Pirates of the Caribbean in Order
1. Tales of the Code: Wedlocked- 2011
This short film is not quite the first film of the Caribbean movies, but a prequel to it. Many pirate fans might not even know about this film as it is confined to the home media box sets.
This short film though a prequel to the story came seven years after the first pirates of the Caribbean film and was inspired by the auction scene in the Disneyland attraction. When sorting Pirates of the Caribbean in order, many might forget that this little movie exists. So, here it is. Even though it’s not the first Pirates film, this is the first movie to be watched when you’re binge-watching pirates of the Caribbean in order.
Directed by James Ward Byrkit and written by the original writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, this short film follows the story of two women who believe they’re betrothed to Jack Sparrow (the one and only Johnny Depp) but, in reality, are traded to an auctioneer.
Starring John Vickery (as an auctioneer), Vanessa Branch (as Giselle), and Lauren Maher (as Scarlett), this live-action short was based on the Pirate Code Book, which ties into the other movies. It also gives us an insight as to why women hate Jack Sparrow! (So much that they attack his left and right) And why Jack Sparrow’s boat, the Jolly Mon was, sinking in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie?
When you watch this, keep in mind that they managed to do this in three days. Interesting, right?
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl- 2003
The first impression is the best impression. As the first film of the Caribbean franchise, The Curse of the Black Pearl sure did create the best impression a movie could ever create. Set during the golden age of piracy, this movie follows the story of a blacksmith Will Turner (played by Orlando Bloom), son of pirate “Bootstrap” Bill Turner, who allies with Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to rescue his love interest, Elizabeth Swann (played by Keira Knightley) from Hector Barbossa (played by Geoffrey Rush), captain of the cursed ship Black Pearl, the crew of which is cursed to become undead in the moonlight.
Captain Barbossa and the crew, who stranded Jack Sparrow on an island, captured a treasure that was cursed. To break this curse, they need all the 882 pieces of gold from the treasure, one of which was taken by Will’s father and passed on to him, which was now in Elizabeth’s possession, leading to her abduction and thus embarking on a journey of traps and betrayals. From Barbossa, who wants Bill Turner’s blood, Will, who’s adamant about saving Elizabeth, and Captain Jack Sparrow, who’s in the middle of everything, this movie gives it all.
Directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, this Kickstarter to one helluva pirate series tore the expectations of pirate movies being a flop into a million pieces. The movie was a major box office hit, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year. Though this is the first movie in the franchise to be released and the first proper Pirate film, it comes second when you sort Pirates of the Caribbean in order.
This is the movie that you’ll always remember as the movie that brought you to Captain Jack Sparrow!
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest- 2006
Dead man’s chest, the second installment of the Caribbean movies (though it has the third place when watching pirates of the Caribbean in order), directed by Gore Verbinski, and written by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, brings more of the myths and mysteries of the seas to us.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was the highest-grossing film of the year 2006 and was the third film in history to reach the $1 billion mark worldwide, and it reached the mark in record time.
This is the movie where we get to see Davy Jones (played by Bill Nighy), aka the sea monster with an octopus-like face, tentacle beard, and crab limbs.
And our dearest Captain Jack Sparrow has a debt that requires him to serve on Jones’ ship, the Flying Dutchman. So, he wants the dead man’s chest with Jones’ heart to free himself. On the other hand, Lord Cutler Beckett (played by Tom Hollander) of the East India Trading Company arrests Will Turner by interrupting his and Elizabeth’s wedding ceremony for abetting Jack Sparrow but makes a deal with him. He will free Will only if he finds the dead man’s chest using Sparrow’s compass. The chest contains Davy Jones’s heart, by which Lord Beckett can control the seas.
Stream this movie after Tales of the Code and Curse of the Black Pearl when watching Pirates of the Caribbean in order.
4. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End- 2007
The third main movie of the Caribbean franchise (the fourth one when watching Pirates of the Caribbean in order), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, picks up directly from the last film, continuing the story of Davy Jones’ locker and the dead man’s chest.
Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, and Captain Barbossa, along with his crew of Black Pearl, go to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones’ locker so that Lord Beckett can be stopped from controlling Davy Jones and eliminating piracy. And guess what? The worst pirate you’ve ever heard of- but you have heard of him– is the one who finds all of them a way back into the world.
After a funny, mysterious, adventurous fight, Will ends up being the guide to lost souls at sea and goes with the Flying Dutchman, leaving his heart with his wife, Elizabeth Turner.
This is the last movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in which Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley’s characters, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, have major roles.
At the world’s end also has Stellan Skarsgård, Chow Yun-fat, Jack Davenport, Kevin R. McNally, and Jonathan Pryce in major roles. The third installment of the Caribbean series is the highest-grossing film of 2007[59] and the third-highest-grossing film in the series.
Folks, this is the movie in which Will and Elizabeth finally tie the knot!
And don’t think the tales of Jack Sparrow are over. He’s up to find the fountain of youth.
Ahoy!
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides- 2011
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the fourth installment of the Caribbean movies and the fifth one when watching Pirates of the Caribbean in order. This movie is produced by the former movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer, written by the original writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, and directed by Rob Marshall. This movie, along with Johnny Depp, stars Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, and Kevin McNally in major roles.
It is the second most popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie and the third-highest-grossing movie of 2011. Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides, the fourth movie in the franchise, is loosely based on the 1987 novel, On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers.
The film continues Jack Sparrow’s adventure to find the Fountain of Youth. He is forced to team up with his former lover Angelica (played by Penélope Cruz) the infamous Blackbeard’s daughter (Blackbeard played by Ian McShane). She wants the magical Fountain of Youth for her father. Meanwhile, good ol’ friend/enemy Captain Hector Barbossa (played by Geoffrey Rush) in Royal Navy is also hunting for the Fountain of Youth.
This movie, a standalone sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, is the first one in the pirates of the Caribbean series not to feature Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley.
But don’t think it’s less fun or adventurous than Ji’s previous ones. Wherever Jack Sparrow is, fun follows!
6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales- 2017
Internationally released as Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, this fifth film of the Caribbean movies opens thirteen years after Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World’s End.
A twelve-year-old Henry Turner (played by Brenton Thwaites), Will and Elizabeth’s son, finds out that the curse on the Flying Dutchman can be broken by the Trident of Poseidon and intends to seek Captain Jack Sparrow for help. Will believes it impossible and returns to the sea, leaving a persistent Henry to live with his mother.
Nine years later, Henry finds Jack Sparrow, and together with Barbossa and the crew of Black Pearl and Carina Smyth (played by Kaya Scodelario), a young astronomer sets out to follow the Map No Man Can Read and find the Trident of Poseidon. Meanwhile, Silent Mary and the ghostly crew led by Spanish pirate-hunter Captain Armando Salazar are hunting Jack Sparrow for revenge. It was young Jack who defeated Salazar and sent him to Devil’s Triangle.
This fifth and last (currently last) film of the Pirates of the Caribbean series brings Orlando Bloom and Elizabeth Swann to reprise their roles in the series and ends happily.
But don’t worry, this adventurous film, directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and written by Jeff Nathanson, gives you a mysterious post-credit scene.
Batten down the hatches! They gave us Davy Jones coming back to the lives of Will and Elizabeth Turner. Yo ho!
Bye bye Captain Barbossa, your eyepatch will be missed. Speaking of eyepatches…have you ever wondered why pirates wear eyepatches?

7. Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Heartbroken that there are no more Pirates of the Caribbean movie? Don’t worry. A sixth main film (the seventh one when streaming Pirates of the Caribbean in order) and a spin-off to this wonderful franchise are reportedly developing. Even though Captain Jack Sparrow is one the most beloved characters and the backbone of Pirates of the Caribbean movies, it’s unlikely for Jack Sparrow to return to the franchise.
Following the accusations by his ex-wife and the legal fights, Johnny Depp was dropped from the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie by Disney. Though Depp won the lawsuit against his ex-wife, proving that the allegations against him were false, he made it clear that he would not return as Captain Jack Sparrow. Now, that’s a reason to be heartbroken.
So unless the sixth film is a reboot, recasting the characters, it is unlikely to see Captain Jack Sparrow again. But the recent news has that the film will be going on without the iconic character, focusing on the story and other characters. Kaya Scodelario, who played the role of Caryna Smith in the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, stated that according to the contract signed, she was to return for a sixth film.
8. Pirates of the Caribbean Spin-off
A female lead spin-off of the pirate’s franchise was announced in 2020 with Christina Hodson as the screenplay writer. Since Disney announced that the sixth installment would be a female lead movie, fans have dug into the Caribbean world and are speculating the movie will be about Redd, a red-haired female pirate on the theme park ride. Even though Redd started out as a captive bride sold at the auction, she eventually became a pirate, auctioning off goods stolen from the village.
Maybe fans are right. A female pirate would be incredible; we had Penélope Cruz as Angelica from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides prove it.
Recently the producer of Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Jerry Bruckheimer, confirmed that Margot Robbie would be appearing in one of the two announced pirates movies (either the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie or the spinoff)
Well, that’s a piece of good news, isn’t it? Two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie playing a pirate? That’s something to look forward to. The movie will be in talented hands in every aspect, considering the original writer of Pirates of the Caribbean, Ted Elliot, along with Craig Mazin, are working on the script.
Now that we’ve talked about all the existing movies in the Pirates of the Caribbean world and the upcoming ones as well let’s sum it up and list out all the movies in Pirates of the Caribbean in order.
