It is a common problem with all of us that once we’ve lived with a piece of furniture for four-five years there is a sudden urge to change it. There can be all sorts of issues like “This is not trendy now “, ” it doesn’t match the other things in my room now “, and ” I’m getting some paint done so might as well change the furniture“. The possibilities are quite a few.
But the problem is that if you buy new furniture every time you don’t feel that it adds up to your space as it leads to a lot of expenditure, plus what to do with the old one?
I have also been victimized by the same problem and more so because I have a weird habit of redecorating my house every once in a while, so after three years I start feeling that something needs to change, and then one thing leads to another.
So, some days back while I was scrolling Instagram to look at ways to redesign my living room I came across a very new concept: pocket-friendly and environment-friendly upcycling.
There are people out there upcycling furniture in a manner that the old does not go to waste, and after the transformation, you will not even realize that it is the same piece of chair that you despise with all your heart.
So, let me break it down for you. Suppose you bought a chest of drawers made of good quality wood, very expensive and reliable. But as a few years passed by, it became old, greasy, and lost its glow. And now you feel like a change is needed. So, what actually can be done is this

The basic requirements would be sanding and re-painting. So, try to detach parts and place them separately so that all of them can be sanded. As soon as this process is done, the wood will peak out to give a very new and beautiful shade.
You can either prepare it by using a top coat and changing the knobs to upgrade the look; if not then you can re-paint with a new color matching to your present room setting and completely elevate the look.
Usually storage units like these are what bring monotony and can actually be upcycled in this fashion, more permanent and bigger furniture pieces would actually require a lot of professional help to redo them.

Along with this process, as an addition, you can also change the tapestry on the top shelf, or add a little object to grab attention and change the mood.
So, what I did was very similar to the ideas that you have read so far. In my living room, I had a chest of drawers for storage purposes but it was old and dainty, so to add a modern touch I rearranged the shelf settings and then after sanding and repainting; assembled it into a completely new look.
Not only my entire space looked newer, but also due to height addition on that piece, it added more space in the whole room view. I think it is one of the best ways to make use of your old worthy furniture and turn them into useful new pieces of aesthetic appeal.
