1. Horses Sleep Standing Up
A horse locks its knees and falls asleep standing up, this is called the stay apparatus that allows the horse to nap. The horse does not get complete REM (Rapid eye movement) sleep while standing up.
The horses are constantly aware of the environment and are alert to predator threats. They lie down for complete REM sleep when they are in education of no threat.

When the horses sleep in the wild it is risky to sleep alone, a horse has to be aware of the environment. The horse gets a satisfactory sleep when the mare and additional horses are present and watch for predators attacks when they sleep. In a herd, the horses sleep by taking turns. Growing up, a horse needs essential food and rest to thrive. Young horses and foals need more sleep than adults for proper physical and mental growth. Foals sleep for half of the time until they are three months old.
An adult horse needs a maximum of 3 hours of sleep to complete its REM sleep requirement when lying down. The young horses sleep for longer hours lying down.

Sleep deficiency is caused due to REM sleep deficiency. Horses get cranky when they do not get good sleep. The horse can go to deep sleep while standing up and collapse while in a state of sleep.
It is observed that an alone horse is more sleep-deprived than a horse that is in the herd. An unsuitable environment and physical discomfort also cause sleep deficiency. Good sleep and a comfortable environment to sleep may help a horse recover from sleep deficiency.

10. How Do You Know When A Horse Is Sleeping?
You may know when a horse is asleep by noticing its posture.
When a horse is sleeping while standing up, it relaxes its weight on its front legs and one hind leg. When the horse is lying down on the ground, it stretches flat. One hind leg is somewhat accessible, its neck goes back into its natural position dangling freely, its eye is closed, and the ears are relieved of tension. Its mouth may be open or closed, slow breathing through its nostrils.
11. Should Horses Sleep In The Stables?
A stable allows a horse with a thin coat to experience cold temperatures more sparingly. Horses are safe and comfortable at night in the stable.
Poor weather and muddy field could cause a horse to slip and can hurt it, horses enjoy staying outdoor, but they can relax more in stables.
