It has been four years since I quit my corporate job and gave myself a chance as a freelance writer. However, the reason behind quitting was also the same: I had seen that many people are working as freelancers nowadays, and I had heard a lot about it. On the other hand, I was also looking to switch my job, so what could be a better choice than this?
I was pretty good at my work, but in the corporate world, appreciation comes with more challenges and work. Except for your close friends, nobody can see you happy and grow, even with your own talent, making the working atmosphere toxic. Now, as a freelancer, I can say that it is much better to do freelancing than working in an unhealthy environment.
Initially, it was a bit difficult for me. I almost took it as a wrong decision because, compared to other freelancers, I was new to this, and clients rarely select a new freelance writer. Instead, they prefer to sign the contract with someone with whom they have previously worked. So, in the beginning, it took time and almost more than a month to get my first project.

From here, my journey started gradually. The first work I did was for $16 per hour, but I learned here that it shouldn’t be about making money in the beginning but growing your network by taking more and more projects, whether small or big and so I followed it. Thankfully, the clients appreciated my first project enough, so it didn’t take much time to get me another project.

Another thing that I learned was that writing wasn’t hard at all. What was difficult was getting clients, but once you get into this, and after getting your first client, the process runs automatically in most cases.
And, then, after going on like this, with the extremely hard work of 4-5 months, the amount of work for me started to increase. These were the starting days where I got to put in a lot of effort every day to get more work. Some of the clients from my corporate network were also part of it, so it didn’t take much time for me to get excellent and promising projects that were even worth $80 -$90, sometimes for an hour and more than this, in urgent cases.

And now I am getting paid $100 for an hour, even without urgency.
Gradually, I started to enjoy it as I made money and was paid for every hour. My favorite part of being a freelancer was the flexibility I gained. I can do the work at my pace if the client has no urgency.
I get to communicate with the clients like an owner, not an employee in someone else’s office. It made me my own boss as I had no upper management pressure to finish the work within sudden or urgent deadlines.

The entire process made me feel like a boss every day. As a freelancer, I didn’t have to ask for holidays; whenever I wanted, I could take them without asking for permission. But one thing is for sure: As a freelancer, it’s important to keep working so your managed network can stay yours always. If you start delaying the work or always remain on holiday, it will affect the quality as well as the quantity of your work.
