In her conversation with Icy Tales, she spoke about her journey to becoming a health coach, her opinion on weight loss along with busting some myths about nutrition.
Q) When did you decide that you want to be a nutritionist and a health coach?
Neha Goyal โ I completed my MBA in 2010ย and after that, I was looking for something that I can work on. Later on, while working only I realized that Iย had an interest in nutrition but I never thought to consider it as a profession later in my life.
After I got married and got kids, I struggled with weight loss because I didnโt have the knowledge that told me the right way to lose weight. When you donโt have any professional advice, you donโt know how to go about it because you wouldnโt know which is healthy and which is unhealthy.
Then when I looked for professional advice, I found out that many of the nutritionists, especially in India focus only on weight loss. They donโt think about how your inner health is or if you are facing any issues related to your hormones of monthly period cycles. They just want us to lose weight and I did not want to compromise my hormones for weight loss.
After this, I started reading more on this and one fine day, I thought that let me take it professionally. All that I read helped me change myself for the better so I wanted to take it to another level. So I did a professional degree and I am still learning more things in detail. But yes, now Iโm helping many people to get better at life.
Q) Tell us something about your venture, โNourish, and Glowโ
Neha Goyal โ ย I worked on the name because I want to nourish people from the inside. Itโs not like, theyโre here just to lose weight; I want to work with you to strengthen your Inner Health, balance your hormones, and solve your problems.
If you have any period problems or migraines, I can help you with that as well. Only when your inner health is sorted, you will glow from the outside. So the name is focused on that: Nourish and Glow.
Q) How do you think the current Lifestyle Changes have influenced health and well-being in people?
Neha Goyal โ I think the major problem these days is that our lifestyle is becoming very sedentary. We all have jobs and even if we are in business, we are sitting for long hours and the physical activity levels are going down. As Indians, we are social beings and food is our love language. If we are in a meeting with friends or family, we love to eat, right?
As we are sitting most of the time, we are not exercising and eventually gaining weight. Like, if we see the overall world obesity level, India is topping the charts. We need to work on that and ensure that we eat healthy meals. Homemade meals are the best, undoubtedly.
Q) Nowadays in the name of weight loss, many people are choosing the wrong ways to lose weight. Being an expert in this field, tell us some healthy weight loss tips.
Neha Goyal โ We need to focus on homemade meals primarily. Many people think itโs homemade it would be boring but the reality is we can make anything at home in a healthy way; so you need to focus on that. If you open Instagram, there are many things like eating berries, avocados, smoothies, and all other things that are not found easily in India and they are not affordable as well.ย But there are many things apart from these that will help us lose weight.
Other than this, exercise is very important, especially if we talk about womenโs health later on. When women go through or are close to menopause, they start losing their bone density. So, if we donโt exercise, we are prone to more injuries and the risks of fractures. If we look at our mothers, many of them had hip fractures or leg fractures owing to low bone density. So workouts are very important, especially for women.
Q) What is something that you admire about your profession?
Neha Goyal โ I feel very grateful when my clients message me that their health is improving and how it has eventually improved their self-confidence. Sometimes I have tears in my eyes because a small change is giving my clients, a huge difference in their life.
Sometimes, when I wake up in the morning and read positive messages, it just makes my day. When you are in the health industry, even a small change brings so much happiness. The boost in self-confidence that I see is a whole new feeling and that happiness has no bounds.
Q) What myths about nutrition would you like to bust?
Neha Goyal โ If you see my Instagram handle, I have a series on Myths Busted and Iโm still doing it. Some people think that if they have to go to a party at night, not eating throughout the day would save them calories. But the reality is that when you are not eating the whole day and go to a party and relish, you would end up over-eating. If your limit is 1800 calories, you might end up eating 2500 calories because you have been starving all day.
In the name of diet food, there are so many products in the market but the truth is that such food is really high in calories so people should avoid them. You can either make them at home or just avoid eating them.
Meal Replacers are very common now but nutritionally, they donโt have all the things which the basic food can provide you. They increase your glucose levels rapidly which is bad for health. So we should definitely avoid such replacements and have our regular home-cooked foods.
Neha Goyal believes that health and wellness should not be compromised and should be given top priority in everyoneโs lives. She aims to help as many people as she can to help them choose the right ways of getting fit and healthy.
