Just recently fatwa’s were passed in Pakistan regarding the right to marriage and property of transgenders and now it is Kochi that is taking the step ahead. Yes my dear friends, Kochi Metro is extending a helping hand towards the transgenders by offering them jobs in customer relations.
Not only Customer relations, but Kochi metro has opened the field of housekeeping and crowd management too for the transgenders. The opportunity will be open as soon as the metro starts next year. According to the government, there are around 25,000 transgenders in the state. Last year Kerala had become the first Indian state to announce a transgender policy.
“This will be the first time a metro rail body will give employment to transgenders, who find it difficult to get absorbed in the mainstream job market. They would not be the KMRL staff, but would be part of the system,’’ said KMRL managing director Elias George. He says that the step is taken considering the social problems faced by the people. This is a small step so as to get the transgenders as mainstream in society.
Unemployment is the main problem faced by the transgenders. There are bout 128 transgenders in Kochi. The initiative will be started off as an experiment and definitely carried forward ahead.
According to Kochi Metro Rail Limited officials, transgenders will be absorbed in the ‘Operation and Maintenance’ activities of the Kochi Metro, with assistance of the Kudumbashree Mission. Meanwhile, Health Minister K K Shylaja said the government was looking into the proposal to set up special toilets for transgenders.
This is a huge step towards helping the transgender community who has been suffering from time immemorial. One step at a time and we sure are moving towards a better society from one direction. Basic acceptance is every individual’s right and we should totally respect the way a person wants to live their life. It is the doings of God. It is how nature works. Let us accept it and give these people the life they deserve. The life that an HUMAN BEING deserves.
