We talked to Rohan, an Icy Tales reader who is an English Major at a college in Delhi. Here is what he says about discovering new authors – and how we can find great books to read.
“This exploration journey of reading becomes limited when you set boundaries and this is what hinders your journey from finding classic reads as well as new authors. So, below I’m sharing a few tips that can help you discover new authors, and it really works.”
1. Be open-minded
Being an open-minded person will allow you to explore every type of book based on different genres and this is how you can also find new authors. Limiting yourself to merely one or two genres of reading does not let you find something new and you just revolve in the repetitive books. Many people read books twice or thrice but do not opt for a new book, this mindset sets boundaries for you, so you can’t allow yourself to break the boundaries and step into the world of exploration.
2. Come out of your comfort zone
A reader’s comfort zone is its mindset and the way of their reading. For example, you like reading sci-fi books and do not allow yourself to read something new or try out a new genre. One of the reasons to do this is also because any book you read requires your time investment not to get the true meaning behind every line. So, if you are too used to understanding sci-fi phrases, it becomes hard for you to indulge yourself in a new genre because its writing will be far different. Leaving your comfort zone allows you to inspect different genres and know about the new reads of new authors.
3. Search for it
When you don’t know, how to discover a new author or an author’s new book, the first thing you can do is to search it on Google. For example, your searches can resemble something like “famous fantasy authors”, “books like ….” or even “authors like ….”. By doing multiple types of searches you’ll surely find an epic read and a new author as well.
4. Scroll through social media
Another thing you can do to discover new authors is to scroll through different social media platforms and look for people’s recommendations about new books and authors. Many people are fond of reading and they post about their favorite authors and read what they like about them and why should go for it. So, I guess it’s an easier way to find new authors. However, don’t limit yourself and definitely give a try to people’s recommendations. Perhaps, you’ll find a hidden gem.
5. Look for your favorite writer’s book suggestions
In many interviews, when writers are asked about some of their favorite recommendations, they often suggest books that are somehow similar to their genre and writing style. But, they are often great reads of different authors about many people do not know. So, it works like a chance to find something new or discover new authors, so you must try this as well.
