It is the second Sunday of May. It is the day to remember our mother’s love and care for us. The world is celebrating the Mother’s Day on 14 May 2023.
Mother’s love starts even before a child is born and continues until her death. She sacrifices her body and life for the child. Her love is indeed priceless.
On the occasion of Mother’s Day, the world leaders are also remembering their mothers and Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the USA also remembered her mother.
The Vice President who is also the first woman Vice president expressed her gratitude and tribute to her mother and all mother for their care and love. Also, she states that her mother had two goals in her life; one was to raise her two daughters and the other to help the world fight breast cancer.
Kamala Harris tweeted said,
“My mother, Shyamala Gopalan, had two goals in her life: to raise her two daughters and end breast cancer. I am forever grateful to her and all mothers who love, raise, and inspire us. Happy Mother’s Day.”

1. Life
Shyamala Gopalan was born on December the 7th 1938. She was born in Chennai, India.

She was a scientist in biomedicine. Her work was aimed at identifying genes causing breast cancer. Moreover, she worked in the field of oncology at Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory.
She married Donald Harris in 1963 after dating him for 2 years. Kamala Harris and Maya Harris were born out of the marriage. But, the marriage could not survive long. And, both divorced in 1971.
She took custody of both children. However, the children continued to visit both their grandparents.
2. Children
Shyamala Gopalan was blessed with two daughters from her marriage to Donald Harris.
Kamala Harris is the eldest among them. She is not only a politician and an attorney but also the first women Vice President of the USA. Moreover, she is the highest-paid woman official in the USA today.
Maya Harris, on the other hand, is a lawyer and public advocate.
Additionally, she is also a vivid writer. Harris was one of the advisors during Hillary Clinton’s campaign policy agenda and moreover, she stood by her sister’s Presidential campaign.
3. Career
Shyamala worked at numerous research institutes during her lifetime. Besides working as a researcher at the University of Illinois, she also worked at the University of Wisconsin as a breast cancer researcher.
Thereafter, Shyamala worked at Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research for over 16 years and in the last decades of her life, she worked at Lawrence Berkley National Lab.
All of her works were aimed at the early identification of the genes responsible for breast cancer.
4. Death
Shyamala Gopalan had dedicated her entire life to studying genes causing breast cancer. But she was herself diagnosed with colon cancer, and sadly, she succumbed to death on 11th February 2009.
Kamala Harris paid respects to the mortal remains of her mother as per Indian traditions and her ashes were scattered in the Indian Ocean.
