Butter is a widely used ingredient in cooking and is savored by people as it enhances the taste of the food.  Butter enhances the taste of other condiments when used on a portion of cooked food. But it has been vying in some people’s heads to put butter as a condiment or an ingredient.  Let’s first understand what condiments mean.

1. What are Condiments?

When you prepare any meal and don’t like to eat it simply, ever feel like garnishing it or adding taste to it for your taste buds? This is what condiments mean.  Condiments are taste enhancer substances that are added after the food has been cooked to intensify the sense of flavor.

It is like adding salt to a meal to adjust the flavor according to your taste. Considering everything, on the whole condiments are the flavor enhancer.

Anything that can be eaten simply and does not require any companion for enhancing taste. However, it only depends on the taste of people, if they want to add anything to enhance flavor or just simply eat it. Some choose to add butter as a topping to popcorn while some do not. It all depends on taste.

1.1. Is Butter a Condiment? 

Butter is a dairy product that comes from milk and cream. This can become a healthy part of the diet and can be consumed daily in a minimal quantity. Butter is a rich source of vitamins A, D, E, and calcium. Vitamin E is good for healthy skin and strengthens the immune system. Vitamin A is better for vision and Vitamin D regulates phosphorus and calcium amounts. Butter is a fantastic source of fat. But, as it contains a higher amount of fat, the consumption must be limited. 

It is highly debatable among many, whether to put butter in an ingredient or a condiment category.  Butter is used as an ingredient in cooking, and it is more common in Indian households. However, the use of butter is also found to enhance the taste.

As butter is used on Baked sandwiches and offered with toast, it can be considered as a condiment. Also, butter is commonly used in other baked foods like scones and muffins. In Indian cuisine, butter (ghee) is added to roti which is a day-to-day meal. It can be added to cooked vegetables which will melt down with heat and add flavor to it. 

Just like salt and pepper, butter is also a condiment. It only depends on how it is getting consumed.  Salt is also an ingredient that is used while cooking, but also can be added to a portion of food after it has been served. In the same way, butter is also added as an ingredient in cooking and used on cooked food to enhance taste.

2. Other Food Items as Condiments 

As it is discussed condiments are food stuffs that are added to a prepared food to enhance flavor. Many other food items are on the list of condiments and are consumed by people in this form.

2.1. Mustard

Mustard is considered as one of the oldest and most traditional condiments made from mustard seeds. It can be used as a dipper, on sandwiches, vegetables, or hamburgers. 

2.2. Ketchup

Ketchup is the best table condiment used with many food items to enhance flavor. Ketchup can become the best condiment to add on taste in foods like potato fries, potato chips, grilled cheese sandwiches, onion rings, and pizza. 

2.3. Hot Sauce

Hot sauce made from chili peppers gives a good spicy taste to foods like burgers, burritos, or other dishes. It is considered as the best condiment if someone wants to add a spicy taste to their meal.  

2.4. Vinegar

Vinegar is a sour and slightly acidic liquid used as a condiment like in salad dressing to add flavor. It is also used as a preservative in pickles as well.

2.5. Salt

The commonly used ingredient, salt, is added to a cooked meal as a taste enhancer to adjust the flavor accordingly. 

2.6. Mayonnaise

The widespread use of mayonnaise, like spreading it on a sandwich or using it as a dipper for momos, is the most utilized condiment in the United States.  

2.7. Chutneys

Chutneys are an Indian household food item that is used as a condiment. The green and red chutneys enhance the taste of every meal.

2.8. Pickles

The sweet and sour taste of a variety of pickles is used as condiments with many food items and is best to give a kick to foods.

3. Is Peanut Butter a Condiment?

Anything that adds flavor to the food items is a condiment. Peanut butter is made from peanuts, oil, sugar, and salt. It can be used as a spread on sandwiches, baked slices of bread, or with vegetables and fruits.

Since it also adds flavor to the food, it can be considered as a condiment. Also, all the nut kinds of butter can be considered condiments.

4. Final Words

Various dishes, such as sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, hamburgers, hot sauce, and salads, might benefit from the flavoring effects of condiments. Additionally, they can be used as a dipping sauce for bread or veggies. Some condiments can improve food’s flavor while also adding nutritional value.
