Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu, a native of Chandigarh, is the talk of the town after winning the Miss Universe crown after an incredible 21 years! 13. Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu’s Early Life and Education
Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu was born to Pritampal Singh Sandhu and Rabinder Kaur Sandhu in the Punjabi village of Kohali in the Gurdaspur district. Her mother is a gynaecologist, while her father is a realtor. She has one sibling as well. Jat Sikhs make up Sandhu’s family.
In 2006, the family relocated to England. Two years later, they returned to India and lived in Chandigarh, where Sandhu was raised. She went to Chandigarh’s Post Graduate Government College for Girls and Shivalik Public School, respectively. Sandhu was earning a master’s in public administration before winning Miss Universe. Kaur Sandhu is a native speaker of Punjabi and is also proficient in Hindi and English.
14. Pageantry
Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu started competing in pageants as a teenager, taking home victories including Miss Chandigarh 2017 and Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018. Although Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu first kept her participation in her first pageant from her father and only told him about it after she won, he was understanding of her decision to pursue pageantry.
After winning the 2019 Femina Miss India Punjab title, Sandhu competed in Femina Miss India. She eventually reached the top 12 and was named Miss World.
15. Miss Diva 2021
On August 16, 2021, Sandhu was chosen as one of the Top 50 semifinalists for Miss Diva 2021. She would be among the Top 20 competitors in the televised Miss Diva competition, it was revealed later on August 23. In the preliminary competition on September 22, Sandhu won the Miss Beautiful Skin award and went on to win the Miss Beach Body, Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Photogenic, and Miss Talented titles.
One of the top 10 semifinalists in the Miss Diva 2021 competition, Sandhu, spoke during the opening statement round:
“From a woman who once doubted her own existence to a woman who hopes to motivate young people. I am proud to stand before the universe today as a strong, lively, and caring lady ready to live a life of significance and leave a lasting legacy.”
She was selected to move on to the next round of the competition. The top 5 participants were each given a different topic to speak on during the final question and answer round, which they themselves chose through the draw. In response to Sandhu’s choice of “Global Warming and Climate Change,” she said:
“Because your life will one day pass before your eyes, be sure it is worthwhile living. The environment is deteriorating and the temperature is changing, yet this is not the life you want to observe. It is a catastrophe for the environment brought on by people. We still have time, in my opinion, to change our careless behaviour. Our shared home, Earth, can be transformed by the modest deeds we all do when multiplied by billions. Start turning off those extra lights now, starting tonight. I’m grateful.”
Adeline Castelino, who had previously held the title, announced Sandhu as the winner after the competition. She had the immense privilege of presenting India at the 70th Miss universe.
16. Miss Universe 2021
On December 13, 2021, in Eilat, Israel, Sandhu defeated 80 other contenders to become Miss Universe 2021. After Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta in 1994 and 2000, she represented India and became the third Indian winner. The announcement was made by the current Miss Universe, Andrea Meza, and Sandhu was crowned Miss Universe 2021 by the host, Steve Harvey.
Sandhu has visited Israel, several American cities, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Africa, and her own India while serving as Miss Universe.
