1. Cats have a genetic defect, because of which they can’t taste sweet things.
Cat’s are incredibly clever and can do several unseemingly possible things such as jump high, squeeze through the tiniest gaps, fall from a great height and still land on their feet. They also apparently have 9 lives. However, the one thing they can’t do is taste sweet things. According to a research article published in 2007, cats lack 247 base pairs of amino acids. These pairs make up the DNA of the Tas1r2 gene. Thus, it doesn’t register proper protein and prevents cats from tasting sweetness.
2. The weight of five standard pickup trucks could be bared by a small cubic inch of human bone.
Human bodies may feel like they are incredibly fragile and vulnerable to us. However, in reality, our bones are powerful. A bone is more durable than steel since one bar od steel would weigh four times as much.
One cubic inch of bone can hold a load of up to 8,626 kg or more! That’s roughly the weight of about five pickup trucks. This makes our bones four times as strong as concrete. Thus, our human bones, despite how fragile they feel, are more durable than steel and concrete both.
3. The closest living relatives of the Tyrannosaurus rex are the chicken and the ostrich.
As we all know, dinosaurs were huge lizard-like creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago. Once upon a time, we would think that the crocodiles or alligators were the closest relatives of the dinosaurs. But now, it’s shown that present-day birds share more in common with the dinosaurs than the reptiles. Researched and confirmed in Harvard University in 2008, the Tyrannosaurus rex shares most of its genetic samples with ostriches and chickens, rather than with alligators and crocodiles.
4. If your nose is shut, you won’t be able to tell the difference between an apple, a potato, and an onion.
According to the University of Florida’s Center for Smell and Taste, our sense of smell helps us interpret about 80% of what we can taste. So if it weren’t for your smelling sense, you wouldn’t be able to differentiate between apples, potatoes, and onions. This is why most people, while taking their medicine, pinch their nose shut– To avoid having to suffer through the awful taste. This stupid fact is known to most of us but never realized.
5. The inventor of Pringles took his invention to his grave.
Fredric Baur is the genius behind the idea of uniformly stacking chips in a can instead of having them in a bag. He was so proud of this invention of his that he communicated to his family that upon his death, they buried him in a Pringles can. His children debated on what flavor to choose but ultimately decided to go with the original character. And that’s how the inventor of Pringles took his invention to his grave, literally.
6. Guess who invented the word “Nerd.”
The word “Nerd” first appeared in a 1050 Dr. Seuss book, If I Ran the Zoo. Yes, that’s right! Dr. Seuss came up with the common term “nerd.” The passage where he used it reads –
“And then, just to show them, I’ll sail to Ka-Troo
and bring back an It-Kutch, a Preep and a Proo.
A Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker, too!”
A year later, the Merriam Webster dictionary included the word “nerd” in the latest article on slang. Such a stupid fact, but the term is still used in most of our lives.
7. In Victorian English, rainbows were called “bows of promise.”
One of the most beautiful words in English is the word “rainbow.” Filled with bright colors, a rainbow brings joy and hope to everyone who sees it or thinks of it. According to the Washington Post, most people who spoke Victorian English had another beautiful term for the multicolored arch of light. In Victorian English, rainbows were called “Bows of Promise.” Isn’t that just lovely?
8. There’s a visual illusion at the bottom of the ocean.
As we all know, the ocean contains several wonders and secrets which are yet to be discovered. In March 2019, scientists discovered one such mystery. They were exploring an underwater volcano about 6,500 feet under the sea when they spotted a small, upside-down lake-like pool. I know it doesn’t make sense. The Schmidt Ocean Institute provided a video of this underwater illusion and further explained that the liquid in those upside-down pools is hydrothermal exhaust liquid. The cash is a mixture of harsh chemicals, going up to 320 degrees in temperature. These chemicals help life to exist in the deep dark ocean. The underwater illusion was filled with such beauty, and it was majestic.
9. Dolphins give each other names.
Each bottleneck dolphin emits specific whistles. Research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2013 has proved that each of those whistles is unique, and each dolphin has its distinctive whistle. These whistles are just like human names. The Bottlenose Dolphins, as they grow, develop a unique identity whistle.
Their signature signal. This whistle encrypts individual identity separately from the voice features of the dolphins. So, the copying of signature whistles allows animals to address or name one another. This is how most animals communicate.
10. Around 16 million people living today are direct descendants of Genghis Khan
Genghis Khan was the cruelest leader of the Mongol Empire, which lasted from 1206-1227. However, he wasn’t known only for that fact. Genghis Khan also fathered several children. Research in a 2003 historical genetics paper found that he fathered so many offspring that about 16 million people today are his direct progenies. So cheer up! Thanks to the information given by this stupid fact, you just might be related to Genghis Khan!
11. The cheesiest pizza ever created had as many as 154 varieties of cheese put together!
In the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, Donatello’s character claimed that a 99-cheese pizza would be a “culinary impossibility.” Inspired by this statement, Johnny Di Francesco of Melbourne Australia set out to break the Guinness World Record for the cheesiest pizza. In his 400 Gradu restaurant in Melbourne, Di Francesco created a pizza using 99 kinds of cheese.
After that pizza took off, we wanted to outdo himself. He told the Guinness World Records that after the overwhelming response from his costumers, he decided to up the limit and create a 154-cheese pizza. His customers went so far as to petition to have it as a permanent menu item.
Thus, the current Guinness World Record for the cheesiest pizza has been set by Johnny Di Francesco, with a pizza of 154 different types of cheese. Sorry, Donatello, your culinary impossibility theory has been debunked!
12. Shaped like a dog bone, there is a metallic asteroid named “Kleopatra.”
Space is full of several wonders, beautiful and deadly. Among them, lies the asteroid of “Kleopatra.” No, not the Egyptian Queen. “Kleopatra” is a minor metallic planet. It has two moons of its own, Alexhelios and Cleoselene. But that’s not the only stupid fact about this asteroid.
No, that would be the fact that “Kleopatra” is shaped similarly like a dog bone.
13. Cow’s of Queen Elizabeth II sleep on waterbeds.
Queen Elizabeth II and all those around her, enjoy a luxurious life. Not just them, even her cows! The manager of the royal farm, Mark Osman, has said that the 165 cows of the Queen spend most of their day sleeping and relaxing on their waterbeds. As the cow would lie down, the water pushes against the pressure points underneath where the cows lie. Thus, the cows end up floating. Due to this stupid fact, now we know how lucky the Royal cows are.
14. A British kid legally changed his name to “Captain Fantastic Faster Than Superman Spiderman Batman Wolverine Hulk And The Flash Combined.”
Do you think you’re the biggest fan on the planet for superheroes? If you do, think again. In 2008, George Garratt, then 19 years old, legally changed his name to this super long signature. Then, it was believed to be the longest name in the world.
He decided upon the theme of superheroes and then just went for it. This kid just made it on this list of stupid facts by changing his name alone. Unfortunately, this name change also led to his grandmother not speaking to him anymore.
15. The scientists discovered the fossil of a 430-million-year-old monster.
How many of you love creepy creatures? If you do, you must have heard of Cthulhu, the fictional monster that appeared in H. P. Lovecraft’s tale “The Call of Cthulhu” in 1928. If you love this monster, you’’’ be thrilled to learn that in 2019, scientists discovered a 430-million-year-old fossil with features of tentacles. This fossil reminded them of the Cthulhu. According to research published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, this brand new discovered fossil was named Solla Sina Cthulhu.
