Imagine this scenario: It’s your school’s annual result day, and everyone is expectantly waiting for the headmaster to announce the name of the student who topped the academics this year. And, your name is announced (you didn’t see it coming!). You get up from the seat in utter surprise and head towards the stage to receive the award. When you climb the stairs, another announcement is made from the podium that there has been a mistake. You realize you are not the topper, and your rival is… (YIKES!!)
How would that feel, huh?
Well, Miss Colombia must have felt the same way when a pretty similar incident happened with her at the Miss Universe 2015 finale.
Miss Universe is an annual international beauty pageant run by the Miss Universe Organization and is the world’s most publicized beauty contest. This year’s MISS UNIVERSE Pageant was aired LIVE on Sunday, December 20th on FOX and Zcafe.
People around the globe were watching this pageant live on their TV sets when Miss Colombia was named the Miss Universe 2015. Miss Columbia Ariadna Gutierrez was crowned as the winner and given flowers by the former Miss Universe Paulina Vega. She was reveling at the moment, throwing flying kisses at the audience. But her happiness soon turned to tears when they stripped her of her crown, and then they placed it on Miss Philippines’ head. The never-seen-before ending to this prestigious beauty contest was caused due to a little reading mistake made by the host of the evening Steve Harvey. Harvey misread his card during the announcement of the Miss Universe finale. After ninety seconds of crowning Miss Colombia as the Miss Universe, he apologized for his mistake. He said that she is the first runner-up, and Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines. (Ouch!)
Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez was very upset about this incident as it all happened on LIVE TV. She unwillingly looked at the crown (which was on her head for almost 1.5 minutes) taken away to Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. A-W-K-W-A-R-D!

The host, Steve Harvey, has also posted a public apology on Twitter. But he couldn’t do that either without making a mistake. Here’s the tweet he posted: He wrote Philippians in place of the Philippines and Columbia instead of Colombia.
Miss Universe Organisation has also posted an apology on Facebook for the human error. “Our sincerest apologies to Miss Universe Colombia, Miss Universe Philippines, their families, and fans. We congratulate Miss Universe Philippines as Miss Universe 2015.”
The stunned Miss Universe Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach quoted, “The road to the Miss Universe crown is never easy,” while Miss Colombia said, “Everything happens for a reason … I’m so happy, thank you for voting for me”, wiping her tears.
Obviously, it wouldn’t have hurt her and the people of Colombia as much if the mistake had not happened. But let’s look at the brighter side; at least, she got to feel like a Miss Universe for 90 seconds.
