There is nothing like settling in with popcorn, coke, and a romantic movie on a weekend night. Romantic movies are a pack of every human emotion- you will laugh, cry, and feel warm, mushy, and relaxed.
It doesnโt matter how many times we watch the classic scene where the hero runs across the airport to the heroine, and confesses his love to her.
They kiss and decide to be with each other spend the rest of their lives together, we canโt get enough because romantic movies are about love and hope, the two most beautiful themes in the world.
And sometimes, when we feel alone, upset, and like giving up, an excellent romantic comedy can lift our spirits and give us butterflies in our stomachs. And at other times, they are can just be entertaining.
Here are 10 must watch Hollywood romantic movies that you do not want to miss out on:
1. Notting Hill (1999)
Hugh Grant is ideally suited for any romantic movie. He is awkward, goofy, nervous, basically everything a real person is when they are in love.
Grant gives his character a charm that I like to believe is his and not the characterโs, and thus produces a blend of a man that no woman canโt fall in love with.
He is the most lovable hero, and is responsible for many must-watch Hollywood romantic movies. And then, to make things better, Julia Roberts stars alongside him, a talented beauty that can pull off any character well.
Will, the owner of a small bookstore in Notting Hill, and famous Hollywood actress Anna meet by a chance encounter (a hand dealt by fate).
Anna, disenchanted by her public and glamorous life, is attracted to Will because he is modest and straightforward. They form an unlikely couple, given that they are opposites, yet, like every beautiful romance, find themselves drawn to each other.
Will, after getting heartbroken, tries to move on, but his heart has settled for Anna. By the end, you will be rooting for this unlikely duo to realize that they belong to each other.
This movie is a wholesome ride, and the chemistry between the two stars only makes it better. You will find yourself giddy in the stomach, thinking about that time when โyou were just a young girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to love you.โ
2. 500 Days of Summer (2009)
The narrator, right, in the beginning, clears that this movie is not a love story. And I agree, it is not, which makes it all the more realistic. In real life, romance doesnโt play out perfectly.
More often than not, people and their differences donโt allow them to be together, and they get their hearts broken. 500 Days Of Summer is the kind of those must watch Hollywood romantic movies, which reminds you that relationships are messy.
People fall out of love as easily as they fall in. And sometimes, youโre happier apart than you are together.
Joseph Gordan Levitt and Zoey Deschanel collaborate to create this timeless cult classic, in the characters of Tom and Summer.
It is quite literally Tomโs experience of spending 500 days with Summer. The movie has a โnon-linear narrative,โ meaning it moves back and forth between timelines. It explores all the stages of falling in love, from the initial butterflies to the depression.
When you watch it, you realize that you have been both Tom and Summer in your life, and for the first time, you get to see how it feels to be on the other side. You will learn that not everyone you meet or love will stay forever; thatโs life.
Donโt miss out on โHeroโ by Regina Spektor, a beautiful song accompanied by a heart-breaking montage.
3. Before Sunrise (1995)
A beautiful romance brews between an American man and a French woman, but they only have one day they can spend together.
Classic, right? Before Sunrise is not one of your typical must watch Hollywood romantic movies. It keeps you on the edge because the characters have a deadline. But that doesnโt keep them from getting close.
They walk on the streets of Vienna, giving you a rather personal tour of the city.
Jesse and Celine find each other on a train, and as an impromptu decision, decide to spend a day together before both leave the city and never meet each other again.
They walk all day, talking about anything and everything before the romantic tension between them makes them kiss and realize that leaving wouldnโt be as easy as they thought it would.
Their talks will remind you of those endless strolls and sleepless nights you had with someone, where the conversation just flowed, and it seemed like there were countless things to talk about.
And sometimes thatโs what romance is, not flowers, dates and big gestures, just a conversation.
4. Maybe (2008)
One of the cutest must watch Hollywood romantic movies, Definitely, Maybe has a star cast comprising of Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz, and Abigail Breslin.
It plays out in flashback when Maya becomes curious about how her parents met and asked Will, her father. Will goes back in time as he tells her the story of three women he fell in love with in the past, changing the names, so that Maya can guess who her mother is. But to their surprise, Maya ends up reuniting Will with the woman he truly loves.
This movie isnโt your typical romance story, because it begins in the wake of a divorce. Will is all the proof we need to understand that love usually makes an unexpected entry, and if you donโt recognize it fast enough, you might end up regretting it your whole life.
10-year-old curious Maya is witty and smart, sometimes more so than Will, making this father-daughter bond one of the highlights. The name of the movie pretty much sums up its essence- love is complicated but ultimately worthwhile.
5. Made of Honor (2008)
Tom and Hannah are best friends, who are aloof to their feelings for each other until Hannah gets engaged to a Scottish young man, and now Tom must attend the wedding as her maid of honor.
Tom does everything to tell her that he is in love with her, and eventually, his grand gesture makes them realize they are meant for each other.
Made of Honor is a sappy love story with bits of humor and satire. Patrick Dempsey is the player turned loverboy, while Michelle Monaghan is the witty character who realizes her true love a bit too late.
The movie may be predictable, but that doesnโt stop it from being entertainingly romantic. It is also a reminder that love doesnโt have to be a destroyer of friendship.
The second half of the movie takes you to Scotland, a dream location for a wedding. There are beautiful shots of the scenery and the castles, which are a delight to watch.
Tom is pushed into performing some Scottish traditions, where he makes a fool of himself, making the scene comical and Tom even more likable.
If you want to watch a romance movie that is easy, fresh, and which makes you cry in a good way, make sure you watch Made of Honor!
6. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
10 Things I Hate About You is special for all the right reasons- a feminist lead, the most iconic cast, high school kids who LOOK like it, and the beginning of love between two opposites.
Starring the late Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordan-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik, this movie is based on high-school kids and the brewing of two love stories. Bianca is the schoolโs queen bee who keeps getting asked out by boys.
Her sister, Kat, is a no-nonsense badass who is anti-social and unapologetic. When Bianca wants to go to the school prom, her dad imposes a condition- Bianca can go only if Kat goes.
And so Joey, a popular guy who wants to take Bianca out, hires Patrick to win Kat over and take her to the prom. Patrick, who was in it just for the money, soon falls for Kat, thus beginning the most iconic romance of all time.
Katโs character was ahead of her time. She is intelligent, witty, woke, and completely done with the patriarchy. Patrick finds his way into her heart but ends up hurting both of them.
Patrick and Kat appear to be stone-cold and stuck-up, but as the movie plays out, they are revealed to be two very interesting people with good hearts, who have fun and make each other happy, making them the perfect couple.
You may relate to Kat, who is misunderstood simply because she is a smart young woman who speaks up for herself, or to Bianca, who is misunderstood as dumb, but she is more than just her looks.
This movie is included in must watch Hollywood romantic movies because it reminds us of the purest form of romance- high school love. Itโs full of laughs, misunderstandings, a bit of drama, confusion, big romantic gestures, a brilliant punch thrown by Bianca, badass women and charming men, the perfect recipe for any romance.
7. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Sleepless In Seattle tars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, Sleepless In Seattle is less about chemistry and more about chance. If youโve seen enough romantic movies, you know that when fate wants two people to meet, nothing can come in the way.
In this case, fateโs work is done by eight-year-old Jonah, who is adamant about finding his father, Sam, a woman after his mother passes away to cancer.
He makes Sam talk on the air, on a radio show, about his wife and their story. Miles away, Annie hears the story and writes a letter to Sam, asking him to meet her at the top of the Empire State Building.
Jonah opens it to find more information and secretly arranges a meeting between the two without his dad knowing.
What follows is a lot of frustrating missed encounters and misunderstandings until you start to pray that these two finally meet.
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have undeniable great chemistry, which comes out beautifully on the screen. Sleepless in Seattle is unique because the hero and heroine donโt properly meet until the very end, keeping you right on edge. This is one of my favorites that must watch Hollywood romantic movies, aside from being a cult-classic.
8. The Holiday (2006)
Another multi-starrer with Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Jack Black, The Holiday is among must watch Hollywood romantic movies for the holiday season.
Iris and Amanda are two women who have troubles in their relationships and want a break from their lives. They agree to swap houses, with both having to adapt to a different lifestyle than they are used to. They meet new people and finally receive the love they deserve.
The Holiday is different because it is less about clichรฉs and more about the reality of how romance builds. You may not find extravagant gestures of love, but you will find four sincere people navigating their way through life and romance.
The Holiday is one of the must watch Hollywood romantic movies that teaches you to never settle for love. The love you deserve will come along your way; you just need to wait. And I think we all need such little reminders once in a while.
9. Serendipity (2001)
Serendipity will make you want to go to New York specifically to fall in love. Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack come together to create one of the most underrated must watch Hollywood romantic movies. If you believe in the power and magic of destiny, definitely watch this movie.
Johnathan and Sara have a few chance encounters in New York and hit it off. But right before Sara can give her number to Johnathan, the piece of paper flies away.
Sara takes it as a negative sign by the universe and suggests that they let destiny decide if they should meet up again. Years later, they are both about to get married but still canโt forget about each other, so they begin on a journey to find their true love.
Serendipity is one of the most enchanting must watch Hollywood romantic movies of all time. New York looks dreamy in it. After watching it, having a nice romantic dinner with someone in Serendipity III (a restaurant in New York) is on my bucket list!
10. Midnight in Paris (2011)
Midnight in Paris is a piece of art, created by Woody Allen. Not only does it show Paris in its prime today with scenic views and beautiful architecture, but it also recreates Paris and its beauty in the 1920s, making you wish you were in Gilโs place. If you werenโt in love with Paris before, you surely would be after watching this movie.
Gil Pender is a screenwriter working in Hollywood. He is engaged to the woman of his dreams, Inez.
On their vacation in Paris, Gil seems obsessed with figures of the past, much to Inezโs dismay. One night, when he is walking on the street, he sees an old-fashioned vehicle pull up. Upon entering it, he finds himself in front of Ernest Hemingway in the flesh.
They head to a party, where Gil meets people he has only read about- Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and Cole Porter.
The night takes him to an apartment where he meets Pablo Picassoโs lover Adriana, a young French girl. Gil keeps going back and forth between the present and past and falls in love with Adriana.
Midnight in Paris is the most beautiful way a romance story can be narrated. We all have a little bit of Gil in our hearts, and weโre always searching for our Adriana.
You can watch these must-watch Hollywood romantic movies with someone you love for an even more enriching romantic experience.
However, many of them are also romantic comedies, so you will find them entertaining regardless! They will evoke the hidden romantic in you and remind you of what real love looks like.
