Continue reading to know all about this aesthetically pleasing fancy tool!
1) What is a Face Roller?
A face roller is a skin massaging device generally made out of expensive ancient stones/ crystals or other stones such as jade stone, gua sha, rose quartz, etc., and is used as a manual massager for stimulating blood flow, depuffing face or for lymphatic drainage.
The practice of using a facial roller has been going on for decades.
2) Types of Face Rollers?
2.1) Jade Rose Quartz Roller:
Jade Rose quartz is the most popular, pretty, and pink facial roller. It has inherent minerals in it with healing properties that help to remove toxins, stress, and negative energy from your face and decreases puffiness that causes lymphatic flow.

It also has an outstanding ability to maintain consistent temperatures, meaning if you want a cold facial massage for a longer period, then cooling rose quartz just for a few minutes will provide you with that. The same goes for a hot facial massage too.
2.2) Jade Roller:
The Jade roller is an ancient Chinese beauty tool made out of jade stone, which is emerald green in colour. The jade roller is naturally cool, and therefore, its coldness helps to reduce puffiness, increase blood circulation, promote lymphatic drainage, and improve blood flow on the face.

Jade rollers are also calming in nature and they help to reduce inflammation, skin redness, etc. Regular massage with jade rollers improves our body’s sympathetic nervous activity.
2.3) Amethyst Face Roller:
Amethyst is a healing and soothing crystal, hence, great for acne-prone skin. It calms skin inflammation, boosts skin cells, attracts positive energy from the body, and eliminates negative mood status.

Using an amethyst roller regularly has shown improvement in overall skin conditions and mental and emotional health conditions. The Amethyst roller has a much more silky smooth feel than the jade roller.
2.4) Metal Face Roller:
A Metal roller is a V-shaped tool with two round metal rollers attached to its end. The two rollers act like knuckles and help in sculpting cheekbones and jawlines. Storing the metal roller in the refrigerator before using it will give you a cooling effect and will reduce puffiness on the face.

Massaging your face with a metal roller will help better absorb your anti-ageing cream. It will also decrease puffiness on the face, and boost circulation. Massaging your face with a cold metal spoon gives a similar feeling.
2.5) Facial Cups:
Facial cups are a bit different than face rollers, but the potential benefits of facial cupping are similar to that of facial rolling. Facial cupping uses suction cups that gently suck and pull on your facial muscles, leading to increased blood circulation to your face. These face cups are made out of silicone, soft gel, or out of similar other materials.
This procedure might sound and look scary, and the question of bruising may also arise but don’t worry because this treatment is medically reviewed. However, if you want to give face cupping a try, then we urge you to see a professional practitioner or a board-certified dermatologist.
3) Benefits of using Face Rollers:
3.1) Drains the Lymphatic System:
The lymphatic system, with the help of thousands of lymph nodes, collects and eliminates lymph (the fluid that carries toxins and white blood cells) from our body. However, due to hindrances in this process, sometimes the lymph fluid starts to collect and build up in certain areas of our skin hence, causing puffiness or swelling.
For this reason, manual lymphatic drainage, and lymphatic, or facial massage are done.
3.2) Decreases Puffiness:
If you are waking up with a swollen or puffy face and no amount of beauty sleep seems to reduce it then facial rollers are your best friend! Decreasing puffiness is the best benefit out of the many benefits given by facial rollers. These crystal rollers feel cool on the skin and this coolness plus the gentle pressure relaxes and drains out the excess fluid off our face.
3.3) Increased Blood Flow:
Facial massage roller stimulates vascular reactivity to our face temporarily. Face rolling increases sympathetic nervous activity, improving our facial skin blood flow. This makes our skin tone appear brighter, healthy and flushed temporarily.
3.4) Better Absorption of Skincare Products:
Jade rollers help in better absorption of skincare products. Using fingers to massage skincare into our skin often causes unnecessary pulling and tugging. This can be avoided if we use a face roller.
3.5) Relieves Stress and Muscle Tension:
Going to parlors daily for facial massage is not a feasible option; a facial roller comes to our rescue in this situation. There’s a lot of muscle tension built up on our faces; face rolling will relieve this tension and stress. Facial massage reduces anxiety, improves our mood, and gives mental satisfaction and a luxurious feel to our skincare routine.

4) Myths:
4.1) Cures Acne:
There are claims suggesting that crystals have the energy to heal your body. Having said that, these are just claims, and there are no scientific shreds of evidence to back up these claims. Acne can be caused due to several reasons. A dermatologist’s guidance is required to identify this underlying cause of acne. Therefore, face rollers curing acne is a huge myth.
4.2) Treats Rosacea:
Rosacea flareup has more to do with internal issues than external ones. Facial rollers, as we all know, help only with our external issues. Therefore, a visit to the dermatologist is necessary to treat rosacea, and no amount of face rolling will help with it.
4.3) Gives you a Jawline:
Face rolling temporarily depuffs the face and helps in lymphatic drainage. There are no studies whatsoever to prove that a facial roller will help you in building that chiseled jawline. Without a proper exercise routine and diet, building your body, muscles, or jawline is impossible.
4.4) Builds collagen:
Biggest Myth! The only way to develop human dermis proteins or collagen in our skin is through laser treatments, injection fillers, botox, etc. Face rollers will not tighten up your loose skin permanently.
4.5) Erases Wrinkles:
Another biggest myth! Face rollers are marketed as an anti-ageing tool but let me clarify that they are not! No, face rolling does not vanish in vivo facial wrinkles, and it’s high time we accept that ageing, having wrinkles under your eyes, on your face, and on your hands, are fine and is part of a human cycle. With the help of retinol or fillers, one can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but you can’t get rid of wrinkles or erase them and face rollers are certainly not going to help you with that.
5) How to Use a Face Roller?
5.1) Store the face roller in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes to get a cooling effect while using it.
5.2) Start by prepping your skin. Use a lubricant on your face and neck so that the roller can easily glide on your skin. A serum, facial oil, moisturizer, or even a sheet mask would work.
5.3) Begin at your clavicle, i.e. your décolleté and neck. Place the roller on your clavicle and slowly, with gentle pressure, roll upwards. Repeat this 8-10 times on every side.
5.4) Use upward motions only. Do not drag the roller back and forth.
5.5) Next are your jawline and cheekbones. Start from the tip of your chin and roll along the jawline to your ear. Repeat this step 8-10 times, then switch to the other side.
5.6) Massage the face roller on your cheekbone using the same stroke and upward motion.
5.7)Finally, massage your forehead and eyebrows. Start in the middle of your forehead and roll the face roller toward your hairline. Repeat this step on your entire forehead area 8-10 times.
5.8) Roll flat, in a horizontal direction over your eyebrows. Start in the middle of your eyebrows, then move outwards. This will help in relieving muscle tension.
5.9) Lastly, using the smaller roller, massage your under-eyes. Start from the inner corner of the eye and, using light pressure roll towards the outer corner of the eye. Repeat this action on each side.
5.10) Last step is to clean your face roller after every use as you will use it on your face every day. Never miss this step. Wash your roller under hot water or warm water thoroughly and then wipe it dry with a clean cloth.
Do Face Rollers Work?
There is still more research left to be done on the benefits of facial rollers. While there are still not enough peer-reviewed studies explaining the scientific benefits of using a face roller, the feel, the self-care, the mental satisfaction, and the luxurious feeling a face roller provides us with definitely counts for something.
After all skin care is also about an experience, it’s a feeling for most of us. If you like the feeling of having an elegant skincare routine, of having that skincare experience, then you can continue using face rollers in your regime.
Face rollers are not a must-have for everyone. Having said that face rollers do not cause any harm to your skin either. It’s not harmful to your skin and your skin can also survive just fine without its use.
The experience of a facial roller might vary depending on person to person. For some people using a face roller regularly has reduced puffiness, while for others, it has done absolutely nothing.
Studies are also being conducted on facial rollers helping in breast cancer treatment.
So, our final takeaway from this article is that face rollers do work for some conditions, for some they don’t, and buying a face roller or not is your personal preference.
