One of the most iconic figures of all time in the field of music is Glenn Miller. He was on his way to France but then what? where did the flight go? did he die?
Weโll go through the story of the unexplained disappearance of Glenn Miller in detail.
1. Glenn Miller
1.1 Glennโs Early Life
Born on the 1st of March, 1904, Alton Glen Miller was the leader of an American band, a musician, and a composer. He was brought up and grew up in Clarinda of Iowa. Both his mother and father were involved in the world of music. His mother, Mattie Lou Miller, played piano and his father, Lewis Elmer Miller, played mandolin. Therefore, he started his lessons in music at a young age.
For grade school, he attended Western Nebraska in North Platte. Then in 1915, Glenn Miller, along with his family, moved to Grant city in Missouri. There he earned money by milking cows and bought his first trombone, which he used to play in the town orchestra.
At the age of 11, Glenn Miller started learning about the trombone and eventually, the cornet too. For high school, he went to Fort Morgan in Colorado. There he took part in the school band and orchestra as well.
It was in high school that he added the second โNโ in his name, Glen, making it Glenn. He also made a band with his classmates during his senior year. By the time of his graduation, he already decided on being a professional musician. It was also noted that during his graduation, he was out of town performing. On his behalf, his mother took over the diploma.
Apart from playing the trombone, Miller also played football in high school.
As for the university, in 1923, he attended the University of Colorado Boulder. Here he decides to join theย Sigma Nuย fraternity. He also started to spend a lot of time outside school taking part in performances, including playing with bands. He dropped out of school after failing for the third time and went on to chase his career in music.
1.2 Glennโs Career
Right after dropping out, he went to New York City to learn theย Schillinger system, with Joseph Schillinger. With his help, he composed the โMillerโs Tuneโ. He arranged it for the band and soon it became his signature theme, โMoonlight Serenadeโ.
Glenn traveled around with several bands but at last, in 1926, he managed to get himself a good position in the band by Ben Pollack in Los Angeles. As for the start, he used to play solo trombone. That was until Jack Teagarden joined the band, and Miller realized that he did compose and arrange the best.
While in the group, Miller had written several arrangements and composed with various record labels and mention-worth artists.
Miller worked as a freelancing trombone player for several bands during the late 1920s and 1930s. He also played in the orchestra with musicians like Benny Goodman, Joe Venuti, Tommy Dorsey, etc. Miller continued to work as a trombone player and composer in the early 1930s to mid-1930s, especially for the Dorsey Brothers.
Glenn Miller had his first movie appearance in the movie โThe Big Broadcast of 1936โ as a member of an orchestra, the Ray Noble orchestra. He was performing โWhy Stars Come Out at Night.
1.3 Glenn Miller and His Family
Did Glen Miller marry anyone? Did he have any children?
Yes.
In 1928, Glenn Miller was married to the girl he loved in college, Helen Dorothy Burger. They had adopted two children, Steven Davis Miller and Jonnie Miller. Glenn loved his family and was actively devoted to them. He went out with them on weekends and spent time with them efficiently.
2. Glennโs Success in Career
During the 1930s and 1940s, his songs blew off the chart. Some of the hits were, โMoonlight Serenadeโ, โIn the Moodโ, and โChattanooga Choo Chooโ. These songs were so famous all around the world, they were played in halls all around. In 1937, Miller formed his first-ever orchestra. That was when he started to blow off the charts. His song was a mixture of all jazz, swing, and pop music. It was the peak of the swing era.
Later, Millerโs music appeared in several Hollywood movies, in โSun Valley Serenadeโ and โOrchestra Wivesโ. He even came up with his own radio show called โThe Chesterfield Moonlight Serenadeโ. This show was broadcast on CBS from 1939 to 1942.
2.1 Glenn Miller and His Army Air Forces Band
In 1942, Glenn Miller formed an โArmy Air Force Bandโ, which only performed at military bases, hospitals, etc. in the United States and overseas as well. Their performances were really popular among the United states army air force and its troops. They helped boost the morale of the troops during a war. Since they have sung songs on patriotism and military-based songs.
Hits like โMoonlight Serenadeโ, โIn the Moodโ, โChattanooga Choo Chooโ, and โAmerican Patrolโ were performed by the band itself.
Initially, the big band was formed as a dance band but it proceeded to jazz, pop, and swing music. This band consisted of about 50 musicians, including some famous ones like Bobby Hackett, Ray McKinley, and Mel Powell. As for Miller, he served as the music director and conductor of the big band and was responsible for arranging the music.
The band had toured all over the world through Europe, North Africa, etc.
In 1944, Glen and his band decided to settle in France for supporting the allied expeditionary force on the continent. They started playing for both American troops and French troops, performing at various places in France, even Paris.
2.2 Millerโs Attempts to Join the Armed Forces
Around 1942, during World War II, Miller made attempts to join the armed forces of America. He was ready to give up his income as a band leader to fight for the country.
He was later assigned to an Army Specialist corps, which included organizing musical entertainment for the troops.
First, Glenn Miller tried to join the Navy but unfortunately, they rejected him. It was because the Navy was dealing with draft dodgers in change for reproach concerning celebrity commissions. Although there was no part of Miller in that scandal, they just decided to prevent letting Millerโs application from work.
From a young age, Glenn Miller had Myopia and due to poor visibility, he had to wear corrective glasses to see things clearly. As a result, he had a lot of trouble working in an Army Specialist Corps, because of his bad eyesight. But he managed to achieve his dream of a musician anyways.
3. The Unexplained Disappearance of Glenn Miller
For performing for the allied forces, Miller was supposed to go to Paris, France on the 13th of December. But due to bad weather conditions, the flight was canceled. The next day, the 14th of December, the flight was canceled due to the same reason. This made Miller irritated and furious.
It was later found by history detectives that, on the night of 14th December, Miller had got a call. It was from his air force band manager, Don Haynes. Over the phone, he told Miller that Lieutenant Colonel Baessell was heading to France that day and they had offered Miller a ride for the next day, the 15th of December.
The next day, the weather being chilly, they all arrived at the Twinwood. It was so cold that Haynes checked the temperature and it was 34 degrees Fahrenheit. Hearing this, Miller was concerned about flying in this disastrous weather.
But he got on the Norseman anyways.
3.1 His Last Whereabouts
Finally, on the 15th of December, Glenn Miller was flying to Paris, France from the United Kingdom to perform for the allied troops posted there for World War II. It was supposed to be a Christmas performance. For the past few weeks, he was in the UK, performing for the American and British troops.
He was said to have boarded UC-64A Norseman as a passenger, in Bedfordshire, England. The aircraft was specially requested by Millerโs team. The plane was controlled by flight officer John Morgan and Lieutenant Colonel, Norman Baessell, along with Sergeant John P. Stubbs.
Around 1:55 p.m., millerโs plane took off from Twinwood Farm. After going over the English Channel, Millerโs plane was never seen again.
Maybe the plane crashed and reached the bottom of the English channel. Hence, Glenn Miller disappeared.
3.2 The Aftermath of the Disappearance
For the performance in Paris, Miller had decided on a 6-week concert for the allied troops. Miller was supposed to meet the orchestra for their rehearsal on the 18th of December. Although Miller was not present there, they didnโt think for it to be suspicious because it was not that rare for people to miss rehearsals during the war.
It had been a total of 9 days, after which they realized that Miller was missing and Glenn Miller was announced to be officially missing. It was announced that Major Alton Glenn Miller, the director of the US Air Force band, is missing on a flight from England to Paris. Millerโs plane had mysteriously disappeared over the English channel. Both Glenn Miller and the crew had vanished, including flight officer John Morgan and Lieutenant Colonel Norman Baessell.
4. Theories about the Disappearance of Glenn Miller
How did this iconic figure of musical history vanish? and how is this mysterious disappearance still unsolved?
There have been several conspiracy theories throughout the years.
4.1 Bad Weather Conditions?
The first-ever theory to come up was bad weather conditions. Since it was reported before that Millerโs flight was postponed due to weather conditions, it might have been possible that, on the 15th of December, while passing the English Channel, the weather got bad and before they could come up with a solution, the weather had already effected the plane.
It was also reported that, due to bad weather conditions, John Morgan insisted on canceling the flight. But Norman Baessell ordered him to take the flight, or else Miller would not reach Paris on the scheduled time.
Upon seeing the weather conditions, Miller was concerned. It was noted that Miller did not like flying and after hearing about the weather, he was looking for parachutes. In response to that, Norman had replied โWhatโs the matter, Miller? do you want to live forever?โ.
Apparently, Morgan was not qualified enough to use plane instruments alone while flying. This possibly ended up causing a problem. When the weather got bad, maybe Morgan couldnโt control the plane and hence, it was because of the mechanical failure, causing the plane crash.
Although this theory was not verified, this theory seemed like the most possible reason as to why and how Glenn Miller and his plane vanished to.
4.2 Did Miller Even Board the Plane?
There was another theory that, maybe Glenn Miller never boarded the plane to Paris.
Many had believed the fact that Glenn Miller had stayed back in England and never actually got on that plane to Paris. Instead, he stayed back and was carrying missions in secret. And the act of Glenn Millerโs disappearance was only staged to cover up his activities and military documents.
While the others believe that maybe Miller had decided to leave the band and army to start a new life, with a new identity.
Once again, there arenโt any solid shreds of evidence to prove this theory is true. But many think it is true because Glenn Millerโs body was never found.
Another reason was, during World War II, Josephine Baker, a famous entertainer, took part in sending secret codes to the resistance fighters. She used her music sheets as a way of communicating to deliver those codes. These codes were only identified by those who knew the system. This was discovered much later and she was honored for her bravery.
So this also stood as a lead, maybe Miller was a spy?
Another version of this theory was, Miller never boarded the plane but was sent to a secret mission, where he was killed by Gen. Dwight D โIkeโ Eisenhower, who sent him on that mission. And the main purpose of that mission was to arrange for a give-in from Nazi Germany.
4.3 Maybe Miller Already Reached Paris?
This theory stated that Glenn Miller had already reached Paris unknowingly. He might have survived the plane crash and reached his destination. And there, Miller died from a heart attack. It was said that Miller had lived there with an anonymous identity so that people wonโt identify him.
There have also been theories about Glenn Miller dying in a brothel in Paris or after reaching Paris, they had covertly returned Miller to the United States but this remained confidential.
Although, the detectives and experts did not believe in this theory as much. This is because there were no solid pieces of evidence regarding this theory and surviving that weather condition would be unbelievable.
4.4 The Friendly Fire Theory
The history detectives ran a special investigation on this case.
Over the years, this friendly fire theory was the most accepted. The British Government had done its own investigation into Glenn Millerโs disappearance. They had suspected that their friendly fire had killed one of the greatest morale boosters, Glenn Miller.
Detectives had managed to reach out to Millerโs nephew, John. He was really young when his uncle, Glenn Miller disappeared. He said, on the 15th of December, there was a knock on the door. John was ordered not to open the door at any cost. But he did it, he opened the door. โHereโs his line of brass buttons disappearing over a khaki cliffโ He said.
Millerโs death was hard on his family. Especially his college sweetheart and wife, Helen Burger.
After notifying Helen, Millerโs wife, she wrote to the US Air Force for several years for more details about her husband. She had heard rumors that Glenn had been held captive in the war camp but the military officials had notified millerโs wife that he just never reached his destination and had been, therefore, presumed dead.
Millerโs nephew, John, had stated that his father looked for more evidence for Millerโs disappearance. His father did not want to accept the fact that Miller had disappeared.
Apparently, Johnโs father believed that Miller had cancer because he noticed how his tailor-made clothes were loose on him. He realized Miller lost a lot of weight and thought of this as a sign of illness caused by all the smoking.
It was also noted that Johnโs father even went to the Veterans Hospital to observe the body that was found. Even though it wasnโt verified it was his body, Johnโs father accepted now that Miller had died.
5. More about the Friendly Fire Theory
In the mid-1980s, a Former Royal Army Navigator, Fred Shaw claimed that he had seen Glenn Miller die. He had seen, while the British Lancaster was dropping its bombs in the English Channel, one of them had hit a C64 Norseman, the kind where Miller was flying in.
A British investigator and researcher, Roy Nesbit, had run an investigation into this case. Roy Nesbit was only 18 years old when the war broke out. He was a Former Royal Air Force navigator. Roy said, after 40 years of that incident, the British Ministry of Defense was alerted that the RAF might have accidentally killed Miller.
Eventually, they received a report from South Africa that, British Lancaster was returning from an aborted mission that day. And they had seen a C64 Norse dive into the water around the South Jettison area.
Shaw reported that a Lancaster was sent to bomb the German city. But due to the frigid weather, they had aborted the raid mid-flight. Now, they had to get rid of the bombs they carried with them and therefore, they started dropping them in the English channel.
The bombs were giant, designed in a way to blow up the German city. The next moment, he saw an aircraft and right then, the bomb aimer told him โThereโs a kite down thereโ. Shaw saw the small high-winged monoplane and immediately recognized it as the Noorduyn Norseman. The explosion from one of the bombs had caused the plane to crash into the South Jettison.
According to Royโs calculations, it was only a matter of a few minutes before Glenn Millerโs plane was damaged from the explosion of the bomb. Another solid lead was, Millerโs plane was the only Norseman used during the incident.
Although, this theory wasnโt fully verified. This was because they had found a spotterโs log that stated that Miller had taken a different route. This route would make this theory impossible. The spotterโs log was noted down in a journal by Richard Averton. He was working in the military base and was an avid plane spotter.
