Review of Steve Jobs Stanford Speech
1. Connecting the Dots
Steve Jobs believed that his decision to drop out of college and learn calligraphy made Apple a different technology. After he dropped out of REEDS, he had no idea what he wanted to do.
For the sake of learning something fresh, he decided to learn calligraphy. He never imagined that this skill would help him so much then. He believes that his calligraphy skills helped him design the worldโs most beautiful computer Macintosh, just one of the things he discussed in the โSteve Jobs Stanford speech.
The typography in the Macintosh is the factor that differentiates Apple computers from all the other computers. He gives the life lesson that you can never connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them when looking backward. One must focus on all the things they must do and believe that the dots will connect in the future. He believed that this trust, destiny, and gut feeling โ whatever you may call it โ had never let him down. It was what made all the difference in his life.
2. Love and Loss
Probably the best of the three life lessons he talked about. Nobody can differ because you must find your passion as soon as possible. Steve Jobs says that he was lucky to find his love at the early age of 20. When he was 20, he started Apple in a garage with Steve Wozniak. This helped him in restricting his domain and entirely focusing on it.
Apple later turned into a billion-dollar company with over 4,000 employees. This was all because he found his love early in his life. But thatโs not the end. How his love helped him in life comes next.
At 30, Steve Jobs was fired from his own company. Quite unbelievable. The reason? The Board of Directors wanted him out of the company. But you cannot defeat the man who knows his passion. After getting fired, he launched a company named NEXT and PIXAR. Pixar created the worldโs first computer-animated film namedย Toy Story, and today it is the most successful animation studio in the world. Itโs one of the things mentioned in the Steve Jobs Stanford speech.
Today, NEXT is the heart of Appleโs renaissance. Apple purchased NEXT, and Steve Jobs got a call back to his own company. Had he not been fired from Apple; he would have never formed NEXT.
Without NEXT, Apple would not have reached its peak. He says that life will hit you with a brick, but you must keep doing what you love because that will pave your path to a bright future. Since work will acquire a large part of your life, itโs essential to find out what you love. Indeed, Steve Jobs Stanford speech sheds light on many simple yet important things.
3. His Opinion on Death
Death is immortal. It will come knocking on all of our doors. Steve Jobs was diagnosed with a tumor in his pancreas, which doctors believed was not curable. He was advised to be prepared for death.
However, on subsequent diagnosis, doctors found out that minor cancer was utterly curable with surgery. After the surgery, he was hale and hearty.
Steve Jobs Stanford speech mentioned that your time on this planet is limited, so you need to stop wasting it by living someone elseโs life.
Stop believing in othersโ opinions because it annihilates your mental confidence. The essential things in life are to follow your heart and intuition. Once you find it out, everything else in your life will become secondary, as the Steve Jobs Stanford speech says.
Steve Jobsโ speeches are very inspiring to listen to.
To quote one part of Steve Jobsโ Speech,
โHereโs to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holesโฆ the ones who see things differently โ theyโre not fond of rulesโฆ You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. Still, the only thing you canโt do is ignore them because they change thingsโฆ they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.โ
If that doesnโt hit you with the motivation you need, what else could?
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.
