Looking for easy ways how to do makeup at home? Well, we got you.
You need makeup, makeup brushes, a makeup tutorial, and this article to do your makeup at home. Here, I’ll tell you the best sequence of makeup applications, how to apply makeup if you are starting, and a simple makeup routine that you can follow without any problem.
Skincare
The first and most important step before applying makeup to your face is, applying skincare to your face. Since the face is the actual base on top of which you apply your makeup, it needs to be adequately moisturized.
Makeup does not wear well on dry, dehydrated, uncared skin. Therefore, make sure you have washed your face and applied moisturizer. If you’re planning to go out, wear your sunscreen.
Once all of that is done, wait for 15 minutes for your skincare to settle before going in with the next step.
Primer
Primer is the product you apply on your face to prime your face for makeup application. You don’t need a makeup brush, and it can be applied with fingers. There are different primers formulated for different purposes.
A pore minimizing primer is used to fill pores to get a smooth porcelain skin.
A hydrating primer is used on the dry parts of the face so that makeup doesn’t crack or cling to dry patches. This primer is a cult favorite among the dry-skin type gang.
A glowy primer is mainly applied to the high points of the face, like the cheekbones, tip of the nose, and Cupid’s bow. This primer gives you a glowing from within look.
A gripping primer makes your face tacky so that makeup sticks to it. This prolongs the wear of makeup.
Foundation
The first two steps were part of the skin prep before makeup. Now we are moving into actually applying makeup, and the first step of applying face makeup is the foundation.
Foundation is the makeup product used to even out the skin tone and give you coverage.
The coverage levels are different for different foundations. Light coverage foundations don’t cover up much hyperpigmentation. A medium-coverage foundation can cover up darkness and scars up to a certain extent, but if you have a lot of hyperpigmentation and you want all of that covered up, go for a high coverage foundation.
To know the right shade of foundation for you, make sure you know your skin tone and undertone. Makeup brands usually divide skin tones among Fair, light, light-medium, medium-deep, deep, and dark skin tones.
Undertones are either warm or yellow, cool or pink, and neutral, which is a mixture of yellow and pink and olive or green undertone.
How to apply:
If you use a liquid foundation, take it on the back of your hand and apply it with a foundation brush or a damp sponge. A brush provides more coverage, whereas a sponge gives you lighter coverage.
A thick layer makes the makeup look heavy and caked up. Always apply a thin layer first and build up to where you need to. This will ensure you don’t have too much foundation on your face.
Powder foundations are great for a natural look. They are a godsend for oily skin people. If you use a powder foundation, take a dense brush, swirl it in the pan and blend the foundation evenly on your face.
Concealer
Concealer is used to conceal anything you want to cover on your face. This could be dark under-eye circles, acne scars, pimples, hyperpigmentation, or redness. Anything that your foundation couldn’t cover, concealer will.
Use a small concealer brush, a makeup sponge, or your fingers to apply concealer to your dark circles and inner corners of the eyes. Using a concealer that is a shade lighter than your skin tone brightens your under eyes and gives you a fresh, well-rested look.
For spot concealing, always use a shade that matches your skin color. Doing this will only highlight whatever you want to hide. But you can’t use a lighter concealer to spot conceal.
Powder
After applying foundation and concealer, it is time to set them in place with powder. After you apply makeup, you need to set it, especially liquid foundation and concealer, because they tend to slip and slide on your face.
If powdering the face has been skipped, the skin’s natural oils start to peak through. That is where the excess shine comes from.
You should powder your whole face if you have oily skin as makeup tends to move around on your skin type. If you have dry skin, you probably don’t like the feel of powder on your already matte face.
You should dust a little bit of it on the t-zone, which consists of the center of the forehead, the bridge of the nose, and the chin. These are the areas that get oily the quickest.
You can use a damp sponge or a fluffy powder brush to apply it.
Bronzer
The face is usually not the same color all over. Some areas are lighter than others, the cheeks have a flush of color to them, and the outer perimeters of the face are more sun-kissed.
Applying foundation takes all those colors away and makes the face one even tone. This doesn’t look natural. So, to bring life back to the face, color is added back to it in the form of bronzer and blush.
A bronzer is generally a darker color to your skin, and it is warmer in tone. It is used to give your face a sun-kissed illusion. Apply bronzer to the cheekbones and the outer forehead area. Put a light dusting on their nose.
These are all the areas where the sun’s rays usually hit the face. Now that the bronzer has added back some dimension to the face, it wouldn’t look so flat and one-dimensional.
Contour
The contour is also a few shades darker than your skin tone, and it looks similar to bronzer, but the difference is in the undertones. Where bronzer has warm undertones to warm up the skin’s complexion, contour is cool-toned as it is used to recreate a shadow-like effect in the hollows of the cheeks and any other areas you want to contour.
People use contour on areas of the face that they want to look slimmer. The shadowy hues on the contour, when applied to the hollows of the cheeks, pushes them back and make the cheekbones appear more pronounced.
The same happens when you put this powder on the outer corners of the forehead, it makes your forehead look smaller. People like to contour their noses by applying a cooler-toned shade on the corners and a lighter shade on the bridge of the nose.
Use a smaller, angled brush to apply contour.
Blush
Blush is applied to the apples of your cheeks to bring back some color since our cheeks naturally do have a flush of color to them.
Some matte blushes and blushes have specks of shimmer to them. The most flattering, in my opinion, are the blushes that have a satin finish. A product that has a satin finish is not too matte, and neither is it too shimmery. It is right in the middle of the two, making it the most natural-looking option.
Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks with a fluffy blush brush. There are so many colors of blush available in the market. You can get a peach blush, a pink blush, a nude-brown shade, and even purple blush are very popular these days.
You can experiment with all these different colors and have lots of fun with your makeup look. Just make sure you keep it to just the apples of your cheeks and not drag it down.
Eye makeup
The next step in your makeup routine is by far the most fun. Eye makeup is many people’s favorite step in their makeup routine because it is so much you can do with it.
All the colors in the world can be used to enhance the beauty of your eyes. To find your perfect eye makeup, you can play with different tones, textures, finishes, and formulas.
Eyeshadow
As the name suggests, eye shadow is a product that goes on the eyelids. They come in so many different colors and finishes. There are matte eyeshadows, shimmery, glittery satin, and duochromes. You can find these products in powder, cream, and stick forms.
If you have just started wearing makeup, the plethora of options when you go to buy eye makeup products must be quite overwhelming for you.
To be on the safest side, I recommend you start with a palette with neutral shades. These shades are ones we naturally find in our skin, and therefore, they look the most natural when they are on the lids.
Shades of beige, light and dark brown, and different shades of pink and mauvy purples are colors you will find here.
These are the most versatile colors in the sense that they can be worn during the day and at night. You can wear it to brunch and at a formal function. They always look good.
How to apply eyeshadow
Start with a light shade that is closest to your skin tone, and with the help of a fluffy brush, put it all over your eyelids. This will be the base color. Now, take a darker shade on a smaller eyeshadow brush and stamp it in your outer corner. Use a light hand and start blending the dark shade into the crease and outwards using circular and windshield wiper motions.
If you want to go even smokier with your eye makeup, take a shade that is deeper than the previous one and deepen the outer corner with it. Now, you can either use a shimmery shade lighter than your outer corner or a matte shade on the rest of the lid.
Lastly, apply a shimmery nude eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eye and on the brow bone. This makes your eyes pop and look more awake.
Eyeliner
Eyeliner is the makeup product used to line the eyes, hence its name being eyeliner. Eyeliners come in different forms. Beginners should start with pencil eyeliner because that is the easiest to control.
You can draw any eyeliner shape you like on your upper eyelid. You can also put it in the upper and lower lash line. Pencil liner is very easy to smudge out, so it is perfect for smoky eye makeup.
Liquid eyeliner
Liquid eyeliner, on the other hand, is more difficult to control. It is a little harder to make things right if you make a mistake with this thing because it is liquid, it is dark, and it tends to get everywhere when you try to wipe out your error and start again.
But, that doesn’t mean you can’t be a master at applying liquid eyeliner if you practice and perfect your technique.
The best way to apply liquid liner is by resting your elbow on a table and your pinky on your face so that your hand is as steady as possible. Have a mirror close to your eye to see what you are doing.
Start in the middle of your eye and, using short strokes, line the outer half of your eye. Keep your liner close to your upper lash line, so you don’t make the line too thick.
After the outer half of your eyelid has been lined the way you like it, move to your inner corner and draw short lines till they connect with the one you drew before. Now, if you want, you can make the line thicker, draw a wing, whatever your heart desires.
It is okay if one-liner looks a little different from the other. As makeup artist Katie Jane Hughs says, they are not twins, and they are cousins! Please do the same on the other eye and remember, you don’t need to make them twins.
Eyebrows
To those people who have naturally full eyebrows, you don’t even need to mess with them. Just run a little eyebrow gel through them, and you are good to go.
If you are someone who has sparse areas on your brows, take an eyebrow pencil that is similar in color to your hair color and lightly fill in your brows. Keep diffusing the product with either your finger or an eyebrow spoolie so that the eyebrow doesn’t look too strong and out of place.
An eyebrow pencil is the easiest to use and is more affordable than eyebrow pomades, but you can choose whichever product you like.
Eyelash curler
Now that the eyes are done, it is time to move on to the eyelashes. An eyelash curler is a makeup product used to curl your lashes, making your eyes look bigger and wide awake.
Put the lash curler on your lashes and give them a few pumps to stay curled for a long time. Mascara applies beautifully on curled lashes.
Mascara
Mascara lengthens and adds volume to your eyelashes. There are so many good ones in the market. If you have lighter hair, you can choose to go for a brown mascara to get a natural look. Black mascara is great for people who have darker hair.
Take your mascara brush and gently coat your lashes with the mascara. Applying one coat will give you a natural look, and if you apply more coats, your lashes will get fuller and more dramatic. Be careful not to poke yourself in the eye with the mascara brush. That can be very painful.
False lashes
False lashes give the eyes are more glamorous look, and they always make your eye makeup look pop.
Take some lash glue on the back of your hand, dip the band of the fake eyelash in the glue and apply it to your lash line either with your hands or with the help of a tweezer.
Lips
Even if you are someone who doesn’t apply makeup, you still must have at least a lip gloss in your makeup bag. To make your lips look good, you need to care for them. Use a lip balm or a lip conditioner throughout the day, but especially before you are about to put on lipstick.
Lip liner
Lip liner is used to line the lips so that the lip gloss or lipstick doesn’t bleed outside the lip lines. You should get a lip liner close to your skin color so that it can work with many a lip color.
Line the top and bottom lips with your lip liner, and make sure you do not go outside the lip lines.
Lipstick
Apply lipstick to your lips either from the lipstick bullet or a small fluffy brush. The brush gives a natural, diffused lip line that looks beautiful and makes the lips look bigger.
If you want your lipstick to last all day or something you can wear under a face mask, wear liquid lipstick. Just remember, a thin layer of your preferred lip color is your best bet when you’re wearing liquid lipstick.
Lip gloss
A lip gloss is usually not as opaque as a traditional lipstick and provides a beautiful sheen to the lips that makes them look juicy, pouty, and big. Unlike some lip products, a lip gloss wouldn’t dry out your lips, and it also looks the most natural out of all your options.
Setting spray
The last makeup step is to set your makeup look in place with a setting spray. This product helps your makeup stay on, looking great for a long time.
