pot.
- Press this soil mix with your hands to make an even surface.
- Now, spread the seeds of the strawberry over the surface of the soil you prepared. Seeds do not require coverage.
- Water gently with a shower or sprinkler.
- Cover the pot with plastic wrap. The wrap will keep the moisture intact and will help the seeds to remain moist until they germinate.
- Keep the pot in full sun. The germination can take a minimum of 12 days and a maximum of 30 to 35 days, so you will need to wait patiently.
- Once you can see the seeds germinating, remove the plastic wrap.
- Once the seedlings are of appropriate size, then they can be transplanted into individual cells for their healthy growth.
- Water well after transplanting.
- Seedlings are ready to be transplanted once they have grown 3 to 4 true leaves that are baby plants. 6-to-8-inch diameter pots are good enough for planting. Make sure they have proper drainage holes at the bottom.
- Cover drainage holes with small stones. Stones will permit water to drain freely.
- To ensure the best growth from your plant, you need to provide well-draining soil fed with organic compost.
- For the final planting, you will need to use a mix of 50 percent garden soil, 30 percent compost, and 20 percent cocopeat.
- Fill the pot with the soil mix.
- Gently take out the baby plants or seedlings with the help of a gardening tool and make sure that the root ball of the baby plant or seedling should remain intact with the soil.
- You should plant one seedling per pot. In this way, they can grow freely as they will have enough space to grow.
- Now, you need to make a hole in the center that should be deep and wide enough for the roots.
- Now, place the root ball of the seedling or baby plant into the hole you made and wrap the roots with soil. You should have to make sure that the crown or the place where the stem meets the roots should remain above the surface of the soil. Plant all the seedlings like this.
- Spread the soil around the stem of the seedling with your fingers to provide support.
- After planting, water the plants immediately to make the soil moist.
- After some days, they will become mother plants and they will have their strawberries.
Few Things To Keep in Mind
1. Location of Pots
Keep the pots in direct sunlight and add water whenever the soil starts to dry up to keep the soil moist. There is a need for direct sunlight for 5 to 7 hours for the healthy growth of strawberries and they require an 8 to 24 degrees Celcius of temperature range.
2. Planting Time
The planting time for strawberries is winter months that is October to February whenever the temperature is between 6 to 24 (43 to 76 F) degree Celsius.
3. Fertilizers

After every 18 to 20 days, add fertilizer to boost the plant’s growth. Make a hole away from the stem and add half a tablespoon of mustard cake powder. You can also add NPK fertilizer (mix a half tablespoon in 2 litres of water and add 100 ml mix in one go) to make rich compost. Fruit is typically ready to be harvested 3 to 4 weeks after blossoming or flowering or after getting converted into young strawberry plants.
You can harvest strawberries as they turn red. Just cut by the stem only, do not pull the fruit or you could damage the plant.
Harvest strawberries as soon as they turn red and ripe or convert into ripe fruit. Strawberries that sit on the top surface of the soil for a long time will rot. And if the birds are eating strawberries on the plant, it is a sign to you to harvest them and consider installing bird netting over your plants.
