Ever find yourself scrolling through mountain pics and daydreaming about crystal-clear lakes, snowy peaks, and wooden cottages? You’re not alone. I used to do the same… until I finally packed my bags and headed to Kashmir. And let me tell you, no Instagram filter can do it justice.

This place? It’s magic. Pure, unfiltered magic. And now that I’ve experienced it for myself, I’m putting together this little guide so you can explore Kashmir with confidence—and maybe fall in love with it like I did.

First Impressions: A Slice of Heaven

As soon as I landed in Srinagar, I felt like I had stepped into a postcard. Everywhere I looked, there were mountains, trees that touched the sky, and people so warm and welcoming, it felt cold. The posts by @visit_kashmir were enough to make me take this dream vacation, and I was not even a bit disappointed.

They call Kashmir “Paradise on Earth” for a reason, and honestly, that’s not just hype. It’s calm, it’s beautiful, and it has this peaceful energy that’s hard to explain until you’re in the middle of it.

Where I Went (And Why You Should, Too)

1. Srinagar

This is where the journey begins for most people—and it’s easy to see why. I stayed in a houseboat on Dal Lake (yes, it’s as dreamy as it sounds), took a shikara ride at sunset, and explored the Mughal gardens like I was in a movie.

Highlights:

  • Houseboat stays (you wake up literally floating)
  • Shikara rides with hot kahwa in hand
  • Stroll through Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh
  • Haggling at local markets

2. Gulmarg

Okay, so if you’ve ever wanted to play in real snow or just pretend you’re in a snow globe, Gulmarg is it. I tried skiing (for the first time!) and although I fell so many times, it was still fun. The Gondola ride? Unreal. You get these views that stay in your mind forever.

Tip: Even if you’re not into skiing, go just for the view. Trust me. This one was my favourite. Kashmir Ski & Snowboarding School offers private ski and snowboard classes for visitors of all levels. Their Instagram videos were enough to inspire me to try this snowy sport.

There’s something so soothing about Pahalgam—like nature is giving you a hug. I took long walks by the Lidder River, drank chai while watching the clouds roll by, and even went horseback riding up to Baisaran, aka “Mini Switzerland.”

4. Sonamarg

If you’re up for a little adventure and a lot of beauty, Sonamarg (the Meadow of Gold) is amazing. I did a short trek here, and the views were just… wow. Snowy mountains, pine forests, quiet trails. It felt untouched and peaceful.

Food I Couldn’t Stop Eating

So. Much. Flavor. Kashmiri cuisine is next-level. It’s rich, hearty, and full of love. I couldn’t get enough of:

  • Rogan Josh – Spicy, tender lamb curry
  • Dum Aloo – Potatoes in a thick, tangy gravy
  • Kahwa – That warm, spiced green tea with almonds? I drank it like water.
  • Modur Pulao – Sweet saffron rice with dry fruits (sounds unusual, tastes amazing)

Also, if someone offers you a Wazwan feast, cancel all plans. It’s a traditional Kashmiri meal with multiple courses—super special and totally worth trying.

What I Packed (and What I Forgot)

Here’s a quick list that might help you avoid the “oops” moments I had:

Must-pack:

  • Layers! The weather changes fast—sunny one minute, chilly the next.
  • Good walking shoes
  • Moisturizer and lip balm (dry air is real)
  • A reusable water bottle (especially helpful when trekking)
  • Power bank (because you’ll take so many photos)

What I forgot: Extra socks. Don’t make my mistake—wet socks are the worst.

A Few Tips

  • Chat with locals—they’re kind, funny, and full of stories.
  • Plan your routes, but leave space for spontaneous moments.
  • Respect the culture—dress modestly and be mindful in sacred spaces.
  • Take it slow. Seriously. This isn’t a place to rush through. The stillness is part of the experience.

Final Thoughts: What Kashmir Taught Me

I thought Kashmir would just be a pretty destination. But being there, breathing that mountain air, and watching life move at its own pace—it changed me.

Kashmir taught me to pause, look around, and really see the beauty around us. And honestly? I’m already planning my next trip back.

So, if you want adventure, peace, culture, and a whole lot of wow, go to Kashmir. You’ll come back with full camera rolls, a full heart, and a new definition of beauty.
