Increasingly common, foot fetishes are a type of sexual fetishism that involves an individual becoming sexually aroused by feet or footwear. Studies show that more than 50% of all fetishes are related to feet. Depending on the individual, this type of fetish can range from mild to extreme. People with a foot fetish may enjoy massaging, kissing, licking, or smelling feet. They may also enjoy looking at pictures or videos of feet. In some cases, they may even become aroused by simply thinking about feet.

Fetish vs. Kink

However, not every individual that fantasizes about feet can be said to have a foot fetish. A passing interest in shoes, stockings, or feet can sometimes be equated to a kink instead of a fetish. By definition, a kink is an umbrella term for alternative sexual activities. This phrase represents deviations from the conventional sexual model.

A kink can be used to describe preferences and practices people practice to enhance their sexual experiences. An individual may develop a kink that will help make their encounters more enjoyable. However, these activities/interests are included atop the conventional sexual routines. A person with a kink does not have to indulge in a particular interest to achieve sexual completion.

In contrast, a fetish refers to a long-term fixation on objects or practices or body parts. For example, a foot fetish refers to a voracious appetite for anything foot-related. Unlike with kinks, a person with a focus may not experience sexual pleasure if they do not indulge in a specific activity.  For people with foot fetishes, touching, smelling, and looking at feet is essential to achieve sexual completion.

Prevalence of Foot Fetishes

Foot fetishes are one of the most common fetishes, although the exact rate is unknown. A survey of 1,040 people found that 10.2% of men and 4.6% of women reported having a foot fetish. However, this survey only included people who were willing to admit to having a foot fetish, so the actual prevalence may be higher. The study also found that people with a foot fetish were more likely to be single, have a higher education level, and be of a younger age.

Additionally, more men than women admitted to having a fixation on feet. The number of males admitting to a foot fetish was more than 9 times that of women. Social norms, gender roles, and other factors affect how open people are willing to be about this fetish.

Studies show that foot fetishes in the US are more mainstream than ever. America ranks first on the list of countries with the most foot fetishes. At least 14% of the US population has experienced some form of foot-based attraction in their lifetime. Other counties with high rates of this kink include Italy and Germany.

As highly sex-positive societies, the culture in these places is very open to sexual exploration. These places give individuals the space to explore their preferences. The relative sexual freedom could be the reason why these countries rate high on the list of places with foot fetishes.

Causes of Foot Fetishes

The exact cause of foot fetishes is unknown, but there are several potential explanations. One theory is that people with a foot fetish may have had a positive experience with feet in the past, such as receiving a foot massage or having their feet touched in a pleasurable way. Freud even formulates that children develop a fixation for feet during early childhood. According to this theory, children during this phase imprint actions like fondling and caressing of the feet in memory.

Experiences like these could create positive reinforcement, especially if they also involve genital stimulation. Such an instance is highly probable because the pleasure annex (connected to the genitals) and the region processing feet-based responses lie adjacent to each other in the human brain. Established by Wilder Penfield in the 1950s, this theory of the “body image map” could explain why foot fetishes are common in people.

Research on Foot Fetishes

Harvard University researchers examined the relationship between foot fetishes and personality traits. The researchers found that those with a foot fetish were more likely to have higher levels of openness to experience and lower levels of neuroticism. Meanwhile, Cambridge University also conducted several studies on the neurological basis of foot fetishes. One study found that those with a foot fetish had increased activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, which is associated with reward processing. This suggests that the sight or touch of feet triggers a reward response in the brain.

This study backs the psychoanalytical theory that this fetish emerges during the pre-adolescent phase. Young children are conditioned/imprinted by their parent’s behavior and see the fondling/caressing of their feet as a form of “rewarding.” This research also backs the idea that foot fetishes are developed over time. Instead of claiming that people are born with these preferences, it is more correct to state that this fixation is a learned behavior.

Researchers have conducted several studies on the psychological basis of foot fetishes. One study found that those with a foot fetish were more likely to have higher levels of attachment anxiety. This suggests that those with a foot fetish may be seeking a sense of security and comfort through the sight or touch of feet.

In the formative years, children and teenagers may undergo impactful events that create this positive reinforcement in favor of foot-based stimulation. Even early sexual experiences like the stimulation of the genitals using feet can have a lasting impact on the individual’s preferences. The person experiencing this may develop a life-long fondness for feet because of this one memory.

Today, you’ve several websites like FeetFinder where you can go and sell feet pics online and make money – a niche that caters to a growing fetish.

Foot fetishes are a form of sexual fetishism that involves an individual becoming aroused by the sight or touch of feet. The exact cause of foot fetishes is not known, but research can provide insight into the neurological and psychological basis of foot fetishes.
