There was a Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai reunion at Satish Shah’s place, recently and producer JD Majethia posted a snap of the same with a caption, “Sarabhai family at Satishji ‘s place…. Some good news for fans on its way.” And the good news is surely here! The producer mentioned that they are planning to come back with something for the digital platform as the team feels they need to do something together again.
The photograph made us all eagerly await for a new season of our favorite show with its quirky characters and the day to day funny situations they go through. A show about a family and show that never fails to make us laugh. It is about a rich Sarabhai family where Maya and Indravardhan Sarabhai live in a flat with their son, Rosesh Sarabhai. Opposite their flat live their older son Sahil Sarabhai with his “middle class” wife, Monisha.
The reunion snap has us reminiscing the old episodes and eagerly await for its return. Let us take a look at our favorite characters and a few quotes and qualities that make us love them!
Maya Sarabhai
Maya is the lady of the house. Elegant, classy and a perfectionist is the best way to describe this woman. She loves her family but keeps hurling insults at her daughter-in-law(Monisha) calling her “middle class” and questioning her choices saying,” Don’t mind beta” at the end of it. She does her best to make her husband live a healthy lifestyle and pampers her younger son to no end. The role is played by Ratna Pathak Shah and brings about a laugh riot due to her character’s hypocritical, sophisticated and sarcastic dialogues and portrayal.
Famous lines-
“Monisha, say ‘Raise a toast’, ‘cheers karein’ is so hindi film party scene”
“Congratulations Monisha, Champagne kholey ya jaljeera se kaam chalega?”
Indravardhan Sarabhai
Played by Satish Shah, Indravardhan, who is fondly called Indu, is Maya’s husband. Though all the power lies in the hands of his wife, this man is the man of the house. He is mischevious, a prankster and makes us love him for his sense of humor.
Famous lines-
Indu- “ Arrey wah! Cake ban raha hai! Kis khushi mein?”
Mya-“ aaj mera janamdin hai”
Indu-“ Baat mat badlo, maine pucha kis khushi mein!”
Monisha Sarabhai
This middle-class Monisha is married to Sahil who is Maya and Indu’s older son. She constantly struggles to make her mother in law, Maya happy. She loves bargaining and embarrasses Maya with her middle-class ways. But, her unapologetic nature and “middle class” ways make us adore her.
Famous lines-
Monisha- “wo Sahil waapa aa jaye na, isiliye maine istiyaar chapwaya hai newspaper main”
Maya-“ Tamil newspaper main?”
Monisha- “ Ha, wo English newspaper ke daam main ye log 4 din ad post karne waale hai”
Sahil Sarabhai
Stuck in the middle of the crazy family is The older son, Sahil. Monisha’s husband and a dearly loved son, he is always caught between the mother and daughter in law with his father adding fuel to the fire. He has a great sense of humor as well.
Famous lines-
While playing Scrabble-
Monisha-“ Mera word ban gaya! D-H-A-D-K-A-N, point likho!”
Sahil- “ye kya? Dhadkan ?”
Monisha- “Haan Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty aur Sunil Kumar waali Dhadkan”
Sahil- “Hum log scrabble kyun khelte hai is ghar main, yahi samajh nahi aata”
Rosesh Sarabhai
Played by Rajesh Kumar, Rosesh is a typical Momma’s boy. His poems makes one want to laugh and cry at the same time. He is constantly pampered by Maya and the one whom Indu and Sahil aim most jokes at.
Famous line-
“Momma ka purse, jaise hospital ki pyaari koi nurse
Purse mein rakha tissue paper karta hai paseene ka ilaaj
Aur lipstick ho jaise, bhooke hotho ka anaj
Momma ke purse ka hai makhmali sa sparsh
Momma ka purse, momma ka purse”
These are the main characters but we occasionally also saw The tech savvy son in law, Dushyant, Madhusudhan fufa and the not so innocent maid, Sunehri.
