Icy Tales in a conversation with Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwaj about how after being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, he decided to help others in similar situations.ย He is looking forward to his future endeavors and witnessing what life unfurls for him. in terms of his health and profession.
Q) Can you share a little about your condition? Does Muscular Dystrophy interfere with who you are as a person and in the pursuit of your goals and dreams?
Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwajย โ Muscular dystrophy is a rare condition where the human does not produce a particular amino acid, causing loss of muscle mass. It is a progressive condition. I was diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, which affects the shoulders and pelvic girdle.
Usually, patients with this condition are severely affected, but thanks to the number of therapies and treatments I have gone through since childhood, my health is in a better place. Muscular dystrophy causes frequent falls, respiratory ailments like dyspnea, and others. Currently, my condition is in a mild to moderate state. I am taking care of my health via diet and exercise for the past 15โ20 years.
Initially, when my parents learned about my condition, they started working on educating themselves about it. My father is a government servant in railways, and my mother is an assistant professor at one of the universities in Prayagraj. She has a Ph.D. in education for the specially abled. Though they were scared, initially, they prepared themselves to help me face this disease.
Q)What or who has been your driving force? Something that has kept you going and helped you achieve this feat of becoming a doctor?
Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwajย โย My parents, brother, and sister has always supported me. There was an incident that made my brother upset and he told me that I was trying to do things using the resources that I didnโt have instead of doing things with the resources I already had.
There was a time when my brother and sister was sitting and discussing career and other things, and this was a time when I had to visit the hospital frequently. But I was doubting my ability to do things and wondering if in the end will I be able to complete what I have started. It is then that my brother told me to focus on things I can do, things I am good at. He made me understand that if I have physical limitations then I should use my mental abilities.
ย
My sister always explained to me that whatever I do, I should always know that my family will be always there for me, and that stuck with me then I thought that I will use my mind and intelligence instead of my body.
There are also some friends like me, who support me, my family always has had my back. When a doctor advised my parents not to invest in me and told them โhe would never be able to do things independentlyโ. That offended my mother, she could not understand how could a doctor say that and they chose not to listen to him. This is how my passion ended up becoming my profession.
Q) What made you choose Homeopathy?
Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwajย โ From the beginning, my mother was sure about not treating me using severe options like surgeries and biopsies. My parents did a lot of research about homeopathy and found a brilliant doctor who was very good at what he did.
When my mother told him about my condition he did not ask her any further questions and just asked her to directly bring me to him. We visited him, and he diagnosed me and recommended a few medicines. Back then, my condition was severe I used to fall frequently and could not get up by myself. After I started taking the recommended medicines for about six years, I could visibly see myself recovering.
There is a test for muscular dystrophy, it is called CPK (Creatine phosphokinaseย ) test, it needs to be within the 5-500 range or less than 500, mine was at 28000. After the medicines, the level decreased. My health got better because of the medicines and therapies. This was when I questioned myself if homeopathy could improve my health to such an extent, why shouldnโt I become a homeopath? so I did. Currently, I am treating two muscular dystrophies and 2-3 rheumatoid arthritis Patients. This is why I chose homeopathy.
Q) What is something you would like to tell people who are biased against Homeopathy?
Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwajย โ I want to start off by expressing that I am not against any methods of treatment. But those interested in homeopathy and those who chose taking homeopathy do so because it works for them. There are two faces to every situation. In medicine too, there are two sides there is good and bad.
Those who are biased against homeopathy, probably are because they havenโt seen the results or the essence of homeopathy. There are so many doctors who are treating 2nd stages or 3rd stage cancer with homeopathy. I cannot tell people to change their opinion but I do believe that they havenโt seen the results therefore they are biased against it.
Q) Apart from your career, what do you enjoy doing the most? What are your passions and hobbies?
Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwajย โ I have to paint, and I have to draw when I am free or stressed. I take my pen or pencil and start drawing anything from memory or the things that are in front of me. Art is my hobby.
Q) What advice would you like to give to those who are currently going through the same physical, emotional or mental turmoil that you went through in the pursuit of your happiness and goals?
Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwajย โ I Always tell my patients or the parents of my patients what I learned from my parents, I tell them not to give up. God has created you in such a way that he might have taken something from you, but heโll always enrich you with something else. Nothing can stop you.
Q) What is your superpower? What do you think is a quality of yours that you are proud of? Something that makes you glad that you are you?
Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwaj โ I am passionate about things. If I want something, then I have to pursue it. I believe in astrology and my horoscope tells me that I am an inborn performer. I believe I can do things that are within and beyond my capacity.
ย
I do have physical limitations but I have a keen sense of what is right and wrong. I believe I am very perceptive of people as well, I can tell what someone is thinking without them noticing. Also, I should add that I am very talkative and love to be in a conversation, any conversation. I am usually satisfied with small things. When upset if someone presents me with even a tiny pebble with my name on it, I will be satisfied. Thatโs who I am.
Q) If you could go back in time and talk to your past self. How many years old you would you talk to and what would you say to them?
Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwajโ This question puts me in a thinking mode. When I was around 12 or 13 years, I was in a very negative state of mind. I was angry with everything and everybody. I would often get angry with my situation and wonder why I could not do things others could. I was even angry with my parents thinking they were not supporting me. Everyone except me seemed to be doing things well on their own, doing well with their physical body and appearance.
I would go back to that time and tell that kid โyou donโt have to be who you are right now, this situation will go right and you just have to trust your time and situation. Donโt focus on the future, focus on what you have now, you will realize that in the future when you get things when you get to do your post-graduation and treat your patients, the satisfied answers they give, the praise you will receive for your talents, for who you are and what you have achieved would be Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwaj.โ
I will that kid to trust the present time, that if you canโt do stuff now, you can do it in the future. Donโt stress yourself, donโt misbehave, and donโt waste your time searching for things you donโt have, God has taken something but he will give you something else, just focus on your present self.
ย
In a situation that most consider dark and low, this bright and inspirational person decided to be the light for others. Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwaj is a hardworking, passionate doctor who loves his profession and continues to move ahead each day and not let anything stop him.
