It has been six months since I joined the book club with some classmates. Even between college, extracurriculars, and other daily activities, I managed to steal some time from my daily routine to join the book club, and now I think it was one of the best decisions of my year.

However, my classmates were already in this club, and I joined a lot later, so I was kind of nervous and excited at the same time. I was worried if I’d be able to finish the books within a certain time. Still, I gave myself a chance to take this initiative, and it turned out to be life-altering for me.

Here, I got to read those books or genres that I would never pick if it weren’t for the book club rules. We select some top picks over the internet based on the themed genres we have decided each month. For instance, we read fiction in January, supernatural in February, Sci-Fi in March, and it goes on like this.

I think having themes for each month is an excellent rule, as none of us can deny reading any genre. I guess it is a good thing, as I get to explore myself more in each kind of novel and its perceptions.

Then, we started reading books together, and our reading sessions lasted for an hour, but I always went home after an hour and a half. It’s because we discuss what we have read when we finish reading. Do we understand everything and whatever we are reading? Is it interesting? So, we always have a small discussion of 15-20 minutes about everyone’s reading, and it’s the most exciting part of the book club for me. Due to this, I always read books thoroughly so I can give brief or detailed insights about my reading.

So, my book club wasn’t like many other book clubs, where people gathered to read a little bit to gossip and drink a lot more.

Further, I couldn’t leave this club because we actually read here and share our insights. It may sound boring, but it isn’t at all.

Here, I learned to read continuously for over an hour without getting bored, which I couldn’t do before joining the group.

Previously, if I read a book and somebody had opposing perspectives compared to mine, I never agreed with them because I always thought that only my opinion was right. So, one of the interesting parts of joining the club was that I started to agree with the opinions and viewpoints of other people on the same topic. I got to explore myself more there, and it broadened my ability to think outside the box.

Further, we also make some time every 7 or 15 days to hang out, where we don’t talk about books at all and just have fun together. So, overall, joining a book club changed my reading habits, and it contributed to improving my perspective a lot. I also find it quite enjoyable and educational.
