Pain is inevitable, suffering is not. Imagine the world without pain. It would be lifeless, to be honest. One cannot feel happiness without experiencing pain. All our lives, we try to avoid pain. Parents try to protect their children; friends try to protect each other. In the end, it’s all futile. Life hands us our share of pain and happiness. It is up to us how we want to deal with them.

Pain can change a person for better or for worse. It depends on the person how they will cope with the situation. While it makes some strong, it can fill others with hate. We see how people who have suffered a lot grow up to be successful or go to the dark side- there is no in between.

That we can feel pain means that we are alive. We are meant to feel pain; that’s how it is supposed to be. With pain, comes empathy. This can help one connect more with people and understand what they are going through. While in pain, human connection is extremely important. Once one succeeds in connecting to another, it gives rise to happiness. Without pain, people would become insensitive and will cease to feel.

Pain gives rise to suffering and that, in turn, gives rise to the urge to get rid of the suffering. This pushes people to become a better version of themselves. Pain is the biggest motivator. Pain makes us see the world in a different light, much different than how we usually perceive the world.

Some believe that feeling pain and showing it is a sign of weakness. People refuse to cry in public; some refuse to cry at all. But then, being in pain makes one strong. Crying is only a way to make things better. Pain is not supposed to be stored inside; that can prove to be dangerous. Being stoic doesn’t help at all. One needs to accept that they are in pain and act on it to make things better.

People these days use several methods to get rid of the pain. Alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, sex- anything that can make them numb. What they do not realize is that by doing so, they are harming themselves. Pain is natural and one should not attempt to stop it by external forces.

Pain can get addicting. One needs to make sure that they do not give in to this urge of being in pain and balance their emotions as much as they can.
