I enjoy movies, and 2016 has been a really good year for all the movie-buffs out there. With the swoon-worthy Chris Hemsworth starring in ‘The Huntsman: Winters War,’ the dramatic and somewhat revolutionary (purely because of their depiction of a gay man) ‘Kapoor and Sons’, and more recently, the beautifully made ‘Jungle Book.’ I’ve watched all these movies (as I said, I enjoy movies) and have passed my utterly sound judgment on all of them as well (spoiler alert – I loved them).
The good news, though? There is still a pile of great movies stacked in store for us this year. Now, with hundreds of movies being made each year, figuring out which ones to be excited about can be a little tricky. Don’t worry though, we’ve rounded up our favorite upcoming movies, just for you. So get your popcorn, a glass of coke, and chill.
Mirzya
After giving us the tearjerking ‘Rang De Basanti,’ filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is here to give us (hopefully) another beautiful tearjerker. In Mirzya, he attempts a retelling of the Mirza- Sahiban legend. Set to hit the screen on May 13, 2016, this film will introduce two newbies to Bollywood – Anil Kapor’s son Harshavardhan and Saiyami Kher. Based on one of the 4 tragic Punjabi romances, this movie is said to play out entirely in verses and sounds. It looks like it’s well on its way to becoming a classic.
Mohenjo Daro
Recently, our desi Greek god, the heartbreakingly handsome Hrithik Roshan, has been in the news for anything BUT his acting. Hopefully, him reuniting with filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar is going to change that. This film, produced by Disney India, is, as the name suggests, set in the ancient Indus Valley civilization. It stars model Pooja Hegde opposite Roshan and is expected to be released in July.
Captain America – Civil War
A sequel to the 2014 ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ and having already been released abroad to rave reviews, the very idea of this movie gets me excited. Maybe it’s because it stars so many amazing people, or because it pits two of my favorite Avengers against each other, or because I’m just a hopeless Marvel geek. The point is, I cannot wait to watch this movie. Marvel has created an extremely successful series of movies out of their Avengers, and I have loved every one of them. However, with reviews calling this the best Avengers’ movie yet, this is definitely something you do not want to miss.
Me Before You
Based on the 2012 tear-jerking novel by Jojo Moyes, this movie stars the amazing Emilia Clarke and the very good-looking Sam Clafin. It also brings back our favorite Herbology Professor, Matthew Lewis, aka Neville Longbottom. The movie tells the love story of a once active businessman and his young, colorful, spunky caretaker who seems to, quite literally, bring him back to life. The trailer makes you laugh, cry, and fall in with a fictional couple you know very little about; also, it makes you crave your own insanely romantic story.
Suicide Squad
With many exceptional performers, this movie flaunts a host of talented actors – Jared Letto, Viola Davis, and Will Smith. It’s based on the DC Comics antihero team of the same name conceived way back in 2009. It’s been marketed brilliantly and is thought of as one of the biggest movies of the coming year. First Marvel and then DC, 2016 seems to be the year of comic book rivalries!
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them
A gift to every Harry Potter fan, this movie tells the story of Newt Scamander, the writer of our favorite Hogwarts textbook, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’ Starring the handsome and stunningly talented Eddy Redmayne, teaser trailers of this movie have been driving the Harry Potter fandom crazy with excitement (I may or may not be part of said fandom)! And if the trailer is any indicator of the movie, this is possibly going to be one of the most visually stunning movies of 2016. Set to release in November, this movie already has me at the edge of my seat.
So there you have it, our list of movies to look out for in 2016. Up until then, happy movie watching, fellow fanatics! If you have any more movies to add to the list, drop a comment below and let us know.
