Want to speak in public? Nervous? No! Well, then you are braver than me. However, now I’m fine with public speaking but there was a time when I used to get nervous during speaking in public.

Most of the time, I didn’t attend events that require speak in public. But, somewhere even though I didn’t like it, due to nervousness, I often felt, something was missing. And yes! that was public speaking. The fear of public speaking kept me away from various joyful and educational events. And it annoyed me a lot.

So, I decided to overcome my fear, and all thanks to the people on Reddit, whose suggestions and tips helped me a lot, to overcome my fear.

Like how I could make eye contact – a couple of seconds at a time.

I tried practicing making eye contact with people one by one with my friends and family.

Though it wasn’t enough to make me fully confident, at least it made me try public speaking and I started to join public gatherings. Before this, public gatherings were the most horrible things for me and I used to shiver around many people. Directly, you could address me as an introvert.

The best thing I learnt?

I should not let people make me uncomfortable with their expressions and eye contact. I am the owner of my thoughts, only I have the right to take control of myself.

The pro tip I got? You have to feel in control of a conversation if you want to feel confident.

Preparing and practicing can help you build your confidence –

as sometimes you also fear things that you aren’t prepared for or haven’t heard of.

However, public speaking isn’t about one category of person, this fear can exist in any person irrespective of whether you are a student or a working professional. Then what’s the catch here? The catch is understanding the difference between these two phases of a person’s life.

A student gets many opportunities to overcome their “speak in public” fear whereas a working professional doesn’t get time to do this as they have to do it every day during meetings, public gathering events, and success parties.

And sometimes, as this user says, overpreparing yourself could make you more nervous – so take it as it comes.

The more you prepare the more there are chances to get failed and being nervous, so just know your stuff and prepare a bit about what you need to say.

But, one thing that I have learned for sure from all this is –

People first connect with you and then with your words, so, just deliver your thoughts to them in the simplest language you know, with a belief that whatever you say, the audience will listen, and for me, this is “confidence”.
