History of The Butchart Gardens (National historic site)
Everything began with love! Jennie Butchart tried to recreate an ancient beauty from her husband’s mining-out industrial mining operation.
The Butcharts called this property their home, moved here in 1904, and named it Benvenuta – the Italian word for welcoming in 1908. Seeing that the cement plants were destroying limestone buried on the land, Jennie thought about constructing an enclave of gardens.
From 1812 until 1921, she carefully designed the structure that required horses to transport soil on farms in the vicinity. Then she designed her masterpiece: The Sunken Gardens. It is a jewel in The Butchart Gardens.
