Every material you can think of is enhanced by using additives and coatings. Metals do not rust as a coating protects it, PVC doesn’t melt in the heat or go brittle in the cold, and materials that are scrub and scratch resistant are normally coated with a polymer to keep their shine. Other porous materials are sealed using a polymer to keep out water. There is a lot to be said about a good additive.
Arguably, companies such as Xiran are taking this forward considerably. They have developed an SMA (styrene maleic anhydride) derivative and additive solution that is comprised of sustainable rather than unsustainable ingredients. This breakthrough not only makes the company greener, ticking a lot of boxes in the process, but it also makes the end product it is applied to greener.
Sustainability and the Wider World
Several NGO commentators and politicians have alluded in recent years that unless a company takes its environmental social governance (ESG) policies seriously, it simply will not be allowed to do business going forwards.
With media weight, companies that do not comply with new environmental social governance policies will cease to exist, driven out of business through a raft of bad publicity designed to turn public opinion against them.
Given the power of political media, there is little a company can do to repel this. As such, to trade and survive, a company must start to put ESG front and centre. This is why nearly every TV and radio commercial feature some nod towards sustainability.
Furthermore, new laws will come into force worldwide that will make it illegal for a company to trade that does not allude to ESG.
SMA, gives more than a nod to sustainability, as it delivers performance as well as cutting out as many unsustainable ingredients as possible in its products.
SMA Adding Value
The SMA derivatives and additive solutions enable the end product producer to show compliance with ESG. This is invaluable as stated above, and it gives a good feeling all around, as wherever the material is used, everyone that has contact with it knows it is ESG compliant.
The use of SMA in industries such as manufacturing and construction, traditionally both of which have not earned the best reputation from a sustainability viewpoint, enhances the reputation and public perception considerably.
It is not just good marketing practice to show that you are sustainability aware to your clients and customers. It is now a requirement to survive and be able to trade.
It is hard to imagine that traditional solvent based derivatives and additives existing in a few years. SMA, and products in the same vein and created with sustainability in mind, will be the only product that a company can use.
It is good news then, that when it comes to protecting materials from water ingress, temperature changes, corrosion, abrasion and scrub and scratch damage, SMA delivers one of the best protection solutions on the market.
If you need a sustainable derivatives and additive solutions then SMA is a product that should be on your radar.
