How many Shrek movies are there?
The world of Shrek is so vast that one could easily get lost in it!
From feature films to spin-offs and short films and television specials, there is just so much happening in the universe of Shrek.
Here is an attempt to make it all a bit clear.
This section will discuss the main films, which are the feature films focusing on Shrek. We will also get to answer whether there is a fifth Shrek movie?
Shrek – 2001
The first and original Shrek movie was released on 22nd April 2001.
The story of Shrek was loosely based on the works of William Steig. Still, it mainly focuses on the adventures of Shrek, who starts off his journey to reclaim his land by rescuing Princess Fiona from the clutches of an evil dragon and, along the way, becomes friends with a super talkative donkey.
Shrek is a cranky but kind-hearted green ogre who lives a quiet life overrun fairy tale creatures invading and taking over his swamp. He finds out that they have been exiled to the swamp by Lord Farquaad.
Wanting to reclaim his swamp, he reluctantly befriends a talkative donkey, and they head to meet Lord Farquaad, who then demands that they must rescue Princess Fiona, a human, to get back the swamp.
Shrek and Donkey then set off to rescue the princess, who was held captive by a dragon. After a lot of struggle, they manage to escape with Princess Fiona, and along the way, Shrek falls in love with the princess.
He later interrupts her wedding with Lord Farquaad to declare his love, and Shrek and Fiona get married, turning Fiona into an ogre because of a curse placed upon her.
There is also an interesting angle of a love story between the Donkey and the dragon that had captured Fiona.
Shrek 2 – 2004
After the massive popularity of the first movie, the second movie of the series was released in 2004, titled ‘Shrek 2’. It is one of the most popular animated movies and the franchise’s highest-grossing film.
Shrek 2 picked up right from where the first movie left off, with Shrek and Fiona enjoying their honeymoon. Fiona’s parents are later invited to her hometown, whereupon reaching, and her family is shocked to see that they are ogres.

A plan to make Fiona’s cousin Artie the king is hatched which does not come without complications. Prince Charming is also interested in claiming the throne in this film that ensures proper chaos.
Another essential part of the film is Fiona being pregnant and Shrek’s struggle to be a father. Ogre triplets finally bless the couple at the movie’s end.

The fourth and, as of now, the latest movie of the series is Shrek forever after, 2010.
The movie starts with Shrek living a happy domestic life with his family, but it is soon revealed that he misses being a ‘real ogre.’ He gets tricked by a dealmaker named Rumpelstiltskin, and Shrek then finds himself in an alternate reality where things are messed up.
The setting of the world is the same, but with erased memories, the characters transform into something and someone completely different.
The entire film is a rewrite of the story in a fascinating way to provide a new perspective.
Towards the end of the film, Shrek manages to come back to the actual world and realizes that he has everything he ever wanted, and the movie ends on a happy note.
