Like any other innovative journey, writing a book on your own is a creative venture and when it comes to writing a children’s book, it’s one of the best ways to show your entire creativity in a kiddy way. However, if you are worried about publishing the book, then let me tell you, write first, show your creativity, and then worry about publishing, which isn’t a difficult part at all.
Worrying about anything will ruin your innovation and mood, so follow the ways listed below to write a children’s book and move on to the publishing part step-by-step.
1. Select a topic for a story and create a character
The first step to getting on with your journey of writing a children’s book is to select a delightful and interesting topic for your book. However, ensure that the topic chosen is children-friendly and to select an appropriate topic, you can do a little bit of research about trending children’s books and find a similarity between them being popular. Next, choose the cute and innocent protagonist of your story that children can connect with.
2. Select a title and an appropriate length
Further, select a suitable catchy title for the story and make it short, so children can easily understand and get the meaning of it. The title can be funny also but should support the story. Moving ahead, before writing the story, consider the group of different ages children and fix a length according to that. For instance, a 200-word story sounds good for kids between 0-3 age while 200-500 words for 2-5 age children and 500-800 words for 3-7 age children seems reasonable.
3. Set up a schedule
Schedule setting is mandatory, so you don’t distracted from writing and can stick to your fixed schedule with great consistency and determination. Also, don’t slow down on your writing pace, there are many children’s books out there, that failed to get published just because of a slow process.
4. Start writing the story
Time to write the story! The above 3 steps are enough to consider initially before writing a story, now without wasting any more time in thinking and considering, begin writing because what needs to be done tomorrow, is necessary to start it today.
5. Create a problem
Children love problems and solving riddles. However, this riddle must be related to the character of your story which can make your book more exciting for kids. But, on the other hand, also remember that these problems must be easy according to their age groups.
6. Look for the editor and illustrator
Editing and illustrating are the post-processing parts. Once you are done writing the book, look for a children’s book editor as an editor can help you improvise your concept, problems, and illustrations you have used, and can give you the right suggestions before publishing. Also, you can ensure that the editor is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) – a professional, not a rookie.
Further, hiring an illustrator will help you improvise the design, fonts, and pictures of your book that match your story well and make it pleasing to kids. It’s one of the most important steps, so the more you spend on it, the more successful your book can become.
7. Do the Publishing
As for the publishing part, you can either post your book online or offline with hard copies. Both parts are the paid process. There are many book publishing organizations, you can search for the one with great reach and reviews for your publishing. They will publish your book in your preferred way and make it accessible to a wide range of audiences. Don’t forget to know the terms and conditions before finalizing one.
