Q) Can you tell the readers something more about yourself and your journey so far?
Rishab Dubey: I have a background in the IT industry. I began making videos in 2020, which were primarily comedic. Some people werenโt too sure about them, but one of my friends, whoโs a popular YouTuber, encouraged me. Thatโs how I started posting on YouTube. Aside from this, I have a family which includes my younger brother, my parents, and including me, we are a team of five.
In the beginning, I wasnโt sure about presenting myself. The main person who pushed me and guided me was my brother, Akash Dubey. While I didnโt have any acting experience, he stepped in to help. We create videos as a team. Every night, around 10 or 11, we brainstorm and discuss content ideas, focusing on humor.
Itโs a collaborative effort. From the beginning, Akash has been involved. At first, he said heโd assist, but as time went on, he became even more passionate than I was. We always discuss and refine our content, aiming for the best comedic results.
Q) How did you come up with the name โMBA Guyโ and does it have a special story behind it?
Rishab Dubey: The name โMBA Guyโ was something I had been contemplating for a while, thinking about whether it would be a good fit or not. Eventually, my girlfriend, whoโs now my fiancรฉe, suggested โMBA Guyโ saying it was unique.
A school friend even made an edited version of the name for me, which I now use in my videos. Additionally, we made a unique representation of the name at home, using just two lines of the name. Alongside this, I have several trophies as Iโm a state-level kabaddi player. Itโs a testament to never giving up.
Q) Can you walk us through your process of coming up with ideas for your reels? Is it spontaneous or do you plan it out?
Rishab Dubey:ย When creating reels, our initial attempts mimicked existing content, yielding little attention. Later, we pivoted to relatable scenarios, like my prolonged train stop at Kalyan station, which unexpectedly went viral.
Another hit was my tiring return from my office. Now, our focus is on turning daily experiences into humorous, relatable content. For aspiring reel-makers: spotlight everyday situations with a unique, comedic lens.
Q) Whatโs the luckiest thing thatโs ever happened to you?ย
Rishab Dubey: Well, itโs having a supportive family. During the lockdown, we were at home and had the opportunity to shoot videos. While I could film for my friend and he could for me, when we both needed to be on screen, we faced a challenge, when we didnโt have a tripod then. Thatโs when our dad stepped in as our cameraman.
Initially, we were hesitant, thinking, โHow will Dad manage the shoot?โ Especially since there were topics we generally didnโt discuss with him. But as time went on, we became more comfortable. He was incredibly cool and understanding, and our mom was equally supportive. That support is truly the luckiest aspect of my journey.
Q) Which one of your Instagram reels is your absolute favorite, and why?
Rishab Dubey: My all-time favorite Instagram reel has to be the one with the Serbian lady dancing. That one stands out because everyone โ from my office colleagues to my friends โ loved it and deemed it โthe real deal.โ The story behind it is quite interesting. It was around 2 a.m., and our parents were away visiting the village, so my friend and I, along with a couple of other friends, thought, โLetโs create something.โ
As we brainstormed, the idea of the Serbian lady dancing came up. We ended up making three different videos that night. He posted one, and I posted another. The one with the Serbian lady got the most views and had a comedic touch, making it a hit.
Interestingly, the reelโs success led to a colleague at my office, asking me, if I would ever think of quitting my job given the traction I was getting on my reels. I laughed it off, explaining that creating reels was more of a hobby for me. Though initially, it was something we did once in a while, now itโs become frequent. Weโre constantly sharing new ideas and thinking about the next reel to create. Itโs more than just a hobby now.
Q) Have you ever faced any challenges or backlash because of your content? How do you handle it?
Rishab Dubey: Undoubtedly, my content creation journey had its fair share of obstacles. Early on, external filming and limited equipment, like lacking a professional camera, were significant barriers. As we progressed, we upgraded our gear, investing in iPhones and cameras. The post-lockdown period posed another challenge.
Initially, our team, including Akash, Ashish, and Keshav, collaborated seamlessly, producing numerous clips. Yet, as life resumed its pre-pandemic pace, team members returned to their regular jobs, dispersing our once cohesive unit.
This disruption briefly slowed our production. Nevertheless, we adapted, with me taking a more hands-on role in both shooting and production. Facing challenges is inevitable, but overcoming them defines our journeyโs true essence.
Q) Whatโs the most memorable reaction or comment youโve received from a follower on one of your videos?
Rishab Dubey: One of the most memorable reactions Iโve received was tied to the video about the Serbian lady, which was filmed near my school. After posting it, several students from that school started commenting, praising the video, and inviting us to come and shoot inside the school. One comment in particular stood out.
A young student from the school messaged saying, โHello, Iโm in the 10th grade. Please come to our school and shoot a video.โ He even specified that heโd be in school on Monday and invited us to come then so we could film inside the school. That level of enthusiasm and support was truly heartwarming.
Q) If you could collaborate with any other content creator, who would it be and why?
Rishab Dubey: If allowed to collaborate with any content creator, I would choose my friend, who goes by the name Thugesh on YouTube. He has successfully amassed a following of over five million subscribers. Weโve known each other for around seven to eight years, and while he might be very popular now, Iโve been following his work since he had around 50k to 80k subscribers.
Our bond is quite deep, and heโs like family to me. Even after not speaking for a couple of years, the moment we reconnected, it felt like old times. Though heโs incredibly busy, I would be thrilled to work on a video with him.
A potential topic for our collaboration could be the unique challenges tall people face in everyday life โ given that Iโm 6โ1โณ, heโs around 6โ2โ or 6โ3โณ, and my younger brother is also around 6 feet tall.ย
Q) Where do you see your content creation journey heading in the next few years? Do you have any big projects or dreams in the pipeline?
Rishab Dubey: Our vision is to collaborate with like-minded YouTubers, aiming primarily to spread joy. While aiming for growth, we are cautious about the contentโs impact, ensuring itโs both relatable and positive. Regardless of our platformโs size, we believe in responsible content creation. In the future, we plan to consistently produce content that resonates with our viewers, prioritizing their happiness and understanding.
Q) Do you have any further advice for upcoming content creators?
Rishab Dubey: For budding content creators, remember: that consistency and patience are key. I began with modeling and saw the value of regular posting and effective hashtag use. While not every piece you create will go viral, persistence eventually broadens your audience.
It took numerous videos with modest views for me before I had a breakout moment. My friend, YouTuber Thugesh, once told me when I felt down about low views: โKeep producing, and the viral moment will come.โ Just a couple of viral hits can be game-changing.
Rishab Dubeyโs story unfolds as a beacon in the fast-paced and ever-evolving digital content landscape. With an innate blend of authenticity, relatability, and humor, he has meticulously carved out a distinctive space in the hearts of his many followers.
Beyond the glitz and glamour that the world of content creation often portrays, Dubeyโs journey is grounded in genuine passion and dedication. His narrative is a rich tapestry of challenges faced, triumphs celebrated, and lessons learned.
As the digital domain continues its unprecedented expansion, Rishab serves as a poignant reminder that, at the heart of this universe, lies the essence of human connection, the value of unwavering persistence, and the magical allure of everyday moments captured and shared.
