Gardening sounds fun but what makes it sound better is “vegetable gardening1“. Though there are many benefits of having a garden at home, the thing that makes vegetable gardening more interesting is that along with flowers, you also get to watch fruit and vegetables grow from scratch. Regardless of the fresh feeling and peaceful vibe that you get in a green area, having a vegetable garden at your home will allow you to get the taste of freshly grown vegetables as well. However, it becomes a little hard to make a garden in the homes in the cities as homes in the cities usually have fewer garden spaces to grow plants. So, I’m sharing some useful and easy tips to grow a vegetable garden in your home.
1. Choose a Location
Finding a location is a significant step. However, it doesn’t matter whether the location is small or big, you can grow your garden even in a small balcony space. Also, you can try terrace gardening if you have sufficient space on your terrace and there is less chance of harm from birds or other creatures. However, I would recommend making a vegetable garden in a smaller space if you are a beginner to test your gardening skills.

2. Plan a Layout for Your Urban Garden
Choosing a layout for your garden depends on the amount of space you have. You can either choose row gardening, in which you will grow plants in a row with little walking distance between them or you can try intense gardening means growing as much as plants in whatever space you have. So, I think you should go for an intense one, and grow a plethora of plants together in the space you have.
3. Ensure to Plant in Rich and Fertile Soil
The next crucial thing to consider is the quality of the soil2. If you want your plants to grow healthy and green, firstly ensure that the soil you are using is rich in nutrients and fertile. Once you know your soil is good enough for your garden, you can sow seeds or grow plants in it. As for the future, making your own humus at home with organic waste and adding it to your gardening soil will help maintain the fertility of the soil. Also, it’s better to add some worms in soil as they make it fertile too.
My first urban vegetable garden. Neighbors who moved out left these cinderblocks, healthy fertile soil with giant worms, and some strawberries which I took advantage of replanting. Going to add salad greens, beans, peas, cucumbers, and flowers to the beds. Wish me luck! 🤞

4. Plant Your Favorite Veggies
Now, one of the reasons to grow a vegetable garden at home is to get fresh and chemical-free vegetables for their best taste and nutrients. So, I think you will love your garden more if it has your favorite veggies in it. So, feel free to grow whatever you like to eat.

5. Be Prepared for Pests
At last, one thing that can concern you in gardening is the pest attack or the fear of spreading diseases among plants. Also, regarding pests you need to be concerned from the first day as there is no fixed time when will they start replicating themselves in your garden and begin harming your precious plants, which you have put lots of effort into growing. To overcome this concern, you can consult with some gardening owners or workers in nurseries about necessary pesticides you will need to use to keep the pests away from your garden.
