The three day long International Indian Film Academy Awards came to a spectacular end this Saturday at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey where all the Bollywood divas were present under one roof to congratulate the deserving nominations. Also, it was a night of breath taking performances of stars like Salman Khan, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon and others. Varun Dhawan danced to a medley of his father David Dhawan’s songs drawing huge cheers from the crowd. This was also the first time that IIFA awards had been organised in New York City.
Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor won the awards for Best Actors for Udta Punjab. The film, Neerja, on the other hand, was awarded as the Best Film. The award for the Best Story went to Ayesha Devitre Dhillon and Shakun Batra for Kapoor & Sons. Kolkata’s pride Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury took home the award for the Best Director for his film, Pink. Pink was awarded many other titles as well. It won the Best Dialogue and Best Screenplay (Ritesh Shah) and also Best Editing (Bodhaditya Bandyopadhyay). Wizcraft Entertainment, quite interestingly, is about to make their foray into film production by a film based on the award show. It will have Sonakshi Sinha and Diljit Dosanjh in the lead. Parts of the film were shot on the green carpet and also on the stage. Sonakshi stated, “ we just shot a song on stage with this audience of NYC.” Salman Khan is supposed to do a cameo in the film.
Karan Johar and Saif Ali Khan, the hosts, took a dig at the nepotism debate which was sparked by Kangana Ranaut with their continuous chants of “Nepotism rocks, Nepotism rocks”. Saif told Varun Dhawan, “ you are here because of your papa” while Varun replied, “ you are here because of your mummy”. Karan Johar too joined them with, “ I’m here because of my father, Saif is here because of his mother, and Varun is here also because of his father. What’s the big deal?”
With the clock striking twelve, the entire Stadium came alive singing “Happy Birthday” for Katrina Kaif, who stood blushing on stage. This year Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt made their debut at the IIFA Awards.
The grand event came to an end with Nawazuddin Siddiqui talking to the audience about his take on awards shows and stated, “ I don’t believe in awards but it’s good, cause people get motivated to work harder. If you perform only keeping awards in mind, then it’s not good, you get corrupted. You should celebrate awards and then get back to your aukat and start working harder.”
