Lookout Mountain is a mountain ridge situated at the northwest corner of Georgia, the northeast corner of Alabama, and along the southeastern Tennessee state line in Chattanooga (the United States). The name of lookout mountain came from the Greek term for “rock rising to a point.” 

The caves of Lookout mountain are called ruby falls and are situated on the ridge. The southwestern part of Lookout Mountain is in Alabama. The area’s key attractions are White Water sports and rock climbing. Also, it’s claimed that one can see seven U.S. states: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama from the “Rock City Gardens” point. 

Another popular and tourist stop, Sunset Rock, is located on the northwest side of Lookout Mountain. It comes under the segment of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park (national park service). One can view the Tennessee River, Signal Mountain, and Prentice Cooper State Forest from Sunset Rock. The rock has been made easier for routing and climbing. 

History of Lookout Mountain

Before you visit Lookout Mountain and visit its world-famous attractions, let’s learn a bit about Lookout Mountain’s history. The Chickamauga people used to call the mountain Chat-a-nu-ga. In August 1823, Daniel Butrick and William Chamberlain reached at Lookout Mountain to perform some missionary work with Native Americans. After the series of forced relocations, the land was taken from the tribes and was owned by a few wealthy Chattanooga families. 

When you search lookout mountain, Sunset Rock, also known as the point lookout is the first thing that probably pops up. It was under JB Linn’s control in 1863. He and his brother had built a small shack (Gallery Point Lookout) and took photographs of war commanders and officers and even wealthy civilians in the area. Till today, though the lookout house is no longer in existence, many of Linn and his brother’s photographs still exist. 

People living in Chattanooga believed that they were immune to an epidemic because of the mountain climate. But then 2 people died of a disease in 1878, and with that fear, almost 12,000 people fled from the city. Many people fled to the top of the mountain, thinking that the shift would protect them from the epidemic. And with all of the major changes in the 1990s, Lookout Mountain was included as a town.

There are some setbacks while living in the town that includes that outbuildings are not allowed, fencing must be a minimum of 40 inches from the street, and the Commission should approve shortage of the setbacks.

2. Golden Colorado

Golden Colorado is located at a 7,377-foot peak in the Lookout Mountain Park and 2.7 km west of downtown Golden. The place is famous for its natural scenery and fabulous Golden View while enjoying hiking, mountain biking, and cycling at Lookout Mountain. 

You can visit the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway, a road that starts from Golden up the steep to the east side of Lookout Mountain. They also have a nature center where volunteer naturalists inspire visitors and locals to connect with the natural world. The staff takes everyone on a tour of flora and fauna of the foothills ecosystem.

3. Incline Railway

The incline railway service gives a visit to the exciting attractions of the lookout mountains, it is a National Historic Site. The Incline lower station is named St. Elmo, where you can browse unique gift shops and enjoy seasonal music before you board on your expedition to the world’s steepest railway. You enjoy the gorgeous panoramic views of the Chattanooga Valley from the Top Station. 

Incline railways use steep grades with a cable. With the cable’s help, the steel wheels are used primarily to guide the train along the tracks. To a surprise, The Incline Railway has been transporting people up at Lookout Mountain for almost 125 years.

You can click photos, enjoy the breathtaking views and explore other attractions located at the top of Lookout Mountain. You can tour many places through railways like point park, rock city, and ruby falls. After you are done with the incline railway journey, you can also check out the history of St. Elmo.

4. Chattanooga

Chattanooga river gives you fresh air, good food, and better views. The path stretches over 25.7km, though you do not have to cover it all in one go and can stop for a treat. You will cross the Tennessee River’s views, which makes it a more memorable journey to the end. On the way, you can hop on to the Boathouse for some sightseeing and direct towards your south for an amazing view.

You can even detour across the Walnut Street Bridge into North Chattanooga or keep on heading in the north direction of the river towards the Tennessee Aquarium. There are many places to stop by for food, like Rembrandts Coffee House, Scottie’s, and The Boathouse, and nearby is a Hunter Museum of American Art where you can stop and look at the artwork by the locals of the town. 

Tennessee Aquarium is one of the top-rated aquaria in America. Your excitement will begin with a wonderful and exciting Ocean Journey building. There, you will get a chance to come physically close with feisty otters, enormous Arapaima giant catfish, tons of turtles, and penguins, touch a stingray, and toothy sharks, lemurs, and jellyfish.

Make sure you spend around three hours in the aquarium, observing and learning about all of the diverse gatherings of animals. The place has facilities for the disabled as well.
