Here is a delightful conversation with Divya Bhagat on her journey as an artist with Icy Tales.ย
Q. What is the best part about being an art instructor?
Divya Bhagat: The best part of being an art instructor is you meet a lot of people, you explore more, learn something new about your surroundings, about yourself. Every class is different and unique with every new session, and it teaches something new. There is no fixed parameter and pattern. That unpredictability, the newness that admires me and I like about my profession.
Q. You conduct workshops on a lot of different art techniques. Workshops for which of these do you enjoy taking the most?
Divya Bhagat: Every workshop is very close to my heart and unique. I enjoy every workshop that I have conducted. It would be difficult for me to choose one workshop. All the workshops have taught me a lot. I knew what the workshop gave me: to keep pushing yourself and the boundaries to move forward and have personal and professional growth. If one is ready to do things out of the box, you must go ahead.
Q. What has been your most significant achievement to this day?
Divya Bhagat: In my perspective, I am still growing and pushing my boundaries. I still have a long way to go on. I am waiting for the big day to come into my life. I feel there is a lot of opportunities to be coming my way. If I could pin a day that is really special to me is when I sold my first painting, which was my โAha Momentโ.
Q. When does your work get a little challenging?
Divya Bhagat: Every profession has some challenges. Being an art teacher, instructor, and artist requires you to be creative. When I feel like I have been working for quite a long time, I cope by taking breaks. It happens when you are working without having a break, in that I go on a vacation to rejuvenate myself.
The challenge that I face is I am a mother too, and I feel being a mother is as unpredictable as being an artist. The challenge I face every day, I havenโt drawn a boundary between being an artist and being a mother; I am still learning to draw the boundary.
Q. Who has supported you throughout your journey?
Divya Bhagat:ย My biggest support are my sister, who had introduced me to the world of art. We spent all our summer vacations doing drawing, art, painting. Sheโs been my inspiration always. I always look to her and ask for her reviews. My husband has always been my support after my sister.
My sister introduced me to the art world, but my husband supported me to move e forward. I left my job to pursue art as a career; he believed in me. When I was questioning myself, he continued to believe in me. These two people are like my major support system.
Q. What artists are your sources of inspiration?
Divya Bhagat: Well, I get inspired by various artist and their work. The artists post impressive work on social media. Some artists are well known, they are outstanding personalities, but their masterpiece might not resonate with you. I prefer to take inspiration from the art of the artist.
You donโt feel the connection. There are a lot of amazing artists out there whom I look up to, save their masterpiece, and dream that one day I may be able to create such a masterpiece one day. Anyone can be your inspiration. In my opinion, a person who follows their dream is an inspiration for me.
Q. What message do you have for aspiring artists who are trying to make it big or just starting to experiment with it?
Divya Bhagat: In todayโs time, where social media is an essential platform where artist showcase their work, I have noticed that artists are constantly under pressure to come up with something creative. There is a thin difference between creating content and creating art.
When we are on social media, we tend to forget the primary purpose of being there. We are using the platform whether we are using the platform for creating or showcasing our art or merely just the content. I want the aspiring artists to be sure or have clarity of why they are using the platform and the purpose? What is the motive behind it? Be specific about what you want and donโt want.
Q. What memorable responses have you had to your work?
Divya Bhagat: I had a memorable response when someone appreciated my work. We, as an artist, work hard and put a lot of effort into making a simple piece of art. Whether a student, a stranger, and my family appreciate or give constructive feedback, that is one way to grow. There are times when I cannot observe whatโs wrong or what is lacking in my art, while others do. Thatโs what I look forward to.
