Q) Diksha, can share with us the story behind Fulchand Gulabchand Jewellers and how it has evolved over the years?

Diksha Rajawat: Fulchand Gulabchand Jewelers was initiated by my grandmother, who took the bold step of venturing into business contrary to the norms of her time. Despite my grandfather’s educational background, she believed in the power of entrepreneurship over conventional job security.

Mortgaging her wedding jewels, she established our first store and enlisted her three sons to join her. Now, as the third generation in charge, I find myself leading the company once again. It’s a testament to our family’s legacy and resilience in adapting to change.

Q) What inspired the transition from traditional Gheru and big Ghantans to Polki and diamond jewelry, while still maintaining a connection to your roots?

Diksha Rajawat: Initially, our focus was on traditional Maharashtrian jewelry like Gherus and Ghantans, which held significant cultural value. However, observing shifting customer preferences, even among those deeply rooted in tradition, we recognized the desire for contemporary designs.

Customers approached us, expressing interest in blending tradition with modern trends, prompting us to introduce elements like Polki and diamond accents into our traditional pieces. It’s been a gratifying journey to cater to evolving tastes while preserving our heritage.

Q) Diksha, how do you ensure that the values of honesty, trust, and respect are reflected in every aspect of your business operations?

Diksha Rajawat: These values are the cornerstone of our operations, shaping every interaction with our clients, manufacturers, and artisans. Transparent pricing exemplifies honesty, ensuring clients are well informed about the quality and authenticity of our products.

Trust is fostered through education, empowering clients to make informed decisions, especially regarding certifications like gold hallmarking. Lastly, fostering a culture of mutual respect within our team ensures that everyone feels valued and supported, ultimately enhancing the customer experience.

Q) Could you elaborate on the significance of Kolkata’s artisans in crafting the exceptional jewelry pieces for Fulchand Gulabchand?

Diksha Rajawat: Kolkata’s artisans possess unparalleled finesse and expertise, particularly in intricate designs like the Kolkatti style. Pieces like the Kalkatti necklace or earrings are renowned for their delicate Jaal patterns, requiring meticulous attention and nearly 20 days to craft a single necklace. The dedication and skill these artisans bring to their craft are unmatched, infusing each piece with unparalleled beauty and craftsmanship.

Q) What sets Fulchand Gulabchand apart from other jewelry brands in terms of design innovation and exclusivity?

Diksha Rajawat: At Fulchand Gulabchand, we prioritize continuous innovation while honoring our heritage. Regular brainstorming sessions with my father allow us to revisit our archives and reimagine timeless designs with a contemporary twist.

By incorporating gemstones, diamond accents, or traditional meena work, we breathe new life into classic pieces, ensuring they resonate with our clientele. Feedback from our loyal customers guides our decisions, ensuring that reintroduced designs evoke nostalgia while remaining relevant in today’s market. This blend of tradition and innovation defines our exclusivity in the industry.

Q) Diksha, as a women led business, how do you navigate and thrive in an industry that has historically been male dominated?

Diksha Rajawat: Being a woman, especially a 22 year old woman in this industry, I’ve faced significant struggles compared to my male counterparts. People often question how I navigate and thrive in a historically male dominated industry, assuming I have the backing of my father. However, I want to emphasize that I strive to be an independent voice.

While having support is crucial, there were times when I wasn’t taken seriously, which can be disheartening. It’s essential to have a supportive environment, especially when dealing with artisans who may not grasp the rapid changes in the world.

Despite the challenges, I believe in pushing boundaries and making a mark in the industry from a business administration perspective, rather than just design. It’s been a journey filled with struggles, but I remain determined to succeed.

Q) Diksha, can you tell us more about your vision of establishing the first Fulchand Gulabchand boutique specializing in mangalsutras and how you plan to achieve this goal?

Diksha Rajawat: We were once known as the “House of Mangalsutras,” offering a wide range of designs and weights, catering to various customer preferences. However, with rising gold prices, maintaining such inventory became challenging.

Nevertheless, I’m determined to reclaim that title and specialize in mangalsutras once again. It requires significant investment and risk, but I’m committed to the journey. By revisiting our roots and focusing on customer needs, I believe we can revive this aspect of our business and serve our clientele with excellence.

Q) What strategies do you employ to ensure that Fulchand Gulabchand remains at the forefront of the jewelry industry in Mumbai?

Diksha Rajawat: Building strong customer relationships is our priority. We focus on making customers, not just sales, and strive to turn satisfied customers into loyal advocates. Staying attuned to industry trends and anticipating future changes allows us to offer innovative designs and services.
