Summer is regarded as the best season of the year since it is ideal for outdoor activities, including vacations, day trips, and summer vacations for kids. But with summers comes its own set of disadvantages including but not limited to heat rashes, skin tanning, damaged and dry skin, etc.
Sunscreen also known as sun blocker or sun cream offers protection from both ultraviolet A and B radiation. These rays are mostly to be blamed for sunburn, skin damage, heat rash, skin tanning, and other major issues like skin cancer. Sunscreens reflect, absorb, and scatter both forms of radiation.
Even if one is not going outside in the sun, sun protection should still be a part of one’s daily morning ritual to prevent the skin from aging. And what better than a sunscreen that is organic and free from chemicals?
The Icy Tales team talked to Mike Breslin, CEO of ProMed DME, about skin cancer and potential preventative actions. Here is what he said:
“Understanding the genetic predisposition to skin cancer is pivotal in formulating both preventive measures and personalized treatment plans for individuals at risk.
From my work with ProMed DME, where we frequently discuss patient education and the importance of early detection in conditions such as hypoglycemia, the parallels with managing skin cancer risk are apparent.
Just as with hypoglycemia, where early detection and education are key, skin cancer risk reduction hinges on awareness and preventive action tailored to individual risk profiles.
Ethical considerations are paramount when discussing genetic predispositions to any health condition, including skin cancer. It’s essential to approach such conversations with sensitivity and a focus on empowering individuals with information rather than instilling fear.
For example, in my work towards improving health outcomes through education at ProMed DME, it became evident that how information is presented can significantly impact patient engagement and proactive health management.
Similarly, when advising those with a family history of skin cancer, it’s critical to provide comprehensive, understandable information about their risks and underscore the importance and effectiveness of preventative measures, such as regular dermatological check-ups and protective behaviors against UV exposure.
Moreover, utilizing case studies or concrete data from experiences in managing other health conditions can offer valuable insights into effective communication strategies.
For instance, addressing the use of CGM devices for diabetes patients at ProMed DME highlights the importance of access to monitoring tools in managing health risks.
This parallels the need for accessible skin cancer screening and monitoring tools for those at high genetic risk.
By drawing on these experiences, one can advocate for an approach that balances informed precaution with a proactive, positive outlook on health management and prevention.”
We interviewed Evan Tunis, President of Florida Healthcare Insurance, on this. Here is what he had to say:
“Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, and it can be caused by a combination of environmental factors and genetic predisposition. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on understanding the role of genetics in skin cancer development.
Through genetic testing and research, we now have a better understanding of how certain genes can increase an individual’s risk of developing skin cancer.
Having a genetic predisposition to skin cancer can inform preventive measures for individuals at risk. For example, individuals with certain gene mutations may be advised to avoid prolonged sun exposure or to use specific types of sunscreen.
They may also be recommended to undergo regular screenings and have any suspicious moles or lesions examined by a dermatologist. Additionally, understanding an individual’s genetic predisposition can also help inform personalized treatment plans if they do develop skin cancer.”
Organic Sunscreens Vs Chemical Sunscreens
Organic sunscreen is just sunscreen devoid of dangerous ingredients. Organic sunscreen contains mineral filters and hence also mineral sunscreen.
The sole chemicals are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, the two most prevalent ones in Mineral Sunscreens, which protect the skin from UV rays.
If you’re worried about being exposed to chemicals over an extended period, you should opt for mineral sunscreen. Organic sunscreens are best for pregnant ladies, and people with sensitive skin types also they can be used for kids.
Chemical Sunscreen on the other hand usually contains these active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate, etc.
These ingredients might cause severe skin reactions in people with sensitive skin, worsen red patches, and may cause small pimples on the cheeks, nose, and forehead in acne-prone skin.
Prolonged usage of chemical sunscreens can hurt the texture of skin which can be avoided if you opt for natural sunscreen.
It is safer for the earth and your skin to use organic sunscreens rather than using chemical sunscreens.

The Icy Tales team talked to Shlomo Widder, MD, President of Widder Plastic Surgery Center, about the essential factors to consider when choosing a sunscreen. Here is what he said:
“As a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in dermatological procedures, I often discuss the importance of skincare, including sunscreen selection, with my patients. Choosing the right sunscreen is not solely about the SPF level, although it is crucial.
I advise looking for broad-spectrum sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays, preferably with an SPF of at least 30. This is crucial to guard against sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer.
From my practical experience, especially dealing with aging and sun-damaged skin during procedures like face and neck lifts, I’ve learned that the texture and formulation of the sunscreen also play a significant role in patient compliance.
For instance, individuals with oily skin may prefer water-based or gel sunscreens that do not exacerbate their skin condition, while those with dry skin may benefit from creamier, moisturizing formulations.
The key is choosing a product that feels good on your skin, as this encourages regular use, which is vital for effective protection.
Furthermore, while choosing products, I emphasize the importance of ingredients.
Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often recommended because of their ability to provide physical barriers against UV radiation without excessive chemical exposure, making them suitable for sensitive skin types.
Each patient’s skin type and concerns guide the recommendations made, ensuring personalized skincare that maximizes both safety and efficacy.”

“In my work as a doctor and plastic surgeon, I emphasize the significance of sunscreen not only in skincare but also in maintaining the health and vitality of one’s skin, which is crucial in the realm of plastic surgery. When selecting a sunscreen, several factors come into play.
One, the SPF level is paramount as it denotes the degree of protection against harmful UV rays, which are the primary culprits in premature aging and skin cancer.
Opting for a broad-spectrum sunscreen ensures defense against both UVA and UVB rays, safeguarding against photoaging and potential DNA damage.
Two, texture is another vital consideration, particularly for individuals with specific skin types or concerns, such as oily or acne-prone skin. Non-comedogenic formulas are preferable to prevent pore clogging and breakouts.
Third, scrutinizing the ingredients is crucial, favoring non-toxic and skin-friendly components like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which provide effective protection without causing irritation or adverse reactions, especially post-operative.
Fourth, while brand reputation can serve as a guide, it’s essential to prioritize scientific evidence and formulation efficacy over mere marketing claims.
