Belle forgoes her freedom for her father’s
Belle isn’t some helpless damsel in pain who needs other people to liberate her. No, she is the one freeing other people. Not only is she a kind human being, but she also displays incredible courage in the face of peril, has an attitude toward what is right, and helps those she loves in a way she can. If that isn’t a prime example of the kick-ass female character with attractive control of her destiny, then I don’t know what it is. Go, Belle!
The first time we had unprofessional eyes upon the Library of Dreams
While the Disney flick ramped up the romance of Beast’s castle much, the original fairy tale also has a library featured within it – in addition, it’s equally impressive. By the means of a bookish child, seeing Belle reading everywhere and then discovering the astounding Library in the castle that seems to go on for miles was uncontaminated magic. Now I’m a 30+-year-old adult, and it’s still one of my life goals to own the library like that one day (besides a castle, too, because why not).

When the Beast lets Belle go
This is the division in which Belle and we, as readers or film viewers, see what was predictable all along: the Beast loves Belle. He’s eager to set her free and risk never being able to break the curse because Belle is distressed about her household, and he wants her to be happy. It’s upsetting to see her leave the castle as the departure could be permanent, and the consequences for the Beast are considerable. As a child, the first time I adage this scene, I feared that that was the end intended for the two of them (though it was only the beginning).
The swoon moment where they animate happily ever after
What is a fairy tale short of that one moment that makes your heart flutter when animals sing? In the Disney adaptation, it’s the scene where the last rose petal falls unhappy, and Belle weeps over Beast’s body until he – magically – comes back to life and formerly transforms into the handsome prince he was under the furry external all along. In the book, it’s when the Beast proposes that Belle accept, still not alert to the fact that this means her hairy hubby-to-be will slightly literally shed the curse.
