You may ask what the difference between the Marvel universe and the Marvel cinematic universe is. Let me take you down the lane of this vast sci-fi, fantasy universe of the Marvel universe.
Marvel Universe
The idea of creating this universe was initiated by a few iconic American comic book writers/editors- Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, and Carl Burgos, who came together to create the world of Superheroes. First through comic books which later became the powerful fantasy characters that we today witness on the big screen.
Martin Goodman made the company Marvel Comics under Timely publications in 1939. The first comic book to be officially published under the Timely publications was the Human Torch.
This character made its first appearance according to the comic books in Namor the Sub-Mariner. This comic book proved to be a hit.
The writers decided to introduce another powerful character that symbolizes patriotism following the success. This idea gave birth to one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel universe- Captain America by the writer/ artist Joe Simon, collaborating with Jack Kirby – Comic book artist. This powerful character was first featured in the series of comic books in Captain America Comics #1.
Thus began the massive production of the Marvel comics. In the 1960s, Stan Lee made a new revolution changing the perception towards superheroes to the audience.
Now, the comics were targeted more towards the older audience highlighting the adult issues. The older audience appreciated the modern comics of marvel characters as well.
The first superhero team to be formed in this fantasy was the Fantastic Four. This showed a wider spectrum of all the characters in the Fantastic Four reaching the adult audience personally.
The following book was The Amazing Spiderman series, which gained huge popularity because of its story portrayal of a teenager- Peter Parker, who faced problems similar to what most teenagers face and lacked confidence. This reached the audience personally and could identify that such issues could happen to anyone.
What makes Marvel unique is that they also depict a strong background story of all the superheroes that led them to become brave superheroes.
This helps the audience to understand these characters better and get a closer look at their lives that inspired them to be a superhero.
This was quite different from the traditional portrayal of characters in other comic books.
They highlighted the importance of showing the characters naturally, both superheroes and anti-heroes. Many powerful characters have been seen in their most vulnerable form, turning into a superhuman.
Example like- Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, Black Panther, Jessica Jones.,Daredevil, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, and many more. Even these characters were strongly depicted in the developing era of the Marvel comics, gaining a big title in the comic world.
Marvel made its identity in the superhero comics gradually over the years and started expanding its line of comics by introducing more new marvel characters. They even surpassed its major competitor, D.C. comics.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Marvel Entertainment Group was sold to Toy Biz in 1997, forming a new company- Marvel Enterprise. Under this enterprise, the new comics were published, and many characters were introduced to reach an audience of the new generation. Characters like X men, Spiderman, and Blade were introduced in a comics series.
Later, a few of these characters under the company’s property were adopted in films, bringing them to the big screen in the early 2000s. This brought a new revolution to the Marvel entertainment group.
In 2009 August, Walt Disney acquired Marvel Comics, and the books were released in graphic novels.
This revolutionized Marvel comics, and bigger characters were coming to people’s attention. The Marvel Cinematic universe was thus formed (MCU).
This franchise produces films based on the Marvel comics. The first film under this franchise was- Iron Man (2008), which proved to be a hit in cinemas, as it gave a new genre of films depicting the stories of superheroes.
MCU releases not only movies but also various TV shows. The adaptations of these superheroes in films and tv series gradually gained huge popularity, and the rest is history.
